How to remove an old tile counterop with chicken wire, concrete. This job was a mess but with the right tool, the right people, it's a pretty quick job! I recommend renting a hammerdrill (home depot or lowe's) to get this job done. Quick tip: rent equipment in the evening (less than 4 hours prior to close) and you don't have to return it until 9 am the next morning (4 hour rental)

Thank you this was immensely helpful. I went and bought myself a rotary hammer drill and chisel bit, and my countertop came apart exactly like yours did, right down to the chicken wire/concrete slab, which peeled right off.

I'm considering demoing a bathroom tile countertop to replace with marble. Have not decided yet but your video really helped understand the task. Just like you I want to preserve the 1/2" plywood beneath. Your video gives me confidence that it can be done.

You know, if you just take off the v cap so you can get a pry bar under the plywood, it will all come out as one piece. It’s a lot cleaner and it is way less work.

Great Video - I'd love to see what it looked like with the quartz installed after. I'm curious as to why you left the plywood underlay and how that worked with the quartz. Did your quartz have a hanging edge profile?

Actually worked perfect. Guys laid quartz right over old plywood. Had 2” lip overhang.

Great video to show me what I'm in for. Our kitchen is a bit smaller, but we do have windows I'm thinking of covering with plywood during the tile removal. In a couple spots near our sink and stove, the grout cracked, which allowed small amounts of water to seep in over almost 4 decades. The plywood underneath those spots has swollen, and pushed the tiles upward slightly. This has caused the cracks and subsequent seepage to increase, exacerbating the swelling and unevenness of the plywood surface. Would replacing the plywood be the best bet at this point?

Replace plywood. Doesn't need to be from and 8'x4' sheet. You could get one large enough be able to secure it to cabinet. Good luck with the project. It's messy but worth your time if you are "working" from home!

I am in the middle of this with mud set and screen and large tiles set on MDF. I have a lot of years experience at other projects, big hammers, and bars, and I was getting nowhere. you have to get under the mud, and get to the nails and remove them. HD wanted $700 to do mine. I am off to HD for a hammer drill, either that or I will be here FOR DAYS. I have other uses for the hammer drill, so just a way to get another tool, as if I need one, which I guess I do.Cheers

I love justifying my HD purchases by "saving" money buying equipment that ends up still being cheaper than quote. Funny how prices are so different. $850 quote from HD for mine...must be scottsdale, az quotes. Renting equipment is even cheaper...go less than 4 hours prior to close and you won't have to return it until 9 am the next day. Trick I use sometimes.

Nick Shadow Too late, I’m sure to be helpful, but I often use a multi tool (oscillating), like a Rigid or Dremil, with metal/wood cutting blade to get at nails, mortar and the occasional screw that someone inconsiderately uses believing it will never be removed. Actually, I often find wood screws under tile ctops. Sucks....

It's a good idea to remove the refrigerator and oven away as you did. But I don't think I'm going to remove the dishwasher. It's under the cabinet and all I have is the little trim on the face. I think I can protect the dishwasher and then carefully remove the tile on the face. Is there a reason that I'm not thinking of for removing the dishwasher?

Hi I have title counter tops I hate them. Theu are little titles from the 60's or 70's maybe even when this house was built in the 50's nothing has been updated in the kitchen. I want to get rid of the title. Your video helped with that. Bit my problem is, I do not have a lot of money. I what can I do with the counter tops?

Might be possible to unscrew counter from under cabinets. If you remove entire countertop it would be super heavy. You would still need tools to break it up somehow.

PS, if you try to pry it up by getting a bar between the top of cabinet and MDF top, you will ruin your cabinets, please do not attempt that first!!!! The tops a very heavy and springy, it will not work.

“Ram Board” is best option (of course they come in large rolls). If you have any old boxes you could cut up. Move it along w your work area. As an alternative to our method… You can also try and unscrew the half inch or three-quarter inch plywood from the cabinets and lift up. Of course, you still got to break it up to lift it up but that is another option.

Ha might be a rhetorical question… that option is still going to be a mess. The weight of the countertop would have to be dealt with. If you had a way to cut it in pieces and remove it that would work. Still a mess

I have seen other videos that show you can pop off the plywood without removing the tiles individually. Seems much much easier to remove plywood and replacing it is super easy too. Thoughts?

I would remove tile & plywood. I had the manpower and tools so it made it "easy" for us to removed tile. New countertop fit perfect with plywood that was left

why wouldn't you just unscrew the ply wood off? and remove it all together vs messing with removing the tile since you are putting quartz over it?

