In this video I'll introduce you to my new (to me) Wheel Horse 416-8. It's been around the block a few times, with over 2275 hours on the meter. I'll also demonstrate the necessary steps to diagnose why it won't crank or start. I hope you will learn something and enjoy accompanying me in getting my new toy back up and running.
Thanks for watching Buck's Small Engine DIY, Putting the "Do" into "Do-It-Yourself"

Excellent video on diagnosing an electrical issue. I have an older wheel horse and will use your technique on diagnosing my issue of no cranking. Thank you so much for your very informative video.

Nice one Buck! The oil low sensor is an innovation from well after my machines vintage, so much so that I don't even think I've got a dipstick (Unless you count the guy at the wheel) The over under on the fuses is an issue which I as well try not to engage in however when you don't have the right one it's tough not to try what you have one hand. 15 AMP blue, 20 AMP gold, 30 AMP red, is now pretty much well understood and a step up with these fuse types by comparison to the Glass body fuses I grew up with in automotive and the tiny clay body that superseded them. Easy to test them in situ with the exposed prongs in the top of the fuse either side of the rating stamped into the top. You are like me a newbie to the 8 speed tranny and I'd like to see you go through that if you hadn't already. Not disappointed at all - good diagnostic path well described and made it easily understood. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth; even if it's a Wheel Horse Gift! God only knows what's on your shirt - looks like a "Robot Wars" escapee, but the Bass Pro hat is a winner with the short shirt colour scheme!! Looking very Red Green GQ!! Americans!! Start your Engines!

Thankyou ,you helped me fix my problem. I should've checked my fuse first.

Hello Buck From Mark In Kentucky. Recently I purchased a pretty decent looking 1710 Cub Cadet that has the KT17 Series 2 engine and hydrostatic transmission in which both seems to be still strong despite the age., Like your WheelHorse tractor, My hourmeter on the tractor is showing over 2000hrs but otherwise the nice condition of the tractor far outweighs any of the other negative issues that I am up against.. The person that I purchased the tractor from told me that he had to jumpstart the tractor due to the stator not charging and that the battery would last a few days before having to be hooked up to a charger. He also informed me that he had bypassed all of the safety switches which kind of raised a red flag in that you never know what to expect with someone else’s wiring. The electric PTO was bad and had been removed the PTO so that he could use the tractor in which he gave me all the old PTO parts in which he pointed out that was why that I was getting the tractor for the lower price that he was asking or the price would have been much higher if everything was working. So after I got the tractor to my place, The tractor ran and drove really well for a few days until I noticed that the amp gauge was making a backwards jerking motion while the engine was running . The engine quit when I was moving the tractor one day and the key switch does absolutely nothing. Looks like I am going to have to do as you did chasing the wiring. I did hook up a remote starter switch and the engine cranks over fine. I noticed your video regarding your issue and watched with much interest. My wiring on the Cub is not as easy as your wiring was to get to on the WheelHorse., I also have a 682 Cub Cadet which is virtually the same tractor to compare with. Looks like more gray hairs(LOL).

I'm a multi Brand tractor hoarder as my wife would say and like yourself have a couple Cubs as well as the Wheel Horse stable and some besides. I'm very happy to say that my Cub addiction has been a result of getting a 1614LT which was sitting in the weeds at a yard sale with an 8HP tiller and Snow blower. They were covered in moss and with tires flat they looked pitiful to say the least but when I saw that the hour meter had barely 200hrs on the clock I was interested. After talking the owner down off mount "Very valuable", who'd bought a newer diesel unit with all the attachments for his acreage, and into the "well I don't want it you take it" after I pointed out to him that he'd likely have to spend hundreds if not thousands to get it all working! It was a good deal lets say. The major initial issue was keeping it running as it kept seeming to lose fuel. I pulled out the fuel solenoid and cleaned and actuated it repeatedly which seemed to free it up and the Cub although a little ticky in the valve train of the upright Briggs V-twin, however it ran strong - until it didn't. More fuel solenoid seizure issues and a second cleaning didn't seem to eliminate the problem. She sat over winter and I stewed on how much it was going to cost me and how many other expensive issues was I going to face. In the spring I started it and just let it run in the yard for a couple tanks of gas and left it running even between jobs just to see what would happen. It happened when it kept running and didn't quit after the highly touted "Cleaning" additives in modern fuel started to do their magic. I didn't do anything else and now it starts like a dream and is my daily driver when I need to get stuff done. Valves have worked in and quietened down substantially. Only other issue to deal with at the moment is that after I changed the water (I mean oil) in the transaxle there is now a leak in an axel seal which runs out onto the shop floor when that tire gets soft. Minor but so minor as to not need my attention until more pressing matters receive my time. Tractors is great diversion from life's tribulations and give so much back for so little attention. Don't give up and take the time to sniff it out before you spend any money fixing things which ain't broke. Lee

