It can be hard to do something custom like this unless you get into 5,10 or 20k units, but right?! When you can get that funding to do larger volumes it pays off.
@@processagresources if starting of as a brand with no funding other than my own savings, would you recommend I invest more money into the packaging to begin with or develop and improve on it further along? I’m very conflicted about this!
@@SumeyaHassan don’t even bother. Yes presentation is important. Do a simple a design that works .Everyone wants to be like Apple. If I were you I would invest the quality of scent, candle holder and wax. At the end of the day customer wants a good quality candle not a fancy packaging (that goes to the bin) and what a waste of resources. If a brand is not sustainable, sorry I am not buying.
@@SumeyaHassan packaging is especially important because that is the first thing consumers see, and nowadays people like to post everything eye-catching at social media that will mostly contribute in the growth of your brand. Good packaging doesn't always means lots of fancy papers and prints that cost a lot, sometimes I prefer simple aesthetic-ish products. But do keep in mind that with a good packaging, comes people's high expectations, so… yeah both is as important as the other I guess
Indeed. I will always respect less packaging, its literally going in the recycling (which actually goes straight to the dump) immediately. At this point, superfluous packaging is cluless and obnoxious.
@@sbg1911 Did you see our video on the 'Seed packaging'? (Branding Minimalism/Sustainable Packaging video) It's probably the most sustainable I've ever seen that also great an amazing presentation all while protecting the product.
What I learned is, I’m gonna stick to cardboard boxes and bubble wrap, after you nitpicking a company that saved 2.7 to make a almost perfect product. Lol
If your product is great, and can get it in front of a lot of people...put it in an old soup can. Product > Packaging....but packaging and brand sure helps :)
Dude right? Like how does a company who has that much money to spend, make an expensive box look so cheap?I feel like there are better options than a box and bubble wrap though still that doesn’t cost 2.7 mill. We can still do better than a cardboard box and bubble wrap. Back to the drawing board!
One question did you buy it for the Box or did you buy for the candle. At the end of the day either the box is going in the garbage or in a closet. If the person is a hoarder
Product > Packaging. Packaging helps sell the product and that's what I'm trying to demonstrate. It makes it giftable, it's what gives the candle a shot at being successful. Now if the candle isn't good...then it's a very short lived business :)
I love this question because there is a strong argument for when ....is too much? I love it more when a brand can both capture an unbelievable unboxing experience and keep it more sustainable.
This was so satisfying to watch. I love the idea of having an overall “clean” look, like an all white packaging with pops of color. I agree with the “pick apart” comments of the box and overall it’s absolutely beautiful. What would you recommend for bath products, i.e. body butters and bath soaks? Just curious…
Cool concept, but it’s one of those things that just adds to the cost without adding to the value of the product itself for the customer. Customization is a neat addition for sure. Terribly wasteful overall. I get it, it’s higher end and trying to sell the experience vs. the product itself, but the maximalism is counterintuitive to sustainability.
I feel ya. It's extra special when a brand can really nail the unboxing experience and brand impression all while maintaining sustainability. I think you'd love what Seed is doing with their presentation and sustainability here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TVhjzvVu4iw.html
Yeah - I think one powerful thing they've done here is protect the product while creating a beautiful presentation. Would rather see it in a nice EVA than bubble wrap. They could have gone more sustainable by placing in a molded pulp for sure.
Would it be possible to design packaging that encourages reuse for storage? I feel when metal components are used in packaging (or hust really nice packaging in general), I feel it kind of a shame to throw it out.
Lauren, for sure! We are seeing a lot of packaging that is built to not be thrown away. What packaging do you have laying around the house that you've kept? Ask yourself why you have kept it around? Those are the questions major brands are asking themselves, is how they design packaging that people don't want to throw away. I have always kept premium and wood box packaging I have received and reused as storage compartments in drawers, etc.
