I don’t even want to go into fashion, I’m just here because I find this stuff super duper interesting (and I love drawing, and want to add some fashion to my work), but I still learn so much and it’s a really fascinating and well made video! Thanks Professor Hong!!

When I was in fashion school, I don’t recall doing this exercise or discussing the different price points. Heck, we barely touched on the design seasons or how they were changing (I was in school about 20 years ago.) I swear, the longer I’m out of school, the more knowledge I find missing from my “education.” It’s really hard to ask questions when you have no idea what you should be asking. Thank you for shedding some light on the business of being an apparel designer.

I was in fashion school about 5 years and i dont remember designing for different price points either. More teachers should use this this concept. Most students design within the contemporary range and up when not everyone is going to end up there

Fashion is in the trade category. Degree in it is a joke. Collage is good for anything with strict rules that need to be adhered to, ex medical, engineering, law. If you're in school for fashion and using text material, by the time its printed, its already irrelevant. If you want to do fashion, do business, then apprentice under someone so you have hands on experience and network network network. Sorry you wasted time

AMEN to shopping for fabric and notions in order to get a feeling for why some garments are so expensive. I sew for myself and people are always shocked that a dress I make myself ends up costing the same or more than a store bought one (unless I get REALLY lucky with a bargain). Great fabric is freaking expensive.

The very last jacket being labeled couture insanity, I love it. 😂 It's always so interesting hearing what you have to say about multiple ways to do something. Especially bc it's so easy to think that something should be a certain specific way, but I guess that's bc we're so used to seeing a finished final product and not the process of how it got there. It also always fascinates me how you can so accurately draw lines SO close together without overlapping. Skills.

This is literally not only one of the most informative fashion design videos I've ever watched, but also probably the one that teaches me the most valuable information - my dream is to create a brand with various lines at various price points (like the Ralph Lauren example you mentioned) and I had literally no idea about how I would do that until this video! I'm so excited to get designing and use what you've taught me, and also the designs you draw in this video were BEAUTIFUL

Love this comprehensive look at fashion categories and your perspective. I would submit there's an additional fashion category between "Luxury" like Gucci and LV to "Haute Couture" lines of designer fashion houses: "High Fashion". This is what Akris for instance attempts and the ready to wear lines from Chanel and Valentino. While Gucci and LV sell the aesthetic of luxury and often at the price point, it's hardly luxury among those in high fashion and the consumers thereof. Their leather goods are well marketed but often fake; their fabrics are conservative and saleable but far from able to be described as luxurious. The fine line between say Gucci's idea of luxury and bonafide members of fédération de la haute couture et de la mode is larger than the average Joe Blow imagines. I'd LOVE to see a video on that, @ZoeHong, PLEASE!...most people have no idea.

Love it! I do pay attention to those details in every pieces that I had purchased. Last year i bought a short from Reiss full price I paid because really love the way it fits me, after trying one at Aritzia Babaton brand that I did liked but the Reiss short has everything that I always look for my shorts; then a month later at Macys I found a short for 16 dls on sale so I bought 3 diferents color. Today all those 4 shorts are loose on me because i drop off few lbs. Reiss doesnt have my actual sizes anymore, so I descontructed it to do some alteration and I can see why it cost me so much mkore than the ones at macys.

Hey, I wanted to share a tidbit on the TJ Maxx Marshalls Ross statement. I have worked for a few brands that specifically have lines just for them or have developed products for their request under the fashion brand's name. I love your videos and thought you would like to know that they are not just buying closeouts anymore. Some brands while designing their collection will develop protos in the same items at a lesser cost for the material. That way the item will have the same name as the product in store but the finish or color name is specifically for Tj Maxx, Ross, and Marshall's

It's funny when you see in terms of clothing the higher ends tend to go nuts as compared to the lower ends but in bag industry the higher ends would make is as simple as possible in terms of designs as compared to the lower end ones.
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 5 лет назад
This was just an example. There are a lot of ways to go high end and sometimes streamlining design makes things look the most expensive. Mark up for bags is a different game altogether though.

I bought a tan London Fog trench in 1985, I struggled with the purchase because I really wanted it, and it was expensive. I paid $65 , I made $10 per hour. I wore that coat for 20 years, it was still in good shape, and held up style wise. This brings up an interesting comparison...I was working as an RN....the last I worked in that field was 2010, made $35 per hour, and a similar coat still cost $65. The comparative cost of shoes and clothing, in the moderate price range is more in the favor of the consumer now. Now housing, that is another question.

Hi, I love your videos and know your busy, but I would love it if you could answer this question. I saw in one of your old videos you worked in fashion education. I am a junior in high school and I would love to become a fashion/ fashion design teacher. I know it is specific, but I would love a job that combines my love for teaching, fashion and helping people. My question is, what should I look for/ major in college. Should I major in teaching or major in fashion design? I have acquired some good sewing skills over the years and sewing and garment creation is definitely one of my favorite things to do. Thanks for your help.

