I'm disabled now, but I loved doing yard work beforehand. I sit on the grass and use a small hand rake/fork to dethatch. I drag a container around with me to put all the thatch into, as I go across the lawn. Takes me a long time but neighbors have commented on how good it looks & how I've "opened up areas for grass to grow in."
Im looking for a way to remove dead grass without using a dethatcher cos we still dont have garden stuff and their costly, since we just bought our house and we spent a lot already. Your comment helps since I have that small rake. It would make me put on effort but at least it would work. Thanks!
I am so glad to hear someone who is not into powertools like me. There is something therapeutic and back to nature about it. No noise polution. Love composting too. That's money. Both sides of the rake looked the same to me...

Great video. You have a really clear and calm way of explaining things. I just used my neighbours electric de-thatcher but you've inspired me to do it manually next time. Cheers.
I've sticking to hand tools as well mostly because we don't have enough room in the garage for bigger tools. This vid was very helpful! it's nice exercise!
My Husband and I do most things in our yard & gardens manually, with the exception of mowing & weedwacking. Our lawn is only 9,000 sq ft, so with both of us it’s a manageable task. We are having a problem with lawn fungus, so we are going to manually dethatch with a heavy rake, aerate with a garden fork & treat with a fungicide. My Husband would love that 1st rake you demo’d…have never seen that. Great video & thx for the tips from Boston MA
Thank you. This is the best explanation I have seen yet on the use of a manual dethatching break. I have one but I have not understood what side to use for what. Thank you for helping me with that. I have a tall fescue lawn in a transition zone. Can you tell me if I can detach during the fall or at least late summer? Thank you again for your RU-vid channel.
Watched this and immediately de-thatched my lawn. Wow a LOT of green material left over. A lot of clover is in my waste, if I use that as mulch (for strawberries) do I run the risk of introducing clover to my strawberry bed?
I never had any issues with that. The only thing I would be worried about would be Bermuda grass or other running plants. But if you compost it down it shouldn't be an issue
I tried thatching with two regular rakes today, I have a bunch of blisters and I don’t think it worked as well as this specialized rake. I need to buy one or the my lawn professionally done
Hi!! We missed the early spring mark and where we are at already feels like summer (85-920°F). Would you recommend to still going thru or just wait until fall?
