Is a awn atill salvageable if it has been taken over by a variety of weeds over the past few years? Despite my efforts of de thatching, aerating, fertalizing, and over seeding, I can't seem to beat those damm weeds that come out during summer.

Hi @TurfMechanic, I was done with herbicide application last 3 weeks ago since I got a lot of weeds then I want to aerate, reseed, fertilize my dead lawn this month. But I noticed I had a lot of old clippings and long dead brown bermuda (especially on the edges and corners) already ingrained into the soil so planning to dethatch to remove them (might use the method in your video). I’m on right track of doing this, right? Or can I skip dethatching? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Do you have any guidance on when to do the dethatching with the rake in terms of soil or grass moisture? Should i do it when the grass is relatively dry or should i do it after a watering or when it js dewy? I get a decent amount of dew in the morning where i live for example so should i wait until the sun has hit it for a while or go at it then?

At 68 years old, I enjoy yard work. Yes, using the rate Thatcher is indeed hard and not easy on my arms. A little bit at a time and it goes fine and dandy.? Another of my money questions I have is, sometimes when I'm doing a dethatch you it also brings up dirt along with pieces of grass which somewhat look like they are alive. Am I doing something wrong when that happens? Thank you.

@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
Definitely not recommend for grass in high levels of stress if you dont want to kill or thin out what makes it through summer...however stressed lawns can be dethatched at summer's end if you are planning on a fall overseed. Get the weak stuff out and dirt exposed and grow new stuff is a viable option. I would heavily recommend however that your fall, winterizer, and spring fert plan is all about increasing turf health though because a healthy stand should be able to make it through summer the way I suggest. I don't fertilize for extreme color or stripes or fast growth, I fertilize for turf health first and foremost in my lawn. Don't be shy, ask any and all questions you want, I answer as much as I can between lawn care, video production and family life...I also have a ton of videos here that can guide you...probably most of them don't conflict with each other either 😅

@@TurfMechanic Thank you as always. I botched my transition so my winter rye was fighting for life but also fighting my emerging Bermuda. @TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 8 месяцев назад
I would go ultra low, as low as you can. It will look horrible for a couple weeks but it will give you a hard reset. It's fine to hard scalp all grass types every now and then. If you do to go that extreme then just go as low as you feel comfortable. Make sure to add a strong dose of fertilizer and water immediately after dethatching to help it recover asap.

This is one of the few times a year I recommend using a liquid urea product heavy in nitrogen just prior to a watering session. I'm using a light dose of 20-0-0 through a hose end sprayer mixed with Hydretain on my lawn right now. I'm not brand specific, so long as it's liquid urea and watered in right away it's just about perfect.
@Chicadee713
@Chicadee713 Год назад
@@TurfMechanic My grass needs a good dose of something to get it looking good, and I am wondering if the high nitrogen product would work or if something else would work better. We have been having high 90 temps with no rain, and I can't really afford to irrigate often...about every three to four days. The grass is looking rough so what would you do to help it look good again? Please be brand specific...thank you!
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
For your specific situation I would recommend buying enough Scott's Natural Lawn Food (11-2-2) to apply 9.7 lbs per 1000 sqft. This will give you just over 1lb nitrogen per 1000 and approximately 0.1lb of that nitrogen will be water soluble so a single irrigation session will get it into the ground and root system quickly. The remainder will not burn in dry soil and will slowly be used all fall. You get a bit of Phos and Potassium but not too much of either. Those will be used in tandem with the Nitrogen throughout the fall. If you are up for spending a bit more then buy a bag of straight SOP off yard Mastery or off Amazon to get a bit extra Potassium on the lawn for the fall...but a heavy dose of Scott's Naturalls will go a long way especially if you can get one good irrigation session on the lawn now.

@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
I let things compost in most of the year but usually I dethatch ocassionally once or twice a year or so because the clippings don't decompose into the soil fast enough where I live. We have dry days during the growing season so the excess clippings accumulate faster than they break down. Instead I use excess clippings in garden and compost settings which for me us more reliable and then break down true thatch with liquids throughout the year.
@djratino
@djratino Год назад
I'm guessing dethatching is unnecessary. I do lawn scalping instead. Then I use a pull-behind aerator. Works for me. 🐀🐾
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
Depends on the grass type and environment factors but you are right, many grass types and locations may not need dethatching done much or ever. I core aerate twice a year and that alone is more than most people do to their lawns. For lawns that handle scalping well that's another chore that only people with the best lawns do. In general though most lawns that spread via stolons and/or rhizomes do good with the ocassional dethatching even if it's just once every few years at a minimum.

You sure do want people to work hard! Having a lawn that size, a person wouldn't use a manual dethatcher rake, trying to dethatch a lawn that size. It can be physically exhausting and too hard on the body, even for a young person. I can't imagine anyone who's middle age or older trying to use it! A dethatcher rake (like that) is mainly used for small, sectional grass areas, not for acres of land. For a lawn as big as yours, you need a powered dethatcher, which will make the job so much easier and faster. If you even tried to dethatched your lawn with that little rake, it's going to take you a week to dethatch your entire lawn with that rake, and your entire body will be sore from head to toe. Besides, what made you buy that dethatcher rake anyway, when you know you have a huge lawn? They've got dethatcher machines available now, so why do things the hard way, when there is a much easier way to do it.