@@processagresources I’ve a metal container that housed my wallet now housing my Polaroid photos instead. Perfect fit. I had an iPhone box housing my rechargeable batteries, but with the recent addition of my 18650 battery cells, I require something not so flammable now. My iPhone box is too small for the Polaroids though. 🤔 Wonder if I could fit a toothbrush and some toiletries in there though. Could make for a handy Go-Box. I actually don’t have many phone boxes. My iPhone 11 was my second phone I’d bought brand new. The rest were hand-me-downs or bought used. 😅 Probably one of my favorite cheap packagings was when I got my Zebralight flashlight. Super small, durable, and easy to open box. No plastic shells, blister packaging or anything of the sort. Despite the lack of colors or anything super custom, the pragmatism was quite refreshing, and I feel it makes a much better first impression than something that looks nice, but requires borderline destruction of the package to liberate the thing. In all fairness though, I knew exactly what I was buying (as does the general clientele for this sort of thing), so advertising on the box is probably a bit irrelevant anyway.
Watch out for Thursday's video that I'm dropping I talk about exactly how you can still make a great presentation and also keep it sustainable. Also, I did one that uses the most sustainable materials I've ever come across here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TVhjzvVu4iw.html
This video sparked such an awesome idea for me for a rebrand I am doing. (Nothing like what you showed though but it got my gears going) Thank you for walking us through this packaging!
While I appreciate the thought behind this packaging I actually dislike fancy packaging because it just goes into the recycling. It is a gorgeous presentation. It would be nice if you could have an option for the fancier packaging or just the bubble wrap and cardboard box?
I appreciate the comment, packaging for sure can be overdone and wasteful at times. I love it most when a brand can really nail the sustainability aspect and great presentation at the same time. Did you see my video on the Reddit box we did? It goes into that a little bit... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o-rF6m0BG-0.html
@@processagresources I will check out the video! A gift box done up nicely for presentation I would do. But purchasing something for myself I jut want the bubble wrap and box. lol. xoxo
Most awesome companies start small, humble and very little startup capitol! Otherland is just a prime example of nailing it in an industry full of lots of smaller startups so the packaging stands out even more. Still so much room for everyone to innovate in their own way with packaging.
This cover looks awesome and beautiful but think how much garbage it creates just for look. One environment friendly candle and lots of hi dense paper which need to be utilized somehow. What percentage of the U.S. recycles 2020? - 32 percent. All other paper a special like this with plastic on it get burned and pollute. The recycling rate has increased from less than 7 percent in 1960 to the current rate of 32 percent in 2020. Is that worth it? Or just buy a candle without such waste of paper.
I am sucker for good packaging and this was an awesome video. I would love to see a video from you about how you would make your packaging stand out as a new small business owner with a very small budget. ❤
This video was God sent! I'm just at the point in planning my business where I'm researching packaging. What are your thoughts on paper tubes for candle companies or in general? I've seen some really well-designed ones, but I'm concerned about damages during shipping. A video on paper tubes would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! I will have to do a video on paper tube packaging sometime. Paper tubes as an outer container to slide the candle glass in can be great as you can get them in relatively low volume and the printing can be pretty versatile. Check out that category on Behance : www.behance.net/search?tracking_source=typeahead_search_direct&search=paper%20tube%20packaging for some inspo. I wouldn't be concerned with damage during shipping
I've got one of those coming up soon actually! Also, I did this one on custom liquor glass a while ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JzztchSmNYg.html
Where are you getting these box prices from. You quote these amounts that are lower with a fully customized box cheaper than I can get standard packaging from. What box maker do you recommend?
We have factories in Asia that we both are partnered in as well as other sources we have worked with for 10+ years. Would love to quote you some custom packaging --- processag.com
Your video is very good. I am a Chinese manufacturer of customized printing paper packaging products, which are similar to yours. Thank you very much for your sharing

It's pretty cool to see all the different designs and just knowing that I love candles and I'm sure someone loves just collecting them by the way they look and these are very catchy👍👍
Good point. We see a lot of different brands do 'collections' with varying designs. When someone becomes a true fan of a brand, its natural for them to want more of the collections.
50-100 units would be considered a 'prototype' level volume for something custom like this. The design strategy, artwork + building just a handful of units would be so expensive that in my opinion wouldn't be worth it. If you need to start with that low of volumes - I would suggest something stock off the shelf to test and customize it with a really good artwork and design. You could also do a custom wood box as you can get a small wood shop to custom build something cool for you at really low volumes.
I did a video on how a custom glass manufacture of bongs is using lots of skuks with custom packaging here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FySLsONBUTQ.html

Much of the packaging you see on this channel thus far is packaging we have designed and manufactured. This one in particular isn't something we designed or had made.
