Good information on the video. But here is my problem. I have insulation coming through a vent in two bedrooms. The problem is there is no room (about 18 inches) to get to the vent through the attic. Poorly designed house I guess. How do I fix this problem? Thank you.

I think the ductless systems are the best in any situation because duct leakage and return air leakage are both serious problems. Dealing with crawl spaces and hot attacks is dreadful. The mini systems if designed into a new house during the planning can be flush mounted and where there are a few small rooms have a ducted unit to go give a little air to the closet or powder room, etc. The draining would be plumbed in during construction In high humidity climates a separate large dehumidifier with its own registers and returns would compensate for the deficiency in dehumidification from the mini splits. All that ductwork and returns is too susceptible to leaks and small leaks throw off the whole thing and then hot air is sucked in from wherever it can be, usually humid. For the enormous showplace mansions certainly a chiller would be more efficient. I just think the way things are done now are for the benefit of contractors sellling mass produced houses. It is getting hotter and major changes are going to necessarily be made. I find that running my dehumidification system non-stop and turning my AC to 85 (it almost never gets to 85) allows the whole place to cool practically instantly since there is no latent load, and the dehumidifier works best at a higher sensible temperature anyway. The whole world is changing very rapidly and the average consumer must educate himself about the humidity laws of physics and stop looking at an air conditioner as something that blows cold air.

I once knew a Melvin who used to pride himself on making non-chargeable window units rechargeable by simply cutting the lines (dumping all the freon into the air around him) and then using silfoss rings to braze a valve to the circuit before refilling. I knew nothing about EPA rules back then, and thought he was crazy just for breathing the surrounding air when he'd do it. I would stand back at least ten yards when he'd pop a unit like that, but he'd say "nah, all the gas just sinks to the ground and can't hurt you. Anyone who tells you the stuff is dangerous is full of it."

Five years on and this should be an HVAC video top 10 GOAT. I commend you for your honesty and professionalism. Years ago we were burdened with a sudden death in the family and inheritance of property I couldn't afford to maintain unless I did a lot of work myself. HVAC scam artists in Verde Valley/N. Arizona were the worst to deal with: Overquoting gas and system replacements without doing any diagnostic work; trying to sell me on painting my damn skylights to increase the home's r-value; quoting me on replacing all of my send vents with "better ones" to help zone-out the house; I gave up when one Melvin crawled my attic and ripped a duct connection from a wye, later swearing it must've been an accident, but it's hard to do and was surely an sttempt to sell me on a system replacement. I was savvy enough to catch it personally, but I'd say most people wouldn't have. The property has three buildings with Ruud Zephyr R22 systems that are still in operation after 25 years. I taught myself how to breakdown and clean the systems, from the coils to the blower. Taught myself how to test and replace electrical parts, especially the capacitors and re-do degraded connections. The unit on the building in question had a small leak on the inside coil, and once I found an HONEST old-timer who could diagnose and repair the gas circuit (while updating my filter dryer and re-wrapping the linesets with fresh insulation and such) I gave him the rest of our business and referred him to everyone we knew. Until he passed a few years ago we still had him out to check and clean the units, replace air filters, etc. We even had him over for barbecues and holidays where he got to meet MORE people who became good customers. What goes around, goes around. Also, anyone who says this video didn't age well is ridiculous. It's 2024 and R22 can still be found for about $30/lb, not to mention the replacement gases that now exist. The dishonesty of this industry has propelled me into studying so much I've ramped up to take on brazing and gas work myself now, even thinking to just formally apprentice in HVAC. Your commitment to proper tech work will propel you and your family well into the future and you shouldn't listen to anybody with an impatient and greedy mindset guide you on how to build your business. Cheers!

I do not think the Flammability is all that major of a problem but my question is about the vacuum pump "why would it have to be A2L certified ?" if the refrigerant is out of the system.

these rankings are interesting. RunTrue is a subsidiary of Trane. Heck, the RunTrue condenser even contains the famous Trane spinfine coil! Yet it's rated 3rd rate????

Yeah I’d be willing to have a new Runtru system installed in my home for some cost savings. They’re close to Trane system without some bells and whistles and fancy paint job. It’ll be fine for 15 years - the top name brands new equipment aren’t going to last much more than 15 years. I don’t want to waste my money.

Can’t really top off a 410A system if it’s running low on pressure. 410A is a blend and if you have a leak the blend of refrigerants boil off at different pressure’s . Knowing that you don’t know which of the blend is low . This means pulling all the refrigerant out and replacing it with a fresh charge of 410A . Saying that you need to locate leak or you will bring doing this all over again. New refrigerant blends are Dothan the old R22 or R12 refrigerants that you could just top off .

The cooling performance and operating cost are governed by the laws of physics, period! The only specification that is actual and scientific is EER. SEER is completely meaningless, it is nothing more than marketing nonsense. Haven't you noticed that the EER never exceeds 13 regardless of decades of "improvements". The chart you showed indicated an EER of 12.5 for a 15 SEER system. I will continue to keep my 19 year old R22 system going as it has an EER of 12 and I have the lowest utility bill in the neighborhood. How about those 20 SEER 2 stage systems - on stage 1 they deliver 50% capacity with 50% energy consumption - NO CHANGE in EER. And if the ductwork is in a hot attic the low CFM results in dramatic heat gain at the farthest vent. Interesting that is not factored into SEER, if so the SEER may dip below the EER!

I bought my house 15 years ago and I think the AC unit is as old as the house. I have tried so many things and it still isn't blowing out cold air. The other day it froze up on me. I removed the ice. I changed the AC regulator and cleaned off the AC coils and it still doesn't cool my home. I even removed the blower and wired brushed the fins and nothing. The AC unit has to be over 20 years old and so now it is time to cough up the cash and get a new one. Thank you for the video.