I had to pick my poison here. Some of screws I couldn't get too so it was slightly damage lower cabinets or get messy. It also allowed us to use plywood for new countertop install.

I do not. This is my father-in-laws “old” kitchen. Home depot was going to charge $850.00 to do it so myself and Barry did it. I paid him $100.00. Most people are doing quartz & granite countertops. Find a good fabricator to help you if thats what your looking for. I would definitely take on Laminate....much easier and far less cheaper. Sorry I couldn’t help

Quick answer no...i have sold several of them and nobody has returned. I would rent one from homestore as first option. I honestly have no problem with budget tools because a tool like a hammer drill i use only occasionally. So by limited use will last longer if that makes sense. Thanks for heads up on link it has been a long time since i checked them.

If you can try and unscrew the top from within the base cabinets. And if you were able to do that, at that point you can just lift up the countertop. Obviously it’s going to be very heavy but a good option.

thanks for the examples of removing mortar i have the ceramic tile up but i did not know how to remove the mortar 1 inch thick iam 140lbs and lady that has never tiled before im putting down porcelain tile & home depot said i have to remove the mortar & put pile wood & hardie backer. Do you know if thats correct? what would you do?

If you are not using Home Depot to demo your old tile countertop, then yes you have to do all the prep. You can probably hire a handyman to demo what you have and then add plywood top to cabinets (if he cannot salvage old plywood under your current countertop). We were able to salvage old plywood in this project. As a previous comment mentioned, you could pull up tile, mortar, and wood but you would need to replace the wood. Sorry for lengthy response. I hope that helps.

Some old fregs it is not good to unplug and quickly pulg back in. Excess pressure may build up in the compressor line and it may not start again. If you unplug a freg best to wait a few minutes to plug back on again. Your music audio volume goes real high near the end . Your expert should ware a respire too because cement has Asbestos in ! Thank you

this was about 3-4 hours of work and the guy that helped me had demo'd my father-in-law's bathroom so I asked him to help me with this kitchen. Best $100 I have spent in a while.

Not sure if I understand the question....you want the plywood to be the countertop? Sand/epoxy - would not recommend. If you want a wood countertop...you can get order through most tile companies or go to wood store in your area and order. Not sure if that is what you were asking...

@@Mmolson16 if you are going with a laminate countertop, I would just buy off the shelf at home depot/Lowe's. Relatively cheap. We used this plywood as a base to put new quartz countertop. The plywood could also be used as a base for a tile install. Hope that helps...

Tile counter tops are a scourge, no doubt about it. They have never looked good, and removing them is a huge pain in the ass. I loathe them so much I would never buy a house with them because the inevitable removal is absolutely dreadful.

You said at the beginning that you are installing a quartz ctop, therefore I don’t understand why you did not remove the tile edges and then simply pry the plywood ctop base off of cabinets, tile, mortar and all. It appears you did a lot of work and made an enormous mess just to preserve a plywood top that will have to be removed before the quartz is installed. You did a lot of work to avoid paying THD $850. You’d have really been disappointed to learn that for $850, THD would have had your ctop removed in about 15 minutes and without the huge mess.

adamttreat123 Stone ctops are typically installed directly on top of base cabinets without any wood underlayment. I say typically, because I’ve seen a few with a 1/4” sheet of mdf installed(flush out top of cabinets, but not overhanging) between ctop and base cabinets(2 or 3 out of about 24 over the past year). Not sure why this was done.

@Hoby Dillon Is there a video you know of demonstrating this? I thought about just removing the plywood, tile, mortar, chicken wire and all myself, then i removed 2 very long screws that were screwed into cabinets and realized it wasn't as easy as I thought. Honestly i would really love an easier way to remove these hideous tile countertops and if it's possible to remove plywood and all..that would be so so very ideal. Thanks!

@@tangychocolate5 What did you end up doing w/ wood ? I had a demo guy stop 2/3 of way thru. I have a granite guy coming in 4 days and dont know how to get wood frame and final layer up. Mine has some of bolts ( like your screws in the layer under tile. ( I got the tile off . The next layer is like thick masonry pad or such ??). Anyone see this have any thoughts?

To much time and effort to save cheap plywood in my humble opinion . I would have took it all off at once and trashed it. That looks like 2 maybe 3 sheets tops of cheap plywood. And who has a hammer chisel? Lol

Good point!lol Even though it was "involved", only took a couple of hours...plywood was in great shape and new countertops fits perfectly.
