I explain how the starting circuit works on a 2008 Chevy Malibu. The ignition switch will send a signal to the body control module. From there, the BCM will then send a signal to the engine control module or ECM over the high speed GMLAN serial data circuit or the "bus communication circuit". From there the engine control module will activate or power up the starter relay. When that happens, the contacts inside the starter relay will close and send power down to the starter via the purple wire.
The customer I was working with had already replaced the starter and had the battery checked. The fuses were good so he didn't know what to do next. The next step should be to check for codes and communication in both the Engine Control Module and the Body Control Module using a compatible scan tool. I recommend an Autel scanner to check for codes and communication with both the ECM and BCM. In addition you might be able to do a self test using the scan tool. It should have a bi-directional test for the starting circuit built into the scan tool that you can run sitting in the driver seat with the scanner hooked up to the data link connector.