@@peckerwood6078Thanks So Much For Your Comment. My worst pet peeve with my two Cub with the KT17 engines are that it seems that both of them need ignition switches which require that the gas tank be totally removed along with the hefty metal shield just to even think about gaining access to the area down where the ignition switch is located. The wiring diagram although very available and nice to have easy access to for the Cub Cadets (682 & 1710) which are the exact same tractors other than the numbers really do nothing to prepare you for how spread out the wiring is mostly along the left frame of the tractor. And after several years of “Creative Wiring and Switch Bypasses” which makes what should be a straightforward repair a major pain to say it nicely. @SolunaGarage and @MacklandCadets are really good RU-vid channels especially with the Kohler engine Cub Cadets like my tractors have. I am not very sure about the Cubs with the Briggs & Stratton engines like yours. Personally I have never owned or looked at any of those Cubs, So I am not sure how much they differ or compare to the Cubs with the Kohler engines. The Cubs are way too big and heavy to do anything else with than fix them up and use or unfortunately scrap out. For Me Personally, I never owned any of the Wheel Horse tractors, But I have friends who absolutely swear by them. I don’t think that any of the new tractors being sold nowadays would be around or doing the things that the older tractors would do without issues. Best Regards From Kentucky.

I picked up a 312 Wheel Horse that had been sitting for over 10 years last year. I cleaned the points and carb and got it to run. Since then I have fixed everything and have a great machine that runs like new. The fuel pump is weak so I wired an electric pump that only runs in crank position and that solved fuel issue. I picked up a like new snow blower attachment yesterday ,winter is coming

Thanks for the note, Bob. I love the idea of an electric fuel pump that only runs on "crank." My 418 will crank for a long time on a cold start waiting for the fuel to reach the carburetor. Did you just connect the electric pump to the existing fuel line? Or put it on a separate line from the tank? I think the idea has a lot of merit.

Going through the same motions. Doesn’t crank. Seat switch doesn’t work Fuses fine but indicator lights on dash say PTO and clutch switches. New battery too, haven’t tried. Old battery had 12.6 volts yet load test went to bad, red zone flat line.

new battery is the clue.. they more than likely jump started the tractor with there car a bunch and ether crossed the terminals or something. good video I just bought a 312-8 and has more issues than yours but think its worth saving.

I have a 314-8 that was just running great. Previous owner just put a new starter and battery in it in April. I went out to start it and the amperage gauge is almost reading dead. No key left on. Put it on the tener and it said it was good to go but when the key is on its still saying the battery is dead. I tried another batery that worked and still no change. Any idea what this could be? You can here a slight tick when the key is on amd watch the amp dial jump a little with the tractor not running and key on.

Great video - very explanatory and thorough check of the system without and unnecessary fluff and technically well done - good camera placement and good volume. Waiting to learn more about our 416 - Yours and mine as I have one also and going to go through it over this winter. Cheers!

Seat switch, loop it back in, eliminate that problematic pain in the butt. The brake safety switch can be bad as well. Push clutch or brake in it will engage switch and wal la power.

I would get that calcium out of the tires if I were you. It’s super corrosive and will eat your wheels up. I run beet juice in my 416. Also called rim guard

Weak battery, corroded battery connections, corroded negative cable connection at tractor frame, starter solenoid beginning to fail.... Those could be a few things to check.

Thanks for the video. 4 is the series, 16 is the HP, 8 speeds - 1,2,3,reverse, high and low in any speed makes 8. Nice to see all those hours and it's not blowing smoke, I'd adjust the valves and consider myself lucky if it was me, nice find! Beet juice in the tires is better for controlling rust and less damaging if you blow a tire.

Yes, Dennis, I think the starting system on the 312 is set up pretty much the same way. Thanks for watching the video. If I had to make a guess, I'd bet your starter solenoid is the culprit....
