If you would like to see how your PCB board would look in an enclosure or in a box, it’s very easy to do. This is a simple DesignSpark tutorial about creating a box around PCB.

+Mvorisek Thank you very much :) The software is easy to use. Of course, for more complicated designs you may need to spend more time by playing with it. Simple stuff can be done very quickly. I mostly use it to create things for our 3D printer.

I'm sure you just saved me weeks of headache in freecad :) I have multiple boards plugged together so will try and group them together and build the box around it , saves on making a lot of measurements

Have a look also at Fusion 360 .. they have free license for hobbyists, Fusion 360 can export into step file and also make 3d models look more natural (you can apply materials)

@@RobertFeranec OK yes I should try it. Do you know if you can position circle cutouts in a box construction using center points whilst having clear measurements displayed? I also need the possibility to move the circle cutouts after thay are made. It seams every cad program I try finds this task difficult. It seams you have to fill in the cutout rather than just move it. Quite frustrating. I have many cutouts to make in a box and these will change over time as the design progresses so I need the possibility to edit the cylinder cutout position and size after they are made. The RS fee software seams to be fairly good since I can import 3d Pcb's to it and measure off them but this still does'nt allow positioning from center. Maybe I have the whole concept wrong. Should I make the origin of the cylinders for cutouts of a box in the center of the cylinder? I'm fairly OK at using 3 studio but never had to scale things properly before as it was for video work only.

@@BenBilesBB-box Oh, I am not sure. I am not expert in using this software. Maybe try to ask RS Components support directly? Maybe there can be some other kind of different approach, where you change one thing and it will update everywhere else. I know the FUSION 360 has relationship features (for example, there could be a possibility to define something like: THIS is the same as THIS and if you change it it will automatically update everywhere). Try to have a look here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nZ2ymIljiWk.html

Overall, very good. Certainly informative. However, as I am by no means a mechanical designer (I am a EE for over 30 years), I have build a number of products by supervising the work of mechanical designers. Some questions that I have are very obvious. For example, how is the PCB supposed to get into this box? Is it a friction fit? If so, what box materials could be used that would stretch that much? Also, how do we open and close this box. Finally, if there are mounting holes in the PCB (I don't really remember if that was the case) then were are the mounts in the Box. I apologize if I am "nitpicking" or too critical. Again, very informative, and good luck to you.

Hi Tom. The truth is, I made the video when I was thinking about Hardware Design Engineers and I completely forgot, that also a lot of other people may watch it. My idea behind the video is to show people who normally do not use CAD, that it is not so hard to start with it, to give them some basics and after that they can continue by themselves. PS: You are not nitpicking

After finishing the case, is it possible to import the 3Dmodel into Altium? I've even tried to open it with Solidworks, save it in step and import 3dmodel in altium and I keep receiving the error: "no 3D model data found".
@RobertFeranec
@RobertFeranec 5 лет назад
I have not tried. I think they have also STEP extension (you can buy something to be able to export to STEP and I think it was not very expensive) - maybe that could help. Also, try to import stl into Solidworks, maybe that could be transferred to STEP?
@juanmism91
@juanmism91 5 лет назад
@@RobertFeranecI didn't know about the add-on modules, thank you for your reply. . If someone else is interested I found them in the following link: designspark.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/211867685 About using Solidworks, I opened the *.STL file in Solidworks and then save it in *.STEP (both AP203 and AP 214) and in *.SLDPRT which are extensions supported by Altium 2018. The problem comes when placing the 3D body in Altium. I keep receiving the error "no 3D model data found" when trying to embed the model. It could be my lack of familiarity using Solidworks (that's why I was trying to use something somehow easier as DesignSpark). When saving in Solidworks there are several options apart from choosing the extension. As far as I've seen in other online tutorials, by only choosing 'Export as Solid/Surface geometry' shoud work. Unfortunately it's not the case. Have you ever imported from Solidworks to Altium? Do you have any tips?

Thanks for the video, it is very helpful! I'm wondering how much would it cost to get 2-3 such boxes manufactured? What would be the usual way to manufacture small amounts - is it 3d printing or something else?
@RobertFeranec
@RobertFeranec 8 лет назад
+aga1nst we have a 3D printer, so I usually 3D print them. See an example here: www.imx6rex.com/2014/12/see-how-your-product-could-look/ However, 3D printed box only can be used as a demo or visualization, it can not be shipped to customer.

+Robert Feranec That looks pretty good, I'll try it. I've been using openscad to make the 3d models for now, but the DesignSpark seems quite good also. Thanks!
