Videos like this are so frustrating because it advises you to ignore the bad behavior and not reward them, but I just had an incident where my cat jumped up on the countertop that she's not supposed to be on and was eating my roommate's food which is obviously a bad behavior, I'm not going to let it continue so I have to intervene and she already got her reward from eating the food so this is just nonsense..
@@awaisdon2868 Grab them and take them off the counter. If they immediately jump back up you can give em a good ole swipe of the hand. Let em know you're not messing around. Cats are territorial. They will learn what is their territory and what is yours. By disciplining them they understand that there are some things that are 100% your stuff.
I know!! Cause it's like, what good opposite action is there from getting on the counter that I can reward? If they don't get on the counter, they don't connect the treat I'd give them to not getting on the counter, they'd think I'm just giving them a treat.
You should look up positive and negative reinforcement. Because u explained it wrong lol. Hitting is actually positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is adding something to the equation, negative is taking away something.
We recently adopted a sweet male kitty, now 5 months old. I m the mommy, so delicate n helpful yet I play with him. But my husband, he is not mean to the kitty, but he plays roughly with him and I hate it and tell him so. Please help. You said they are delicate animals, know that….. he just likes to play rough n have him bite his hand like a toy. I know the kitty is just playing. But I feel it’s bad to play rough like that. Please help Thank you
You can also teach a cat No. Say it in a stern voice and reward them. If its a behavior you can say No and redirect them and reward. Most cats will catch on quickly.
What should I do cause this dude obviously never had a cat causing water damage? My cat keeps knocking his water tower making a puddle in my flat and I’m worried about the roof leaking into their flat
I feel like all this advice is a cat by cat basis. I tend to move my cat away from the dining table by carrying them and moving them away, but if she is stubborn and try to get on the table where there is food that might hurt her then I grab her by the scruff and move them away. She understands now that she’s not allowed in the dining table or kitchen counter when we are around. And to make sure she doesn’t hate me I give her a little treat about half an hour later so she doesn’t associate her bad behavior with a reward
Yeah, i just saw another video with the same message. literally had one aggressive boy, until I gave him a spanking he didnt respond. Now he enjoys positives, he sleeps in my bed, he waits for me to come home. He would have never been close to someone he didnt respect, now he will not even get agro if a stranger holds him as long as im close by. He trusts me and my being stronger. He didnt understand bc the other home the owners let an adult cat and young kids abuse him. He wasnt properly weaned, so now he is close to me and just needs a scolding. Obviously dont yell, raising your voice is ok. Literally yelling is the only thing abusive to cats, bc of their sensitive hearing and yes is study backed. Not the libshittard dont beat your feisty critter. Water can be torture too unless they are set up with other cues that it is punishmet=result of behavior. Confusing is when you dont personally attend to them first. Positive all approach is confusing af to cats, they end up spoiled and often distant. Ik from my family ones and cats owned as an adult. These people are full of shit. I even asked my vet if a pat on the butt was necessarry sometimes. He laughed "absolutely, adjust force for size and gender of the animal, dont risk it on a big dog that isnt yours" lol doctor is right.
I noticed if a cat is biting you, a good way to get them to stop and let go is to whine ow! Ow! Like kittens do when playfighting and they will stop and release....like Oops! I didn't mean that!
As soon as you said don't use negative reinforcement i clicked off because you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. So if they scratch me I just have to stay silent??? 🤡
So long story short get a dog, at least they know right from wrong. You're basically telling everybody let a cat act up as much as they want because ignoring them is just simply telling them that what they're doing is okay to do again
What nonsense. Yes don’t hit but seriously they are not royalty. Don’t do anything if they do wrong and have all these cat items all over the house. When I was a kid cats were outside finding things to do and yes some indoor time. I have a kitten now and will be well looked after but it’s on the table it will be pulled down v quickly and also stern enough basis. Enough to make it off putting. Setting up high shelves and the likes all over the house please. He will get plenty of love and well looked after. Enough
Hi I have a 2 month old kitten and a 5 month old kitten. The big cat is not giving the little 1 a break. I feel like I need 2 interven some of the time. It's not aggressive but consdent
A cat is not just gonna say why I wanna reward and if he keeps on doing the bad stuff he does and we just ignore him and don’t reward him. He’s in the keep on doing it.
Positive reinforcement is so much better for everyone. Cats and dogs don't do "wrong" but rather things we don't like. Most often, they do things we love.
