THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I dream of this hitting a million views one day. That would be incredible. Do share it of you'd be so kind. It really helps. Also, I may print and frame this comment. 🥲❤
As an old dude who could care less about the cosmetics industry (stumbled across this via a Reddit post), this was a informative video with an interesting story. Your script was great, and loved the costumes.
Hi! I have worked in beauty for 5 years. I am literally standing next to an Estée Lauder counter as I type this, and they have a gift with purchase right now. So I did some digging on re nutriv. It has some good moisturizing, and soothing ingredients. But long story short, there is a lot of hydrating ingredients, paired with ingredients that help seal in that hydration. As we age, our skin gets dry because our moisture barrier thins out. So most anti aging products focus on how do we deliver the most hydration, and how do we make it stick. Ever notice how rich a lot of anti aging creams are? That’s why. A note about animal testing. The way it was explained to us, If the brand sells in china, china reserves the right to test. It’s not a guarantee, but there is a possibility of animal testing. However this mandate has been recently updated, so yay progress! Those bunny logo “no cruelty” labels are not all bestowed by a singular watchdog organization, and are mostly bullshit. Research the bunny logo on your product to see how legit it is, because the quality of the claim varies wildly. Basically, view every claim on every beauty package as marketing. ALWAYS WATCH THE WORDING. “Skin appeared younger” “customers noticed”, pay attention to that lack of definitive statements. It’s never “skin was healthier”. To be fair, everyone is so different, that making absolute statements about a beauty product is nearly impossible, and would likely open a company up to lawsuits. Please don’t be afraid to ask the person at the beauty counter questions, that’s literally what we are paid for, we want you to be happy and confident with your purchase. Yes, we are salespeople, however selling the most expensive cream means nothing if the customer doesn’t actually like it, and ends up returning it anyway.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for sharing your insights and research! I may have to go to an Estée Lauder counter and see if they'll let me try the Re-Nutriv myself. I'm so curious! You are totally right about a lot of bs bunnies out there. Here in the US there's 2 main ones: PETA'S beauty without bunnies logo🐰--which is only for us companies-- only requires that companies take a pledge. Basically just, SAY they're cruelty-free. I mentioned the leaping bunny certification specifically because it's internationally recognized and requires companies to submit to regular surprise audits. 🐇 Thank you again for this comment. It's great to hear from a beauty industry professional! 💖
The US and European market has post market testing too, so people really going after China really seem to just be anti China, which took me a while to realize, sadly.
@@itsyissel I worked for Estée Lauder and Re-Nutriv used to be cutting edge but in the last 20 years so much more research and product development has happened. It’s nice but not hundreds of dollars nice, when K beauty brands have newer tech for a fraction of the cost
Have absolutely zero interest in the cosmetic industry but saw your video posted and decided to watch it. Super interesting, thanks for the information and effort, it's really appreciated. Love that you dive a bit into the chemistry and finer details stuff instead of just giving a shallow overview.
💄 What an epic, artistic production! As someone old enough to have purchased Ultima II makeup once, and Revlon many times, I miss its firmer glory. Maybe it will pull out of this last tailspin, and listen to customers. Thanks again!
I was listening to this while packaging stickers and my brain short circuited at you pronouncing "Argentina" perfectly, what the hell, it takes me a sec to pronounce it correctly in spanish while talking in English and I'm from here lol
@@itsyissel Well that's to be expected! My girlfriend it's learning and has amazing pronunciation, but definitely carries an accent. I do too when I speak in English. Be proud of it! You're taking the effort to speak the language and it shows
I clicked on this video super late last night knowing full well I needed to go to bed and wouldn’t be able to get very far. Well, I got absolutely sucked in and had to tear myself away and force myself to go bed around the halfway mark. I’m back now to finish the rest of it and I’ve been looking forward to it all day 😄 You did an amazing job researching, editing, filming. Everything about this video is just chef’s kiss 🤌💋
@@itsyissel Heck yeah!! Also coming back to say I am BEGGING you to do another deep dive history video like this but on L’Oréal. I stopped buying from them because (allegedly) they lied about pulling out of the Russian market during the start of the conflict with Ukraine. But since then I’ve read even more alleged shady things about them. I had no idea about their earlier years though 😳 I would love to know the whole tea on them from start to present day, especially since they own sooooo many other brands, like NYX and Urban Decay among many many others. Tl;dr if you turned this into a series I’d watch all of them 👁️👄👁️
@@gothadjacent You are the second person to request a L’oreal video! I know Bryony Claire did a series on them a few years ago, but I haven't totally ruled out doing my own take on the history
Riiiiiiight?!?! There was so much craziness that I didn't even talk about in this video!! Definitely several seasons worth of material. And thank you so much, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
@@itsyissel For those of us who worked in the cosmetics business prior to 1980, it was a world so uniquely powerful and fairly private. Tied with our lives in big retail, we honestly thought the world revolved around us. And in a way, it did. In the 80s, greed and more greed began the great unraveling of everything we once knew do to horrible mergers and takeovers. Many of the giants fell or were folded into other brands, and many beloved retailers are no more. But there are people around my age and older, who remember how it once was. Please keep telling the stories, all the wonderful stories.
First time on your channel and this video is AMAZING. Love love love! Packed with interesting info (I may have taken notes 😂) , great editing, and your personality is fun & engaging.
@@itsyissel Aw! Thanks for the reply ☺️ I’m a nail tech and was blathering all day about your video & Revlon facts at the salon yesterday 😂💖 Thanks for all the work you put into this!
