An overgrown Boston fern can easily be divided into multiple plants. Not only will you have more ferns for your garden, they will be healthier too! Dr. Peter Gallagher explains.
Thank you for this vid I was scared to cut my ferns up never crossed my mind we all put alotta love into them to look so good don’t really wanna stab them lol . But yes once you get set up for repotting or positioning in the garden to actually do it and cut the first fern up you realise inside it’s a factory bursting to get out. I have done 2 of my 2ft wide root ones and potted as best as the net tells me . I hope they look grand for the rest of this season and spring back bigger next . I very much assume they will . Quick tip don’t cut on glass tables 😉😉
This video was perfect for me to know what to do with my overgrown fern which I had kept indoors during winters to repot it this summer. Now I can have more than two pots to care for😊 Thank you!
The upright habit of your fern looks more like a Kimberly Queen fern (I have several). Is it possible you mistakenly labeled it as a Boston fern? I don't recall seeing a Boston fern quite like that.🤔😁
Definitely didn't know you could do this. I just repotted a Kimberly fern. I wasn't even trying to divide it, just loosen it up to plant in a bigger container. It was so rootbound that it was hard not to tear up the roots, though.
I have that out back climbing my fence.....Its "IVY"....Any kind of Ivy will climb like that, but what I bought years ago was called just "climbing Ivy"...It grows pretty fast too, you may have to keep it trimmed so it don't go crazy and get out of control....Hope this helps
+Rich Davis There will always be a certain amount of root damage with this process and subsequent transplant shock. After a few weeks the plants will have lost some leaves and become a bit chlorotic. Be sure to keep the plants in shade and begin to fertilize with a mild solution of a soluble fertilizer such as Peter's, Miller's, or Miracle Grow. They should start to fill in and produce a flush of new fronds! - Peter Gallagher