If the animal already knows that you don't like something and can't respect boundaries, then it's just walking on you. Time for corrective corrective action, but you have to be fair to the animal. If you ignore it 24/7, maybe start giving it attention every day (but only when it's being good.) If you're already being good to the animal and it's just being a dick, then I'd be more inclined to be less tolerant. 🫤
I had to stop watching this because clearly you do not know what positive and negative reinforcement are. "Positive reinforcement is a process that strengthens the likelihood of a particular response by adding a stimulus after the behavior is performed. Negative reinforcement also strengthens the likelihood of a particular response, but by removing an undesirable consequence." In other words, by adding something to the equation (ie bad behaviour + a smack) you are generating a positive reinforcement. By sending the cat into a time our, you are removing the cat from the equation and generating a negative reinforcement.
yup. Shouting or grabbing it by the neck are positive reinforcements. Just ignoring a cat won't solve shit and it'll just think you're minding your own business lol. When they experience negative emotions every time they do a certain thing, they stop doing it because they know that action leads to that emotion.
Thats why you buy them scratchers, hiding spots, toys. You get them stimulated in the right way. Try catnip! Neutering/spay them. Keep their litter clean. And remember cats are super independent and have unique personalities. You gotta deal with each one in a different way. My cat is happy and doesnt mess with anything other than his toys. Every once in a while he'll tip things off the table or scratch me. ~ just cat things. But honestly if you have to spray or hurt your pet in any way, its most likely bc of you. If your pet respects you, a stern no is enough. Also, cats are vindictive af. Keep that in mind.
Thank you for the video, but I still don't know how to stop my cats from eating my contracts, shoes, carton boxes, toilet paper and knock everything down from the counter :(
@@conniestary4499 i forgot that i commented on this lol, yes i did get the cat he's 3 months old now, it's a male i called him cheese (because i believe that if he gets to choose between saving me or eating cheese then he would not even hesitate to take the cheese so yeah he's in love with cheese haha) he's the most chaotic cat i have ever seen also affectionate and calm at the same time lol
This is a pointless video for the topic at hand. This doesn’t help with actual discipline techniques. No one needs training on positive reinforcements.
Bella knows and has learned thaty saying "No!" In a certain voice means business, because she dies tend to get carried away and excited and tends to bite and scratch when the become over stimulated.I stop immediately and don't tell at her but I portray my own vibe that it is not to be treated. At that point she gets the idea but as she's gotten older( she's 2 now) she has learned more that it is hurtful.Shes very sweet otherwise and will give unexpected kisses even sometimes..
It's OK to yell at a cat I don't know where this over sensitized bullshit started seeping into people's heads, they're animals, they can handle verbal stress. Their natural habitat is nothing but stress so yelling is a low level stimulus compared to what they're designed for. I was yelled at sometimes and APPROPRIATELY physically disciplined as a kid so why would I think a cat couldn't handle the same? We're both animals designed for high stress it's natural and healthy.
@@slayridahI agree. It’s the modern day soft culture. We all say they are clever yet they don’t understand being pulled off a table 5 times in a row. Come on. They need a balanced life like us all
This video is so informative and usefull. I tried the tips to my cats and, the end I give up to discipline them because i am blinded by love to them. And now my cat discipine me to give them food on time. But I am still on love with them
@@nateskate999 I wish that worked. Mine keeps pooping and peeing everywhere but the litter box, and I've been cleaning his box every single day. He really loves doing the deed at the back door.
your rugs prolly need washing, and I mean extensive washing, because the cat has walked over it a lot of times and now it smells like her box. They're kinda limited up there lol. They connect smells and shit and draw conclusions. Similarly if you rubb their face in it and shout a little, they'll connect the rug + pee smell + angry human. Worked like a charm for me lol.
What is considered a positive behavior? For me, Id consider anything but the negative behaviors as positive. Does that mean I give the cat a treat all the time then? And if the cat is being either rewarded often (when positive) and being treated normally when it misbehaves, how will the cat know to stop doing specific actions?
literally impossible. Cats are very stupid animals tbh.. they can attack your hands and think that they are different beings and then when you come close with your face they lick you and purr.. that's why they attack the feet when you walk in the home.. you know sunrays coming in and making a little twitching movement due to wind and trees, they think that's a being.. bug or whatever.. same if you blow on a piece of paper.. they get scared and start investigating the area.. very limited animals
What I did for my kitty was to play with her near the litter box, if the cat's food bowl is near the litter box you should move it to the opposite side of the room
What if like my cat do now, im sleeping and he jumped in to my atomach . it hurts mer much. Im looking at him and hit him in the butt and in the head. 🤬 because of what He's done to me. sometimes they need to teach a lesson they will never forget so they can't do it again. my opinion thanks
don't fkn hit it on the head man are you stupid?! Do you realise how tiny their brain is and how delicate their skull is? One blow can literally give them brain damage! if anything just take a cloth and smack it behind their back or clap very loudly in it's face and it'll get scared..
@@AMS7200That's what happens in nature. You don't hurt them, you shock them just like in nature a cat swats a dog nose so the dog will leave it alone. Although in case of cat jumping up just forgive them cuz they obviously had good intentions to visit you. But say the cat jumps on your baby? A good swat with sharp NO and it will leave baby alone hopefully.
