Nice build. I'm watching this because I am building something totally different - a fume extractor for a CNC laser, but it uses a lot of the same ideas. Also, just wanted to point out that silicon is a chemical element which is basically a hard, metal rock. Silicone is what you use for caulking =)

You don't need to use birch, but it will paint nice. Cheaper alternatives would be either AC or BC sanded pine. The letters stand for the grade of wood used on each side. "A" has no knots, "B" may have some small knots with "football" plugs covering larger ones, "C" will have knots. Also when cutting birch or oak, the side facing up will splinter when cutting with a circular saw. The bottom side won't. It may also happen when using pine, but that depends on the blade you're using.

I would guess based on how he made this that only half of the pre-filter every shows any sign of dirt. For better air entertainment I would have rotated the blower 90deg, with the intake facing the front wall, and put the pre-filter on the back. This will ensure that air is being pulled through the entire pre-filter, not just the area under it.

FreshCap Mushrooms quick question. What substrate would you recommend for a noob grower, straw, wood chips or grain? Can you even grow in grain? Sorry, one more. Do mushrooms only need carbs to grow, wouldn’t adding vitamins and minerals increase yields? Thank you kind sir ;)
@FreshCapMushrooms
@FreshCapMushrooms 6 лет назад
Depends on what you have to treat the substrate and what species. If you can sterilize in a pressure cooker, I would suggest sawdust supplemented with bran, works for almost all gourmet and medicinal species. Or the "masters" mix which is 50-50 soy hulls and sawdust for anything other than shiitake. And for the nutrition requirement, it depends on species, but primarily sugars (bran) and lignin from the wood

Seems like most people are using pressure cookers and wont have this problem but if you are running a lamina hoods it might be something they have an issue with and I am now curious about your setup in particular. My autoclave draws 14.5 amps and now I am looking into adding another breaker for it. I was just wondering what this fan draws and if you might of have the same problem? Probably not a problem for most but just something else to think about when getting into this adventure and you are trying to figure out costs.

Really nice build and great plans. Thank you so much. You asked for corrections so here's mine. There's a difference between silicon and silicone. two different words, two entirely different substances. Silicon is the element used to make transistors. The pronunciation is different also. thanks again.

in my opinion using wood is completely flawed. u cannot see what is happening inside? is dirt gathering inside? maybe mold? it is completely out of your control. it is better to make it plexiglass, and ideally with some door to open it and clean it. though the very idea is good. i would recommend making plexiglass improvement. even just one plexi or small plexiglass door would make a difference to keep it hygenic. i have enjoyed your movies and your channel, so i am giving u my honest feedback.

This is great! I love your content. I've been setting up a small lab space for yeast culturing for sake brewing. I'm also building an incubator for making koji (rice inoculated with aspergillus oryzae). I just realized that this is also pretty much the same equipment I need to grow mushrooms, so I was thinking I'd try to grow something easy like Lion's Mane. 1. When using a flow hood, do I need to worry about safety? E.g. if I try to grow mycelium on an agar plate and it's contaminated with something bad, do I have to worry about air blowing directly toward me? 2. In my yeast lab, I'm currently using an alcohol lamp. Brewing blogs say that this creates a small "sterile" field around the lamp because of the flame's updraft. Would this work for mushroom growing?

I know a little improvement that would help extend your filter life and efficiency at filtering out the bad stuff. Install a uv-c lamp that is usually installed in hvac systems. This will kill all the air once it passes the pre-filter on the top of the box that is built around the blower intake. Uvc helps to kill all germs, bacteria, and viruses.

Pocket hole screws would be a good option for this.

Nice. Does anyone know a link to a video showing how much air is coming out? Like a flame or smoke test video? All the calculation videos I've seen don't give me any kind of idea what I'm looking to have acceptable flow coming out. What's too much, what's too little and useless. I'm thinking about using pvc to make a box I can walk into, covered pvc frame with painters plastic filter mounted to the pvc frame and a shop vac pulling air from the opposite side. Will I have enough flow in front of a small hepa filter? I'm just learning all this and have only been growing for 5 months. Did my 1st lc to agar in my kitchen in open air and had 4 out of 20 dishes grow something extra. If my idea will help me reduce to 0 out of 20 I'll do it but I'm wondering how much air you want blowing past you as your working on your projects?

I'm curious too. I just got materials fan, filters...will be building this week. Using 2 Merv 16 filters 20x25 side by side 6 inch thick. I bought a 12 dollar anemonitor? To check wind speed after filter. Thinking about making box 25 x 40 wide but slightly bigger to fit 24x48 if I need a HEPA later? What are your thoughts?

Do you have a link for the hepa filter? I am struggling to find one matching the description. I was trying to find the 24 x 48 astrocel partical board frame with .3 micron filter size

wiring explanation would be appreciated. where is the green grounded in your box or your blower. which are connected to your power switch? Your first section explaining connected wires do not coordinate with all the wires still sticking out in the box in the following shots.. please help me, I built the whole thing and am stuck on this basic wiring. connecting directly to power is no problem with the diagram- how do you put the switch in the mix...

So I'm building this now and the wiring diagram doesn't show the ground being used. Did you use the ground in the little grey box on the blower? In the build plans you said to ensure that its grounded properly... I'm not trying to hire an electrician lol. Thank you for this video and build plans!

@Freshcap Mushrooms How did you wire the switch? You sped through the wiring part and didn't show how you wired it. I looked through the pdf and you didn't show a clear picture of what went to what. I understand liability and all that but if you were to at least show a clear view of the wiring it would help alot of us out with not having to shell out more of our hard earned money on an electrician. Help us broke growers out!
