After all the anubis and buce you've propagated, have you noticed if there was ever a difference between cutting with scissors or slicing with a blade for growth? Have you ever experienced rhizome rot with the emerged growth? Do you trim the roots for replanting?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 года назад
I’ve used nothing but sharp scissors for making my cuts. So far I have not experienced any rhizome rot. Knock on wood!!! I do typically trim roots back rather heavily before planting. Usually keeping just a few of the newest brightest white roots and cutting the rest back up to nearly the rhizomes. I do this mainly because it makes planting easier. 👍

@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 года назад
I spray twice daily, once in the morning and once before bed. I keep the temperature in the room at about 75 degrees F. Honestly the plastic tubs haven't been working out so well with the Anubias, I think the new lights are too strong so I might need to look into raising the lights or adding some kind of a shade cloth. My java fern plants which were planted in basically the same way have gone crazy doubling every couple of months! Thanks for your kind words :)

Love the series! 1. Does anubias need to convert to when you move it to submerged growth? 2. How much airflow does this set up need?
@ungodlygaming4950
@ungodlygaming4950 3 года назад
Yes. Anubias will convert when converting to aquatic. The conversion may not always include losing all of the leaves, but there is a process. The conversion is basically the same as Buce.
@AquariumPlantLab

Well said, I would agree! OP, regarding airflow I have found that it is best to have no vent holes so as to maintain as much humidity as possible. I do tend to open the tanks daily to check on them though which introduces fresh air.

How do the plants get CO2, WITH a top on the tote? Do you have any quantitative figures on growth of anubias emerged vs submerged? Number of new leaves per month for example. I would love to grow emerged faster and then submerge in my aquariums if it accelerates significantly and does not grow black beard algae....
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 года назад
Growing out of water does seem to boost growth for anubias but it isn't a crazy increase like with lots of other species. Other benefits are that you will get very healthy growth and it will be entirely free of algae. Regarding CO2, I am in and out of my tubs typically at least twice per day. This allows atmospheric CO2 to enter the tubs each time they are open. They are not 100 percent sealed either. With soil tubs, I suspect CO2 is also added naturally as the soil decomposes and releases CO2.

How humid is your tank? What is your photoperiod? Anubias are native to Borneo, which experiences high humidity and tropical conditions. Try your best to recreate that environment to get the best growing conditions. If that's not the issue, maybe reduce the photoperiod. Also check that your light is far enough from the plant to not be an issue.

You can get grow lights from amazon or eBay for a fraction of the cost that aquarium lights come at. Some grow lights are white balanced like aquarium lights to make it pretty to look at, others only use red and blue spectrum which is the only part of light plants use, so you won't waste electricity on unnecessary light 😊. Some of them are reasonably cheap, look for a 1000W equivalent in Led, I got one for £25, the equivalent fluval would have been 200 odd

@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 года назад
I use miracle grow with great results! Start with a container size that you can fill mostly with plants to begin with (with a bit of space for them to grow in). This will minimize the amount of exposed soil that may develop algae. Gradually increase your container size as your plants grow. I recommend keeping the soil pretty moist but not so wet that water is pooling at the bottom 👍

Does rhizome plants grows on soil??
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 6 месяцев назад
There are three parts to rhizome plants that serve different purposes. Leaves, rhizome, and roots. Roots can grow in soil. Leaves and rhizome cannot. The rhizome can grow and be planted along the surface of the soil/substrate but should not be buried in it as this will likely result in rot.

How often do you water them? thanks!
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 года назад
I don’t water them because the system is closed you don’t need to water after you sufficiently moisturize the soil. What I do is spray the plants twice daily with a diluted nutrient solution 👍
