I am a NASM-CPT, CES, Trainer with about 5 years of training under my belt. I know you explained how you gained an understanding of the assessment and program design process from all your experience and schooling. Can you explained how you possibly assess and train a client with in only a 30-60 minute window. I truly support what you said about a good trainer will not simply just throw a client into a workout. I know from experience that I can not sleep well with out knowing the biomechanics, functional anatomy, and tendencies of a client. This is very hard for me to do with out working myself to death. I find it interesting but hard because there is so much to know about what each client pacifically requires to be the best they can be. FMS, is something I've learned and used before. Is there a certain list of assessments that are not just as obvious as a overhead squat assessment, that you have learned to be effective and quicker at helping you obtain crucial information on a client. As someone who survives off this trade I'm trying to find as many ways to become more efficient and productive all on a small time frame while still appealing to each client so that I can retain them every week, month, and year. Any thoughts?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 6 лет назад
Man, you definitely sound just how i was struggling a few years back. Knowledge IS power but more knowledge comes greater responsibility AND challenges. It is impossible to get a FULL assessment with a client with just an hour a week. No one can do it. When this happens, you as the professional must make the best and most honest assessment based on the time and resources you're given. Some clients will be easy to assess and some others will take hours and hours of testing. It really comes down to what the client needs / wants. Some clients just want to sweat and lose weight. And if you don't do that for them, they will leave. Trust me, I've had clients where I gave a 30s assessment to see what kind of training style they wanted without sacrificing what they actually needed. You can't win them all but the BEST way to keep a client coming back is to keep them happy regardless of what they actually need... it's a tough situation but use your best judgement. -Coach Brian.
@Coolbreeze24
@Coolbreeze24 5 лет назад
I am a ACSM certified training with 7 years of training experience. What I have discovered through the years, is the need for an assessment questionnaire. This can be something the client can fill out before the first session with all the questions you need to start designing a program. It's also helpful to know cause and effect for the more common issues people may have. An example being, someone with arthritis in a joint is typically going to have some weakness, difficultly with some movements and stiffness in the affected joint. Having modifications for exercises is also important especially once the session begins. You never want to waste a client's session time trying to figure what exercise they can tolerate. A trainer is constantly assessing the client's movements and ability to better structure and design a program. Feedback from the client after movements can also help with knowing if an exercise is effective or something else needs to be done. Documentation during the client's rest period will give you something to review once the session is over with and help you prepare future sessions. Lastly, I've learned you can spend an hour designing the perfect session for a client and before the session they complain of certain issues they are dealing with, WHICH WILL HAPPEN, and the exercises for that session may then become useless, so having the ability to think on the fly and have alternate exercises already in mind will be a tremendous skill that will make you indispensable as a trainer.

Optic500 I’m not sure if this is the case or not but If you’re a trainer at a corporate gym I do believe you must take whatever clients they give you but if you are an independent contractor then you can fully choose who you work with! Definitely if you are independent you have every right to tell a client that you and them are not a good fit in a respectful way and perhaps even recommend them to someone else. Hope this helps

Good Morning. Left a 👍. Just a couple of comments. Not a personal trainer- just retired and attempting to improve ‘quality of life’ and increase my chances of actually sitting in front of the TV and watch the first ‘humans’ land on Mars. There are only two-to-three people on RU-vid that I follow on a regular basis- and, you are one those three. Suggestions- not to be misinterpreted as a derogatory critique. (1) a smart board would have increase ‘situation awareness’ and ‘time efficiency’ (preparation and use of current technology is key when presenting); (2) your thoughts on an ‘staggered implementation strategy’ allowing a more accurate assessment and a more accurate re-assessment; (3) your thoughts on ‘static vs dynamic’ at each stage of the implementation phase (those of us in our Golden Sneakers journey have ‘not limitations’ but ‘challenges’ that can be overcome through good information and as you mentioned “the right program.” Thank You for the wealth of information you provide in all of your videos. Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Prosperous 2018, and beyond.

I’m a new personal trainer and with a new client that I am training for any strength work I start with core work, to really emphasize bracing in preparation for any load. I noticed your core work is at the end. I need to rethink my layout for doing multi joint/complex exercises before the single joint, unilateral exercises.
@markw8139
@markw8139 5 лет назад
Same kind of thing in UK...except with YMCA you also do 15-20 mins cardio BEFORE main strength..I've always found, (despite not recommended for hypertrophy) this works better because it primes the central nervous system for complex movements

I have a question. When working with a client, how do you assess the weight that is appropriate for them in each part of the workout? For example, when doing heavy compound movements, we would have the client do 4-6 reps. But how do you decide the weight that this client should lift for these reps? How do you know the maximum that they can lift, and use that to determine how heavy the weight show be? Is there an assessment for this, and a formula to calculate it? Or is it just guesswork based on observation? I couldn’t find any videos that talk about this 😕
@amaterasu8829

I have the knowledge, but I'm nervous for my interview today. Im still a little unsure on what specific lifts to structure each individual client with. I know a lot of technical information, and use them on myself, but I'm not that great of a speaker either. I guess mostly im just brand new to this, and im generly a quiet person. I hope the gym im applying to is willing to understand im brand new, and help me learn to be a professional PT for the first time

