The equation from the start: 4(# of Main characters + # of main locations) x 1.5(# of Mace or mice quotients) = estimated page count. Just in case people need to see it visually.

I'm not making webcomics, but I AM making a story. Still, I think my advice would apply. If you've created characters you love but have to cut characters to make your story a more reasonable length, put those characters aside for when you start a new story. That new story can even be a sequel. That's what I plan to do with my cut characters.

Oh man, this is why I'm starting a mini gag comic while planning my much, much longer comic project. I get to play and experiment with 3-4 panel gag strips, explore the world a little in a smaller more controlled way, and it sounds fun! Getting all that awkward finding-my-comic-style process out of the way in a less intimidating manner, that's basically my goal with it. Anyway, thanks for the reality check, your vids are always very helpful!

Oof, good reality check, bringing up how many pages you can actually make in a year. Better to make that reality check early on rather than waiting until it's hard to change anything :'D Also, are the "main characters" counted in the formula literal lead characters, or does this include major supporting characters as well? I feel like it probably includes major supporting characters since these characters often have at least a bit of background as well, but I thought I'd ask anyway. :3

I just started watching you guys and your amazing!!! This video also helped me a lot because I’m looking to make my first webcomic, but feel really intimidated. You and Ursula have been helping me out so much with it, and I’m really thankful that so know that my comic will be around 80-90 pages, lol 😂

Your videos are really good, i like what you say, even though there's a lot of channels on comics and how to make them, really only a few talk as clear and concise as you guys. You hit a lot of key points and say things that I, as a comic creator just starting, needed to hear. Thanks and keep making both comics and videos :)

here's the calculations i made for my webcomic! the estimate i made pre- this video was ~60 pages. ((2(MCS) + 5 (LOCATIONS) x 4) =28 (as they said in the video, i set it aside for later) 3 (LACE quotients)(i use LACE bc they made a video on that) x 1.5 = 4.5 28 x 4.5 = 126 pages total i now have a new rough page estimate, wahoo! i do not know what this means because i have a vertical scrolling comic. but this means something to me i think

Damn, that formula was kinda scary, I already wrote out a script to my comic, and I ended up getting close to the same amount of pages I already wrote 😬😬

Holy cow. My current insanity-in-plotting will probably be somewhere between 624 and 700 pages, with one of those being based on the formula and another based on my current outline. I can live with that! Still big, but not massive. (Me @ Rouroni Kenshin's 5,600 pages... >_>) Although I've learned from putting down a few scripts that I REALLY need to lay out my pages better or else trim the fat waaay down or that number's going to get bigger. My first scripting experiment managed to hit 200 pages before I even got to the first Big Plot Thing and uuh... that ain't gonna work. I love little character moments but I can do a lot with comics that I can't do with novels and I need to Use That. At my current workflow I can make prooobably between 60 and 120 pages a year. (Which is just an estimate - I'm pretty sure that's an abysmal number by pro standards.) I suspect I'll have to streamline said workflow so I don't drive myself insane. (And also so that it doesn't take me ten years to finish the comic. O_O; I'm no stranger to long projects but that's a little much.) Thankfully I've got plenty of time to figure how to do that. :D

For my first comic i want it to be less than a 50 episodes I'll probably limit it to 5 or so characters

If I produced my ideal amount of pages it would take 5 years to finish my comic. I'm a little worried because this is my first comic but I want to commit to it.

Hmm, so a very rough estimate of 180-240... Actual estimated page count (based on the script):380-430. Just saying, it's not always accurate.

Well, if you do 3 pages a year then something's wrong. If you want to do ANY comic at all, I'd suggest figuring out a way to get at least 12 a year, with 1 a week being something to aim for if it's anything bigger. (So, yea, optimization and practice, cut out unnecessary details, focus on the important stuff...) This isn't to discourage you, BTW, I'd love to see what you have in store, but to explain that comics really need you to draw with some amount of speed and that it's generally not impossible to draw faster than a page every 4 months.
