The Queen of Agapanthus at Littlewood Agapanthus Farm (Tracey) shares more of her knowledge about Agapanthus and how to care for them.
Have you got Agapanthus that have been in the ground for 10+ years? A lot of us do and that's ok but they will not be flowering as well as they could. The large overgrown or feral clumps as we like to call them will do much better if you dig them up, divide them into smaller clumps and replant them into the ground with a handful of fertiliser.
Tracey from Littlewood Agapanthus Farm has seen this over and over again, people always asking why their Agapanthus might not be flower like they used to. Well this will open your eyes as to how you can improve your Agapanthus.
We will be back every Friday with a new video, having over 200,000 Agapanthus at Littlewood Agapanthus Farm and years of experience we really do know Agapanthus. We would like to spread the news about Agapanthus and share our gorgeous property with you. Being in lock down can be a very isolating experience, you might like to join in with one of our garden walks.

Thanks lady these plants have been propogating for over 20 yrs next to my driveway and this helps me reduce the chaos without getting absolutly slimed by cutting all the leaves.

Excellent video and I especially like the over-the-shoulder camera angle you used when doing the initial dividing. It's an unusual and very helpful way to see exactly how you were doing the division. Two questions; how wide and deep would you dig the hole to replant the divided clumps of the size you wound up with, and how far apart would you plant that size of the divided plants?

Loved the video. I bought this house 20 + years ago and literally have never done a thing with my agapanthus. Now i have to. Way overgrown, and roots on top of roots just like your video. I cut my leaves back just to see what I have to deal with and to get at the plants. I am not able to use an excavator, which would be ideal and I can not just dig it out because I have no idea where the watering line is and it's grown right up to the edge of the cemented brick edging and over it. MY question is, can I just remove the upper plants that have grown on top? You would just die if you saw my area. I am determined to get it back in control and beautiful again. Thank you

When is the best time to do this?
@Plantobsessedjen
@Plantobsessedjen Год назад
In autumn and winter so that the weather will be cooler and have more rain to help them get reestablished before the summer when they’ll flower. We do this all year round here but they do better in the cooler months

My gardener just lopped off all the green leaves on our agapanthus I suppose he thought like many people cut back nile lilies. I am distraught as I dont know how long it will take for the green leaves to re grow. We are outside of Sacramento, CA and normally the leaves stay evergreen year round. Has the gardener killed them?
@MerlinMan1579

Is it wise to cut the leaves back when re-planting?
@Roddersville
@Roddersville Год назад
Yeah but what happens when the frost devastates them and there’s no green top growth - I live in the North of England and are the evergreen type and have been hit hard this winter the the frost and I was unable to put protective fleece over them this year - are they dead ? Thank you 😁
@Plantobsessedjen
@Plantobsessedjen Год назад
We don’t experience weather like this so it’s hard to tell. I do know that when we dig up our Agapanthus to divide and sell or replant, at times we will witness plants grow from left over roots from where we dug them up (these have no green top growth). That being said, your plants may regrow from the root system once the weather improves but I honestly couldn’t confirm if this will happen. Best of luck

Thank you. We live in a rental property that has a very well established agapanthus garden that is just like this. The last couple of years the flowers have been dismal. Is there a certain time of year that would be best to break it up or just when ever?
@Plantobsessedjen
@Plantobsessedjen Год назад
Better to do it in the cooler months so they aren’t trying to re establish themselves in extreme heat

I'm in 9b Rockport, Texas, my agapanthus are all dying :( I have regular irrigation with drip tubing so maybe I'm watering too much or not enough. :((((
@vickiesorenson2385

How often should agapanthus be divided ? If it’s really old like 20 years or more would you suggest just dumping them?
@Plantobsessedjen
@Plantobsessedjen Год назад
No, don’t dump them. Just dig them up. Divide them into smaller clumps of 4-5singles per clump and pop them into the ground. You can trim the leaves down a bit if they’re a bit scrappy. They’ll flower so much better the next season. I would dig them up and divide them ever few years to maintain them.
