Mulching chute safety switch issue. Machine will not run. For questions and business inquiries please use contact page on my web site www.Johnsonssmallengines.com
OMG thank you so much for the video. I knew it was something silly. I had removed the guard to clean and didn't notice. Put back the right way started right up. Thanks again 🤓
Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful, please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends to help my channel grow! It would be greatly appreciated:)
THANK YOU!!! The mulching chute safety switch isn't mentioned ANYWHERE in troubleshooting why the mower won't start. Knew it was something stupid, SO GLAD I FOUND YOUR VIDEO!!
Glad to help and your back up and running! Please give this video a like and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow! It would be greatly appreciated.
The guard gets chewed up by those wingnuts (as I see yours has) and keeps popping off eventually. I created a 3d printable clip you can fit that eliminates that. I'll upload it somewhere and post a link.
Thanks so much for the video! I was going through and testing all the wiring and had no idea that safety switch was even there. Saved me from having to take it somewhere or take it apart even more than I already had.
I have this exact mower and that safety button is covered in the manual. My husband still hasn't figured it out yet. But I read the manual and I don't tell him, lol He comes in and says, "The damn thing won't start!" I'll go, really? Then I go out and start it for him after tightening that guard up against that safety button. OH it's sooooo much fun
My hero. Thanks brother! I’m a big dummy with engines, big and small. I really appreciate your help on this. Fired right up when I took the mulch cover off and cleaned the crap out. Resecured it, snugged down the wing nuts, made sure the kill switch was engaged properly and bang. 👍
Sometimes it’s just the little things! Thank you for watching and the kind comment. Please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends to help my channel grow. It would be greatly appreciated.
Those switches are a pain everytime you run the mulching port against a fence and the switch does that I put a cable tie around mine. Stays in permanently now

Sooooo coool of your explanation......I want one of those electric meter thingys... Can u pleeeze do a tutorial on the blade and engagement fully. ...I'm kinda nervous about which handle to drop first. Does it matter which one I move first. I just got the craftsman R110 in Nov and have driven it around my yard several times to get use to it. My son showed me how to use the blade and ut went well...but I still would like to see another explanation... Thank You so much !!!!! Julia in NC,,,,
I have one of these and the parking brake no longer engages. Can you do a vid? It does brake, just when I go to put it in park, it won't engage. Thanks. Love your vids.
❤ I LOVE YOU MAN ❤YOU SAVE ME FROM GETTING YELLED AT BY MY WIFE . I just fixed that damn thing and that happened to me while doing some else's yard & she said don't use my mower in there yard . 😅
I have the same troybilt, but nothing happen when i switch to neutral to forward/reverse... It was working perfectly then i parked it in my garage, when back on it a few hours later, and cant switch?
Brad, I have the same model and brigs motor but my situation is different. My battery isnt charging but when charged it starts right up. Where the heck is the information on the web on alternator and whatever i need to check to track down why the battery isnt charging? Thanks!
If you had to charge your battery more than 4 or 5 times? the battery most likely will now not hold a charge. To check the charging system, you will need a volt meter. After you have a volt meter, go to the 7:16 time mark on this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZplTD4gQhSc.html. I show how to check the charging system on a machine. It is the same for most small lawn tractors, o turns, riders, etc. Also do not buy a cheap battery (they do not last) Buy at least a 285CCA (cold cranking amp) or higher.
Not sure how much time you saved me, I should have looked at RU-vid first! That interlock didn't show up on my schematic and I hadn't even thought of me pulling the mulching cover off for a looky-see would have anything to do with the starter... :-) Thank you!
Glad you are back up and running! Thank you for commenting. Please give this video a like and share the channel with your friends to help it grow! It would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.....that was it. Have only had my mower for a few weeks and just replaced the mulcher with the discharge shoot and the snesor was not compressed fully. Thanks so much.
I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for the kind comment. Please give this video a like and share my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for watching.
Did all of that and the cover is on and it still will not turn over. It is trying to turn over - either makes a sound of turning over, or does nothing. Starter? Battery is holding 12.98 V. I can get it to turn over by attaching a battery charger and switching it to "50 Amps Start". Shut it off 10 seconds later and nothing.
First thing is your battery is now dead. If it is the original battery I would suggest to purchase a 300CCA “cold cranking amp” battery and then the engine will crank over. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, check the oil. Remember to put the throttle into the choke position and try it again. If it still doesn’t start then you either have a fuel issue, spark issue or a compression issue and may need someone in the small engine repair to help you out. This is all I can help you with without seeing the machine. Let me know how you make out.
