Here's a good story for you.... I bought my airbrush back in the summer of 2003. It never worked *quite* right. I played with it for a month or so trying to make it spray nice, no luck. Gave up. It's been in storage until about a month ago, when I found it by accident. I pulled it out, tried to clean it by scrubbing it with thinner... no joy. I watched this video, took the brush apart, and what do you know? Someone must have bought it, took it apart and put it back together wrong! So there you go... you fixed a problem I've had since 2003. Thanks to the original hobby store for selling me someone else's trainwreck! Wished I lived in 'Zona so I could be a patron.

Thank You once again for an awesome video. But for once I have a (valid?) comment. My first air-brush was the Iwata HP-CS and it sprayed like a dream but cleaning/stripping it was, and still is, a nightmare. Then I got a Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR-Plus 2-1. It's taken apart fingers only, has PTFE (=Teflon) seals/O-rings, a snap release needle stop/preset, two size needles+noozles, three different needle caps, two intercangeable paint-cup sizes and a tripple chromeplate protection. Most of that is extra to the Iwata at an insane cost. If you like me only plan to own 1 air-brush I highly recommend it to newcomers as the High-End air-brush that won't get you frustrated. Still use the Iwata but only for varnishes. Note: I live in EU where the Harder & Steenbeck might be easier to get your hands on. Again Awesome video!

I know this video is older, but I "acquired" my husband's old Paasche airbrush (he's had it for about 4 or 5 years) recently and the spring and "button" are designed almost identical to this. I wish I had found this video yesterday when I was taking the brush apart because SOMEONE put it away with paint dried in it. I used the schematic in the instruction booklet to take it apart and put it back together, but this is much clearer! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to watching more of your videos. I'm not a model builder, but I'd like to get into some airbrush/mixed media kind of thing.

Hi Andy, Thank you for your airbrush cleaning video. I am new to airbrush spraying as to date I have relied solely on rattlecans to supply colour for my diecast toy restoration hobby. Good tutorial Andy for those folks who are afraid to disassemble an airbrush for cleaning. I thoroughly field strip and clean my airbrushes every single time I use them. When changing colors I always flush forwards and backwards, remove the needle and tip and rinse them out then re-assemble and move on. The one tip I suggest is when disassembling is to place all parts into a small shallow container so they don't get eaten up by the carpet (concrete) monster. I have a concrete floor in my basement where my hobby bench is located and it always amazes me how far metal parts can bounce and roll on a hard floor. I've lost a few tips, end screws and trigger parts to the carpet monster and those parts can be awfully expensive to replace. Cheers to you and thanks for your great vids!!

I have never owned an airbrush but I'm looking at getting one soon for model building. I see that you clean it out with every color change, which is a great idea. Is it always necessary to do that? I used to build models as a child and into my early 20's, but it's been at least 10-12 years since I have built one, so I know it will take time to get used to an airbrush. Any suggestion on what type or brand I should buy for a beginner? Any tips would be great from anyone. Feel free to message me to talk more. Thank you all.
@chrisgriffith1573
@chrisgriffith1573 6 лет назад
I'm not Andy, but I'll give my two cents... An airbrush is like any car, some you like, some you hate. certain people like certain things in a car, others could care less about the very same things. Point is, what makes a good airbrush for some, makes very little difference to no difference for others. If I were you, I'd eat and devour everything on the internet about the three major brands first, (Itawa, Badger, Harder & Steinbeck, then work out into some of the other more obscure brands and Chinese copies, after thoroughly learning everything there is to know about the lines that the top three produce. Badger makes three very good airbrushes which cover the gamut for the hobbyist, The Sotar 20/20, the Patriot 105, and the Krome. Itawa has a similar matchup and is also very good, though priced a bit higher. Harder & Steinbeck carries a good lineup too. Some people like Itawa for the feel of the airbrushes they make, and others like the utilitarianism of the Badger design, still others want an airbrush that has a good trigger design such as that of the Harder & Steinbeck's. Besides the "feel" of the airbrush in your hand, there is how it shoots paint, and what size models are you going to be painting, are they glossy, are you delivering just solid colors, or will you be doing detailing with the airbrush? The purpose for your gun will dictate how good a job it will perform for you. If all you are doing is clear coats and flat colors, then a Patriot 105 with a 0.5 needle may be all you require. If you are doing detailed presiding and camouflage, or exhaust marks, then you may have need for a Krome or a Sotar. Point is, pick an airbrush which will match your needs in modeling. I have four guns, and I am planning to get an HVLP (mini air gun/ paint sprayer) for larger applications. Each gun in my collection has its own special range for use, and I bought them with that very purpose in mind. Not all of them are top of the line, but they are good quality guns which I can keep for a very long time, even if I upgrade to a better / more expensive one. An airbrush does require that you clean it after every use, but not all paints require a total breakdown of the gun for cleaning. Between colors, for example, all you need do is rinse cleaner through the gun and rinse out the color before going to the next color, but after a session, I always make sure to do an extra backwashing and check the needle and nozzle for paint buildup. This would not be true if you are going from a clear to a color, some paint types are incompatible with each other and need a good backwash before you go into them following another type of paint. I try to learn everything about a paint I can, such as what types of solvents are present in the paint, the makeup of the base, its thinner needed and so on.

You are the best teacher or explainer I've seen on You Tube. I want to start airbrushing and your video here is so relaxing and most of all there is no music. You explain things slowly and to the point. I am a complete newbie so I am trying to learn as much as I can. I think I will get the Iwata Revolution model.
