Professional pickleball player Ben Johns demonstrates how to dink with your backhand during a pickleball rally. “At this level, I like to think about applying pressure to our opponents,” says Johns in the video. “The easiest way to do that is to hit lots of volleys out of the air and half-volleys right off the ground. A volley out of the air is going to take away your opponent’s time maximally and minimize the area they can hit the ball in. A half-volley is not as aggressive as a volley, but a half volley right off the ground is really good at neutralizing your opponent’s offensive dinks with some pace or spin.”

Why don’t you just always do what you do at 0:37 ? Wouldn’t it be impossible to return that? I’m very new to the sport so please help me out here 🙏

He is simulating Doubles play. In the video, there are only 2 players on the court but you would never be at the kitchen line, dinking back and forth like that when playing Singles because a major portion of the court is wide open. As you said, it would be impossible to return a shot to the open court. A common strategy in Doubles is to dink to move your opponents apart so when the ball is high enough for a speed up you can target the open space.

@@CWK090 Thank you so much. I watched multiple pickleball videos where I guess they are using the same strategy (simulating a doubles game with one person) and I was just so confused about the benefit of that.