Hi, older person here, Borghese is pronounced Borgaysuh. And it was fabulous ❤ OMG you worked so hard on this, I’m so impressed. I worked in cosmetics from 1990 to the 2000s and I’m a history buff too and I LOVED this. 💄💄💄💄
Thank you so much! I speak Italian and totally should have known that. I have no excuse 😅😳 One day I will get through a video without mispronouncing something, I swear. It's my personal goal ❤😆
@@itsyissel lol I never look down on mispronounced words, it just means someone had read it instead of hearing it and that’s not a bad thing! Thank you for an amazing video! Truly fascinating
@@itsyissel I worked for Merle Norman, Clinique, Estée Lauder, Chanel, and MAC back when they were cruelty free (if any brand ever has been, but that’s a whole can of worms for sure)
💄💄 I'm surprised this video didn't blow up! The costumes, the aesthetic, the research and script are all on point, and your voice is pleasant to listen to! I'll binge your other videos now
I was hoping it would but it might not be too late. I'm super appreciative of people like you that watch, enjoy and take time out to comment. It really helps. Thank you so much and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, Staci! I may have to turn this into a series myself. So many fascinating things to discover. I definitely see the appeal. I loved uncovering little known bits of history and putting the pieces together.
Revlon got out of bankruptcy. Thank god! I love this brand. ❤ This video is AMAZING! So well done. I cant imagine how long it took to make it so perfect. You deserve thousands of views. ❤
I was following a Google trail to try to find out whether another RU-vidr started releasing videos elsewhere, and Reddit, for some reason which I don't understand but which makes me really happy, wanted me to watch this video. So I did. And I will now proceed to watch everything else you've ever made and wait none too patiently for more, because you're wonderful. This is everything I didn't know I needed!
I put this video on as background while cleaning, but it's so interesting and the visuals so great I ended up sitting down and watching it on the sofa!!
I don't even wear makeup but holy shit this video is so well done !!I'm SHOCKED you don't have more subs and views. keep it up dude, your vids are so good!!!
💄💄💄💄💄💄💄💄💄💄💄💄💄Fantastic!! I love that you have revealed the awful past of L'Oreal. I was hoping you'd throw in a little light on Chanel cosmetics and why I'll never buy any of that either. GREAT job. Interesting to note. One of Estée Lauder's son contributed to a Dem's campaign for mayor of NYC and one of her sons backs the Orange one.
I heard about that! One even ran for Mayor of NYC in the 80s and lost to Giuliani! 🙀. Thank you so much for your comments Vicki. It's wonderful to hear from people who worked in the industry. The feedback I'm getting tells me I need to turn this into a series, so a L’oreal or Chanel video in the future is possible ❤
@@itsyissel OH boy!! I think you can kind of do them together. L'Oreal story is much more in depth with lots of smaller stories that eventually tie together modern policies that effect us politically and economically today. Chanel - well, she was a Nazi, so not a very involved story if you ask me. There are a lot of people who think that the Chanel the company should be completely separated from the woman whose name they use, however, I do not agree. Estée Lauder and Rubenstein loved to wear their Chanel suits, and I know for people of their generations, they wanted to assimilate and just be successful business people, and not look back (just a few years!) to what happened to our people, but... WE don't have to support these brands with our dollars. I won't. I work with a woman who won't buy any Huda beauty products because of her political rants on social, but she DOES cherish her Chanel products. It's funny, it really depends on your own personal heritage. My family is all European Jews and my employee is Persian Jewish.
Copyright is wild the word “living” in an advertisement can somehow belong to one singular brand? Then it was even concluded in a court of law the use was infringement despite both the products clearly being entirely different from one another 😮
Your content is so informative and gorgeously thought out and presented im in love 🥺 Absolutely sharing your channel among my friends because you deserve an appreciative audience for the amount of work you put into these videos ❤
As a wig girly, I first found out about Revlon while they still had a wig line as a teenager. 15 years later (I’m a millennial don’t at me) I know it also makes makeup 😂
💄what really gets me is that they discontinued their super lustrous glass shine line despite it being continuously viral on tiktok and putting them on the gen z map, they were beautiful and better than some designer lipsticks i have, they are FOOLISH. Other than that it’s an amazing video, i can only imagine the work you put into this wow! I know you didn’t propose it but a loreal deep dive would be really informative i didn’t even know about the nzi thing… anyways i can’t wait to see more of your videos!
Right?!?! The fact that I went to a Walmart, a Target, an Ulta... I think even CVS or something.... aaaand nothing. Meanwhile Clinique's been selling its black honey almost lipstick since the 70s and it too has gone viral, but not selling out anytime soon because they're smart enough to keep it in stock. I really don't get Revlon’s business decisions. They make no sense. No transparency either. A L'oreal deep dive is not out of the question, but I will say Bryony Claire did a great job of covering all their bs in a series of videos. I believe there are 3? She does her make-up while she covers a plethora of scandals, so I will direct you to her in the meantime: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Loj_p1lESBE.html
When u scrape ur veggies off ur cutting board, if you flip ur knife and use the back, it avoids dulling the sharp edge and slide over the cutting board a lot easier
oh. my. god. this is exactly the video i needed. its so well researched, amazingly executed, and funny. i am a sucker for youtube documentaries/video essays ESPECIALLY when they have entertaining skits/bits throughout. i'm a big makeup fan and also someone who MUCH prefers longform content (of which i have recently been sorely lacking) so it seems the perfect video had fallen right into my lap. i had no idea about genuinely any of this and learning about things i would otherwise never think about is one of my favorite pastimes (i also didn't know about l'oreal... anyone have good mascara recommendations for when my telescopic runs out?). genuinely, really really loved this video and i appreciate your hard work in making it. 💄
@1:18:59 Ron Perlman took over Revlon??? I knew he was a badass after watching Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy, but I had no idea he was a corporate raider as well!
