This will show the procedure to disassemble a small block V8. This can also be applied to other manufacturers like Ford and Chysler, they are about the same.

A lot of people watch how to videos to critique people the fact that this man is trying to show us how to disassemble a block yet forgetting bolts and forgetting what needs to actually be taken off in order to remove things it's kind of disturbing I know damn well I never really work on V8s I just love watching people tear down or build blocks lol....

I bought my first 283 sbc to rebuild yesterday and I've never done anything like it before. The old gear head stressed I shouldnt pull that balancer off like that lol. He claimed to have learned the hard way on his first motor. Maybe it's a part that should be replaced when you rebuild anyway. Good video though helped me prepare for what's ahead. Thanks for posting.

you should use the correct puller on the balancer so you don't pull the outer ring off they make pullers that thread into the pulley bolt holes could save replacing a balancer. also you should keep the push pods in order so they wear into the same rocker arms when you reassemble

@andrewbusby5985
@andrewbusby5985 9 лет назад
I'm not 100% on this but I think that bolt may go into the water jacket that is there to cool the engine so when you take the bolt out coolant comes out and not water from it once sinking. If it did sink it would probably be hydrolocked if it was running and just full of rust if it wasn't
@jdwthebullitt7765
@jdwthebullitt7765 4 года назад
Andrew is correct. These are head bolts and the bolt into the water jackets. When you reassemble, use some sealer (different engine builder us different sealants) on the bolts to prevent seepage around the threads. Also, check out an assembly video and you will see them following a tightening sequence with torqueing these bolts. Just a note, there are little pipe plugs at the side/bottom of the block, just a above the oil pan rails. When disassembling the engine you can remove those first to drain the coolant from the block saving the splashing of it when removing the heads.

You do realize that you ruined that dampner. You're supposed to remove the dampner by the three bolts that hold the crank pulley on with a balancer/dampner puller. It comes off in one piece, not three. Never use a gear puller on a balancer/dampner.
@trudiwilson6964
@trudiwilson6964 9 лет назад
Is it a 400ci engine? Thanks
@doughull9131
@doughull9131 9 лет назад
Trudi Wilson It is likely a 350 . The 400 has 3 freeze plugs in the side of the block. The 400 is also externally balanced so the Harmonic Balancer will be ground a little differently and the Flex Plate will have weights on it. On the 400 there are also little steam holes between the cylinders in the heads and the deck of the block.

Bruce, while generally you are correct, remember, he is dealing with an old Chevy Small block. They are not very sensitive to his type of issue. You are correct when dealing with newer engine where this an result in warped head and/or block. But the old Chevy V8 (both Small and Large) can take a LOT of abuse.
