In this video, I describe my experience creating two custom mouthpieces with VENNTURE MOUTHPIECES - a new player on the mouthpiece market that allows YOU to easily design, test, and create your own custom mouthpieces using their groundbreaking mouthpiece design and comparison software called VennCAD. One of the most notable things about working with Vennture is that your custom designs can start with your current mouthpiece (scanned and profiled) and then VennCAD lets you make an essentially infinite number of alterations and adjustments to it. Imagine tweaking your current mouthpiece for different purposes - orchestral, pops, lead, cornet, flugelhorn, piccolo, or anything really...
Normally, designing a custom mouthpiece based on my own equipment would be either very expensive or very time consuming - but doing this project with Vennture was neither. You owe it to yourself to check them out and see what's possible for YOU. A huge thanks to Vennture for collaborating with me on this video!

Vincent Bach and Renold Schilke would be amazed at just how far mouthpiece design and machining have evolved in the past 100 years. Just the ability to hold such tight tolerances is incredible. Jon many thanks for your great videos! 🎺👍

I hope Doug links this on his site! It's really cool to see the process from start to finish. I recently had a vintage cornet mouthpiece replicated by Vennture. It saved my playing... I've been using this mouthpiece for 17 years, and objectively, it's probably a terrible mouthpiece, but it just works really well for me! But I upgraded to a modern horn, and my original MP shank didn't fit. The Vennture copy is actually better than the original, on both my modern horn, and my vintage one (due to some tweaks, but also just surface finish).

Wow, super cool to see this! I’ve always felt similar to you - I have a really hard time playing shallower mouthpieces and have really struggled to find a good “commercial” mouthpiece. Playing a stork 2c for Bb and C (different throat/Backbore for C)... might have to look into getting something similar made 🤓

When I played Monette trumpets Dave made me a lead mouthpiece to accommodate my big lips. He did the same one for Scotty Barnhart at around the same time as we both played the same rim. It was like a 1C but with a flatter bottom and tighter backbone. The flatter bottom made it effectively shallower to help with the compression. I don't have it now as I changed instruments after my divorce! I went to smaller rims before mashing my lips in an accident so I am back on much bigger mouthpieces again. The missing link is something with more compression for when I need it.

Hey Kyle! So glad you enjoy my content. I would love to do a video on Stork at some point when I’ve had a chance to get to know them a little more... maybe I’ll try to visit them sometime. Funnily enough I’ve never visited an instrument factory for tests but I definitely plan to as soon as I can after this current mess is over! But certainly a guide for what to evaluate when selecting mouthpieces... I think I could do that. 🤓

The obvious question - what was your final cost? This video reminds me of a true story about Maynard as told by one of the musicians in Maynard's trumpet section. Maynard's trumpet, for whatever reason, was transported separately to a gig and arrived just before the gig was about to start. However, it arrived WITHOUT his mouthpiece. Upon discovering this, Maynard called out to the trumpet players asking if anyone had an extra mouthpiece. Someone tossed him a trumpet mouthpiece which was totally different from Maynard's normal one. Maynard then played the entire gig with the substitute mouthpiece and sounded just as brilliant and powerful as always with his usual incredible range. That's how it's done!

Super cool especially since I play a B 1 1/2C Rim Screwed onto a 1 1/4C Cup in a 3 inch shank that I'm dying to have reproduced. I'd love to know what the cost of the prototypes and final mouthpieces are. I have looked up the cost of a mouthpiece but it didn't mention prototypes. Thanks for any info you can share as well as the video. Also, how fast did they get your mouthpiece back to you? Thanks.

I just ordered a second hand mouthpiece with a 27.4mm rim, a 17mm cup diameter, and a 3.6mm bore. I normally play in orchestra and I'm not too experienced in mouthpiece finding. I'm looking a collosal sound. Do you think I made the right choice?

