In this video, I will show you how to remove, diagnose, repair, and replace a car alternator. This is from a Toyota Matrix (Corolla, or Pontiac Vibe) but in general, it is very similar to all internal combustion engine cars. I will also show you the inner workings of a car alternator and how it works.

Up north we deal with terrible corrosion that makes radiator fan bolts impossible to remove without either cracking or melting the plastic tabs. The alternator pivot bushing is usually seized. You can make a screw press from a large socket, a bolt, and nut. This makes re-installation easier. Cheers!

Putting graphite on the brushes will help them last longer.

The brushes are graphite. Adding more makes no difference.

Shouldn't you at least replace the bearings in addition to the brushes?

A lot of times, replacing the bearings requires a press and a bearing remover. I think he's going for a quick fix to get her going.

@lynntatro7374: As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Just kidding! Well, you have a good point. But for this particular alternator, it doesn't have any squeaking or grinding noises either in the car or on my test bench. I don't see a need for replacing it yet. Replacing a bearing needs a video on its own. This video is 39 minutes long and it will be way too long if I also go over the bearings.