I had to make this video because I new it would be very helpful!! I’m glad your back up and running! Please give this video a like and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for the kind comment:)
Hi! Any advice?.. hit a rock while mowing and it shut off and will not fire. It sounds electrical, the switch by the mulch guard and seat is pressed. I noticed that the mower deck lever is looser now, and found a kill switch there too, but that is engaged too. Any help is great!
If the engine does not spin? When you turn the key to the crank position? Make sure your PTO lever ( the lever that engages your blades) is in the off position. Make sure gear lever is in neutral and emergency brake is on. If it still doesn’t crank, check fuse near the battery or somewhere there should be a fuse. I cannot diagnose anything more without seeing the machine.
Hi Pamela, I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for the kind comment. Please give this a like, subscribe and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for watching!
I had to post it, knowing that many people would save a lot of money with such a simple issue! I’m glad you figured it out before it had to go into the shop :). Thank you for the kind comment.
You just saved me 3 hours of my life. Bought one of these used and immediately took the guard off. Then tucked around on it leveling, sharpen blades…. Then it wouldn’t start
I’m glad to hear your up and running! Thank you for watching, please give this the thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends to help my channel grow:)
Just got one from a friend it probably was used to cut the lawn one time. ..this happened is what I'm guessing .his boys messed with it and never got it running so here we are ..I can make one run and shut off and charge but I want safety switches to work Incase I want to sell the machines and know it's safe for anyone to use
Your welcome, I’m glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching, please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends to help my channel grow. It would be greatly appreciated;)
Yes, it could be ignition coil. Or a bad fuel cap vent. Or a blockage from fuel to to carburetor in the fuel line. Or dirt moving around in carburetor then getting sucked into needle valve seat. 95% of the time it’s ignition coil breaking down after engine gets very hot. I would check fuel cap vent first and see how that goes before replacing coil.
Your video just saved me a whole lot of aggravation and money! That safety plug on the side guard was the main reason my mover was not starting . . . I owe you a couple of beers, Bro!
Hey Bobby, glad you back up and running! A beer is good but giving this video a thumbs up, subscribing and telling your friends about my channel would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you for the kind comment!
Glad to hear! Please give this video a big thumbs up if you’d liked it and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. That would be greatly appreciated!
I have been trying to figure out why my mower wouldn’t start after sharpening and reinstalling the blade. It has been a week. Boy was I glad I found your video. I whooped for joy (and then mowed the grass that was getting out of control). Thank you sir for all your help. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m glad you were able to figure it out and your back up and running !! Please give this video a like and share my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated!
Dude you literally just saved my ass, my tb30 rider wouldn’t start , checked battery, fuses, pressure switch under the seat tightened up mt deck lever, nothing worked. I watched your video and sure as shit it was the pressure switch on the chute, was about the call the mobile mechanic dude to come fix it. That mower I depend on for yards with a small gates , thank you
I'm glad it worked!! and thank you for the kind words. Please give this video a like and share my channel to help it grow! It would be greatly appreciated!
Did the machine stopped when you hit the rock?? If yes, check to make sure the blade engagement lever is back into the off position. If that is good then I would start with making sure the cover switch is pushed in correctly.
There are a lot of different variables why a tractor will not start as in crank. You may want to find the fuse to check it. There is a safety switch on the brake. There is a safety switch on the PTO lever. Make sure the brake is on make sure the PTO lever is in the off position. Definitely make sure that your battery is OK if there is any questions or if you have loose cables to the battery that could also be the problem. I can’t tell you how many people I have had to come into the shop with a machine and it was just a dead battery. Try using a jumper pack or jumper cables to see if that solves your problem and if it does you have a bad battery. You could also have a bad starter solenoid but most of the time when you turn the key to crank you’ll hear a small click. Not much more I can tell you over the inter-webs.Good luck
Nice! That makes me feel good you were able to figure it out with a little help. Please give this video a thumbs up and please share my RU-vid channel with everyone you know that may need some help in the future. That helps me a ton and also subscribe. My shop was just flooded last Tuesday was 3 feet of water and I will not be putting out videos in the next few weeks because I’m cleaning up the mess but I’m happy that you’re back up and running! If you know anyone that could possibly donate? Have them go to my website at www.johnsonssmallengines.com and click the picture of the flood and it will go to a GoFundMe page. Every little bit is much appreciated.
First, check to make sure your battery is charged, then make sure the PTO (Power Take Off) lever is all the way in the disengaged position. Meaning, make sure your mower deck blade engagement lever is all the way off, then make sure your brake is pushed all the way down. Obviously you should be sitting on the machine then try and start it. If that does not work, check your inline fuse located somewhere near the battery. If it still does not start then you would need to start diagnosing electrical and I cannot tell you how to do that as impossible in words or should I say I would need to write a book.
What a stupid safety feature. Thank you so much for fixing my problem I knew it was something silly. You just saved me several hours and probably 100 bucks.