Nice videos ! Thank you. Some brands proposes raw brass mouthpiece (Donat in France for exemple). I saw taht you got raw brass mouthpieces from Vennture to make your decision. Do you think it is a sustainable choice ? Doesn't it give a bad smell/taste ?
@JonTalksTrumpet
@JonTalksTrumpet 3 года назад
Glad you enjoy them, MichaelBxl! Basically, I don't prefer to play raw brass for long stretches because my lips are sensitive to it. However, after I did my prototyping process, they have since started offering a brush plating option for the prototype parts (which is basically a very thin layer of silver) which would probably be a bit more comfortable to play on. Basically it would be inefficient to get the prototypes plated because it would cost more and take several more weeks to be ready to be tested - and the prototype parts are only really designed to be played for a short period of time to decide which shape is best. One of the cool things to me is that you get to keep the prototype parts after - probably one of the combinations will be the same as your final mouthpiece, and you could actually get that silver plated and actually use it for real.

How much did this whole project cost? And did you have to pay for the prototypes? Do you get to keep the prototypes?
@JonTalksTrumpet
@JonTalksTrumpet 2 года назад
So - each final custom one piece mouthpiece is currently $225, and each prototype brass part was I think $30 each. YES - you get to keep the prototype parts, and could easily send them out to get plated by anderson's, theta plate, etc later on. They also offer one piece 3D printed prototypes now, for $25 each.

I love the fact that someone, I don't know who is doing this work, had the passion to create a probing system and software to duplicate and modify existing mouthpiece designs. What is missing? Perspective in understanding how each change will affect the player's ability to perform. That CMM (scan) process is prone to deflection and error that will give you an inaccurate starting point. This is why real CMM systems cost $50-200k, because they are accurate. And you did not scan the finished mouthpiece on the CMM to verify accuracy? Where's the quality control in your production method? At $225 each, every new mouthpiece is just one variation of your original. To achieve the variations my average clients use regularly, you would need at least 8 of these mouthpieces at $1800? After years of making mouthpieces on manual lathes, I started making mouthpieces with a Mitutoyo CMM scan method and high end CNC lathe in 2004. Since then, I have developed a fully modular system that is far more accurate and flexible than the original. Now you can choose any rim shape+diameter, any cup shape+diameter+depth, any shape throat+diameter and the same for the backbore and body. For the price of 2 of the mouthpieces in this video, you could be playing something that is far more efficient, more accurate, and with up to 12 configurations. With all this said, I think the person behind these Vennture mouthpieces is awesome! He is at the beginning of what could be a very long journey. One that many of the best mouthpiece makers have taken, and if we're lucky, are still living, learning, and creating a better process. I was doing basically the exact same process when I made the transition from manual lathe work to CNC almost 20 years ago. Great job and I hope to meet you someday!
@vennturemouthpieces472
@vennturemouthpieces472 3 года назад
Yes, that probe is absolutely prone to error and deflection. It averages out to about .001" in diameter in the throat and the outer rim. This is MUCH MUCH worse than any Cartesian CMM. Abonimably. So why not use a CMM? Because as we all know, we gladly trade a thousandth in absolute accuracy for the ability to get 40,000 points in under a minute. Because the ability to accurately reproduce fair curves when measured with a ball-end probe is not at all about point-to-point accuracy, it's about accurately determining the tangent slope at each point and offsetting the probe appropriately. More points closer together allow for oversampling and more pinpoint-accurate curve fitting and recreation. But what about that lost thousandth in accuracy? That's why we do a hard caliper OD and pin gage throat ID measurement. Then, we can rescale to reclaim (most) of that lost thou or so. And being accurate under a thou and precise in curve recreation by massive oversampling (how long does it take a conventional CMM to gather 40,000 points?) makes our digitizations incredibly faithful. And quality control? Well of course we do QC. We also drain the nasty water out of the compressor tank, sweep the shop floor, pay our sales tax bill...but not everything we do makes the final cut of the video.
@vennturemouthpieces472
@vennturemouthpieces472 3 года назад
Oh - and you mentioned you didn't know who was doing the work, but appreciated the "passion" to create a probing system. Vennture founder Doug McVey has an undergraduate degree from Amherst College in Chemistry & Mathematics and an M.Eng. from Cornell University in Applied & Engineering Physics, and worked as an engineer at Cree designing and automating semiconductor crystal growth reactors, then spent more than a decade building KDY Automation Solutions, which designs and builds mechatronic test & measurement systems with the DoD as its biggest client. So machine design, software development, algorithm creation...it's been his whole career. Onward and upward!

Eight mouthpiece configurations you have to take apart and reassemble with modular bits is not equivalent to eight separate mouthpieces, but you know that.