Hey coach, I'm currently in my last semester of school at University of North Carolina at Pembroke, I will be getting my bachelor's in exercise science with a concentration in exercise physiology in may. I also played football for three years while attending the University. This video was very helpful. This is one of the biggest things I struggle with. I have a hard time knowing exactly what's the best program for somebody or knowing exactly what exercises to use and how much of it they should do. If you could please give me some more information it would be very helpful!
@sarahsarita4852
@sarahsarita4852 5 лет назад
Well, I hope you graduated. From May if you started working, there's some experience on your sleeve. You don't have to worry about which exercise or program for who. It's not a one size fits all. I give a cocktail of exercises just to beat the 'no change at all' at assessment. But I know what % of the different exercises I give. Some get fat loss with more cardio while others with resistance . Also don't be afraid to try and err. You will learn from it. Inform the client if they don't have progress in their goals. Power of info/ knowledge helps.

If you want to be a wellness coach, don't wait until you have qualifications, just go for it. Pick a specific area in which you feel you can generate premium results for your clients. You will always be a student as learning never stops, but there is no right time to start other than now if this is something you want to do. Very informative video! I have a question, for a % based program, how do you figure out how much weight for a certain number of reps? Let’s say if it’s 3 sets of 8 reps, how much should the weight be? Since 8 RM is 80% of 1RM, how much lower should the weight be? Is 10-15% lower a good range? Thank you!
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 5 лет назад
You would first need to determine what your 1RM is of that particular exercise. Lifting at 75-80% of your 1RM is a fair range however it comes down to what your overall program looks like & what you're wanting to achieve

@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 2 года назад
Very similar for children. Just add more games/fun to the program. Check out the book “The New Rules of Lifting”. Alwynn Cosgrove is a genius for program design.
@theendurancefitnessacademy4826
Is there a reason why the program design doesn't cover any type of cardio workout if the client's goal is for weight loss? or does it vary within each workout session?

It depends on the goals. Thanks for commenting. Have an awesome day!

can you make a video explaining sets and reps in relation to an individual looking to make muscle strength and or endurance gains? Thanks
@petermedenwaldt2680
@petermedenwaldt2680 6 лет назад
Well is it for a beginner, intermediate, or advanced lifter? For beginners and intermediates a linear periodization plan would work great (look up prilipens chart). As you get more advanced there will have to be more variation as your body can't recover from the heavier weight

Your honest opinion. I bought NASM a while ago but been procrastinating a lot in studying. I’ve been lifting for over 8 years. I’m kinda giving up on the course and might just jump into becoming a trainer off the back. What would you say in this case? Plus not planning to work for a Gym.
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 4 года назад
Well this is your call. What I will say is that having a certification from a recognized institution has it's benefits in insurance for you as well as your client and there are a lot of people that feel more comfortable hiring/ working with a trainer who has their certification.

Do you have any recommendations for the best way to track clients progress apart from using expensive apps?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 5 лет назад
There are tons of inexpensive apps available. But I would suggest talking to some other trainers at your local gyms and asking them what they are using that works; as well as some of the online trainers forums out there for their suggestions & recommendations

For this type of knowledge, would you suggest NASM CPT or NSCA CPT?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 3 года назад
Well ultimately those two certifications are very similar. Both are internationally recognized organizations that are very credible.

Now if you went one notch above that and did the NSCA, CSCS certification, that would be your best most highly regarded certification.

@@Criticalbench Yea, I am interested in this as well but wasn't sure if it would help me work with individual clients. From your expertise and experience, would it work? Program design and performance is a big deal for me. NASM has PES but I know nothing about this specialization.

@@GabeCuello Hey Gabe I’m not familiar with the NASM NES... but anything through that organization is going to be solid. They have a great reputation. And certainly anything through them or NSCA will set you up very well for working with clients.

Hi there, when designing for reps and sets, for example doing 12 reps of 3 sets. Should that be based on the 12 rep max and so on. Thanks
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 5 лет назад
Do you mean your "1 rep max?"
@garylyall4236

No I was thinking was it based on the heaviest a person can lift performing 12 reps. If that makes sense .

Have you ever designed your programs where you start with stability exercises and then move into compound movements afterwards?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 6 лет назад
Hey Jan, that's not typical of most PT sessions, especially if you're looking to work with moderate to heavy loads. Activation exercises for the core and other muscles are great before Compound Training to wake your body up but typically stability exercises would come at the end of your compound movements. You don't want to overly fatigue the core/stability muscles before you must rely on them for strong and safe lifts. This of course is dependent on the individual and the level of intensity the session requires. Coach Chris

How do you determine rep and set ranges for clients?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 3 года назад
The standard rep range is usually somewhere between 10-12 however, this depends on what the clients goals are. For example, someone training for powerlifting is better suited to be working within a 5-8 rep range and probably doing somewhere around 5 sets. So it's very important to know exactly what the clients goals are and design their program with the intention of achieving those goals.
@danielbowton2927
@danielbowton2927 3 года назад
Great thank you. Would that then apply to different muscle groups aswell? So 5-8 reps 5 sets on squat for power and 6-12 reps 4 sets for muscle development hypertrophy on biceps for example?