Most fashion schools don't care if you have a teaching degree or not. They are more concerned with a fashion degree and industry experience. Generally, most schools won't hire you without industry experience unless you went to that same school and you were a great student.

I got an Eddie Bauer 100% denim jacket from the 1990s/early 2000s from an upscale thrift store for $11 a few months ago. It has a little wear on the inside, but is in very good condition as a whole. I just saw the saw exact design from the same brand at Kohl's yesterday. They wanted almost $80 for a cheaper cotton/polyester blend fabric version. I just laughed. It would be neat to see a video about how quality/production within the same brand can vary over time and what common reasons are for this.

Fascinating! I understand that you'd want to minimize fabric waste by designing patterns with many smaller pieces. But that means there are more seams to sew, which calls for more work by a human seam worker. Am I to understand that fabric is more expensive than human labor in garment production? It's kind of the same thing (fabric $$ > workers $) when it comes to raglan vs. set-in sleeves. Set-in sleeves are harder to sew vs. raglan sleeves, so SI sleeves need more human touch. But it sounds like they're cheaper than easier-to-sew raglan sleeves. Wild.

In my country fashion industry and garment price point are sometimes VERY BAD, me and my mom made custom made order clothes, so our price is a bit higher.. our frequent customer gets it, but some just.. mock people like us, since for them buying things online or at the mall is better, BUT stuffs with S/M/L sizes hits and misses on the measurement.. so, rather than going to us for appointment some people have the balls to just ask my mom to measure them then ask my mom for that measurement to give to other dressmaker for cheaper price.. mind you we never ever give real measurements away, plus mom always write only in numbers and never add any details.. at one point this EP asked my mom to just give her the basic pattern since she want to make one for cheaper price, we blacklisted her, plus she's the type that calculates every sewing by cm and asked for things to be remodelled every fitting (we're not a couture house, but we do have standards).. there's also a lot of business that sells clothes at very lower price since there's no regulation whatsoever in Garment industry, most of the workers got so little pay and the fabric quality is as crappy as it gets.. And some just plainly scam people, by reselling shitty clothes in higher price in between "collection" (more like a curated resell) and by paying influencers and bloggers they can sell a lot, and since people are very social media driven they often leave good reviews even tho' the outfit looked really wonky on them.. and sometimes the bad reviews are deleted anyways.. Point is.. Fashion Industry is scary, it is a though place.. and money talks..

Thanks! What category would you define UniQlo to be at? Also, as the gap between technology and fashion becomes closer, I am wondering if you'd make a video about your opinion about future fashion "categories" such as techwear, and the likes? I want to start my own Techwear brand, but all resources I ever find are tutorials for fashion that we know today. P.S I've been BINGING on your channel the past week, and I have learned so much from them! I hope you never stop making them.

Uniqlo is budget/mass. By techwear, do you mean wearables? Wearable tech like fitbits?

Hi again🤗!!! Again, thank you for this video!!! I am so sorry for this novel of a comment: I am still a little confused on what I think my price market is. At first I thought I wanted to have a contemporary brand that valued ethical business practices and environmental impact awareness and thinking I can model it after The Gap or Banana Republic and selling $25 button up shirts would be ok. But I just had a conversation with someone from the industry that based on my values that that price is way too low and that if I wanted to make a profit starting out, that I should definitely aim higher. What would you think companies like Madewell or People Tree would be considered? P.s thank you for taking the time out to teach us and give us guidance. You're such a great teacher and mentor💕💕

I have a question about the difference in high quality fabrics vs low quality for an example lets use hoodies. Lets say I buy a hoodie for 400 dollars from a somewhat expensive brand stone island or Alyx and a 40 dollar one from vans. With both hoodies made out of 100% cotton I feel a quality in the 400 dollar stone island vs the vans one. The 400 hundred feels stronger a bit heavier/sturdier than the vans but yet still soft where as the vans is lighter and a it more flimsy. Where does the quality come from? is there a thread count difference why is one feel so much different than the other? Is the process that makes them different done prior to going to fabric shops or do brands have a special processing that they use for their fabrics? I hope my question wasn't too confusing lol

Is there a way you could work up the “ranks” of the levels of fashion? For example could I start with a line in TJ Max then eventually start my own house?

Yes, people start new brands at a different price point later on all the time, some start cheap and get more expensive, some go the other way, like Donna Karan and DKNY, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, Gap and their companies, etc.

Hi Zoe Hong I'm one of your new subscriber just wanted to ask if what kind of paper did you use here while sketching? Cause it's a little transparent? Thank you so much 🥰

May I know what paper and silhouette you’re using to trace and draw the designs?
