replace drier, compressor, flush whole system, check for leaks, charge and add acid neutralizer (always do this on a burnout). Your supply houses dont have a on call on saturday? All mine do.
Do not run "flush" through a system. You'll never get it out. Add a proper suction line drier and plan on replacing liquid line and removing suction line drier. Where adding flares helps.
I have a 5 stage infinity. I was thinking of pulling the compressor and doing an oil change for fun , its technically possible. And im seriously considering it .
You didn’t check the odor of the refrigerant or take an acid test, so how are you going to quote this job? If it was a dirty burn out, your going to have to clean up the system. It’s also advisable to replace the compressor starting components, contractor, etc. when replacing the compressor.
You really have to focus if a home warranty tech is doing the work for a customer. Not all tech's will work with home warranties but all home warranties have their own list of tech's. Also, all the homeowner pays with a warranty call is their deductible which is I believe $80 while the manufacturers warranty only pays for the bad part and supplies their version of the OEM part(s). Home warranties will typically use any part(s) that works.
Is that a heat pump, if so do you change the reversing valve as well? Compressor don't often commit suicide, most always homicide. Start that thing up with new compressor and you will find out quick. Many of those Ruud do not have factory dryer, acid test,major burn out ?
Always gotta watch your meter when you get a tone. It may not be a direct short it could have some resistance which in some cases is normal might not be a short to ground, or power.
My circuit breaker was tripping. I disconnected common and run wires of the compressor from the contactor. Measuring between the two, was .002 ohms. Way too low I think. I'm saying its a bad compressor. Do you agree? Thanks for the video. Well done!
I have an issue the compressor continuity, its give a sound between the body ac and its wiring. and can i know is it normal when two wiring (red & blue) also giving a sound buzzer?
Thanks for the great video. Is there any way to tell a compressor is bad without the outdoor unit running? Let me give some context. My AC unit was not blowing cold air and outdoor unit was making a loud noise when starting. The technician that came diagnosed the Condenser motor and capacitor as faulty and replaced both. After that when the unit was still not blowing cold air, he mentioned that compressor is not firing and then he ran some tests for the compressor and mentioned that the compressor is gone too!!. He took back the condenser motor and capacitor and made me pay for all the labour involved. Is that normal or did I get fleeced??
Great video, thanks. I wonder if our loud a/c (compressor?) noise is related to a short circuit in our wiring somehow. If you have any hunch, please let me know. I have a short somewhere on a circuit in our house that I have not located. The lights come on and off at different times. Sometimes I can reset the breaker and the lights go back on. The a/c is 20 years old and has been getting louder and louder each year. Thoughts? a/c does work fine, but outdoor unit is loud. Heating works fine too. Thank you for any comments/ideas!
You better get real curious. Who did your wiring? I immediately suspect neutral and ground connected together beyond the service entrance or backfeed. PLEASE get it checked NOW. If you work with this professionally your see a lot of mistakes.
I know this video is 6 years old but what do you guys charge to change out a bad compressor nowadays. I was told my 14 month old outdoor unit needs a new compressor already. Compressor pins plugs ohm out correctly and the tech said the compressor isn’t shorted to ground but clearly there’s a short somewhere from the load size of the contactor forward. Do compressors fail in 14 months? It’s a 5 ton heat pump/AC. It’s a Sure Comfort by Rheem.

I've had compressors delivered to job sites, and when the packaging was removed from the compressor it was found to be electrically defective. I make sure that any compressor that is picked up or delivered is checked before being installed.
Thought it was weird that a newer unit had a fused disconnect box, is that a California thing? I am in Florida and we would have installed a box with a double pole single throw breaker in it.

WHY ARE THEY PAYING FOR THE GAS LIKE YOU SAID???????? IT'S A CLOSED SYSTEM AND IT DIDN'T LOOSE FREON, SO YOU EXTRACT THEIR FREON , AND CHANGE OUT THE COMPRESSOR. ADD A LITTLE IF IT HAD A LEAK,BUT IN THIS CASE,IT'S THE COMPRESSOR. SO ALL SHE NEEDS TO PAY IS LABOR!!!! LETS GET IT RIGHT!!
