You will learn:
✅ how to divide different size Bird of Paradise plants;
✅ how to use a knife to divide Bird of Paradise plant;
✅ how to prune roots and how much is OK to cut back;
✅ what is the right size pot for repotting divided Bird of Paradise stems;
✅ how to create Bird of Paradise plant arrangements with divided stems.
Read our detailed post about how to divide Bird of Paradise plants here ➡ mycityplants.c...
EXTRA TIPS:
- The best time to divide your plants is early Spring- early Summer.
- Use fresh soil for repotting.
- Divided and potted plants need to be water more frequently for the first 3 months.
- Plants require more water in dry and hot weather.
- Do not allow the soil to dry out completely.
- Check the soil often to ensure that it stays moist.
- Place plants in the brightest light spot.
- Rotate every time you water to provide an equal light exposure to all sides.
- Mist frequently for refreshment.
- Place humidifier nearby to elevate humidity levels.

I was thinking exactly the same thing as the poster below. My first video and I was truly amazed at how you explain things so succinctly and so to the point. That is as much of an art as your obvious experience with plants. This will not be my last video and am now a happy subscriber indeed from Australia. I have a 30 foot plus white flowered BOP Nicolai spanning 3 storeys high in my backyard and I need to get that back into shape. This video definitely gave me the confidence to to move forward and cut some of the lower stalks and repot them around my home. Thank you once again. :)

Thank you alot! I recently recieved 2 birds in a pot. Both over 2 meters, so they are huge! But sadly both stems have grown in an angle over the years. I will need to separate them and repot then so they will stand straight. But I was really afraid of cutting the roots. Thank you for giving me the confidance to do so :)

Excellent information, I have several giants in my "jungle" next to my carport, I only remember planting one large container but it probably had multiple stems because now I have maybe half a dozen approaching fifteen feet or so, do I need to "cull the herd" so to speak, or just let them continue growing, they really seem to like watering

Thank you Julia, for the very informative video. I live in San Antonio, TX where we have lots of sun but it is quite dry. I just split three BoP plants into dedicated planters, while trying to preserve root systems as much as possible. I have screens on windows and plants start darkening, leaves damaging and curling very quick. May/should I put the plants outside under the direct sun light while we have temperature below 50-80F? Thank you,

Hi! Thank you for watching! Plant go trough some shock after being divided and repotted. So some leaf issues are common. Yes, you can move plants outside but do not place them under direct sunlight. May your plants stabilize and thrive!

Love your videos! If all of the stems on my bird of paradise had to be cut off should I also cut the entire stalk back to the ground?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 10 месяцев назад
Hi! Thank you for watching! If all the stems removed, you may cut back your Bird Of Paradise plant: - Use sharp, clean pruning shears amzn.to/3M1lJWg to make a clean cut and avoid damaging the plant. - Clean the tool by spraying it with rubbing alcohol - Prune your bird of paradise during early spring or fall - Cut the plant' main stem back 5"-6" above the ground - Fertilize your bird of paradise to provide nutrients for new growth. My favorite plant food that can be used any time of the year mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer _ Provide your plant with plenty of light (partial sun exposure) - Establish a proper watering frequency and make sure the pot has drainage. My must have tool is Soil Moisture meter amzn.to/3FezoFH. Here is the video about how to use this tool: bit.ly/3TI2sMb Water your Bird Of Paradise plant when the meter reading is down to zone 4-5 Green Cheers & May your plant grow happy and healthy!

I’m so happy I’ve found your channel! I love BOP and large tropical plants - I have question I know you recommend the Lechuza self watering containers but the are pretty expensive when you have a lot of plants - can you suggest another way to get the proper drainage without having to remove the pot out?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 года назад
Hi! When you say "without removing the pot", do you mean keep the plant in its original nursery pot? Nursery pots have drainage holes. If you are keeping the plant in its nursery pot and place it in a cachepot, make sure it is not seating in a pool of water after watering. Best to take it out of a cachepot, water, drain and then put it back. *** Rather sooner than later the plant needs to be repotted and any pot with a drainage hole will work. Green Luck and thank you for watching! 🌱

Hi Juliette! Thanks for your very informative video :) I just bought a BoP that's really tall and has 2 plants in the pot. It's spring here in tropical Australia so I want to split it into 2 outdoor plants. Once they're in the ground, can I keep splitting off any new plants in future? I'd prefer to have several smaller ones rather than letting them get too tall/wide. Presumably I can do it with a really sharp spade if I'm careful?

I love all your videos. Sooooo helpful. We have a HUGE BOP. It’s like 10 feet by 10 feet and it’s containerized in our apartment. We got a huge new pot for it but I stupidly didn’t realize the opening of the larger pot was actually SMALLER than the previous pot. We had to shave sooooo many of the roots - several inches on each side. The plant definitely had a little shock. I’m hoping it’ll bounce back soon but I am worrried! We had two leaves unfurl but new new growths.

Thanks for your video. Very useful. May I know if my leaves keep curled after repotting what can I do about it? I have already watered them sufficiently
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 2 года назад
Hi Michael, Repotting can be stressful and leaf curling might be the result of it. Under or over watering, improper lighting may result in leaf curling as well. I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc . This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready for a drink to avoid over or under watering. Test the soil once every 7 days. Bird Of Paradise plants should be watered when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone. Put your plant in a bright light area. Best with partial sun exposure of filtered sunlight. Provide a good air circulation. If it is nice and warm in your location, keep windows open or have a fan on. Watch my video about basic needs and care of this plant here: bit.ly/3L6Z2Oa May your plant recover and grow happy! 🌱

Hi, from Lincolnshire England. I have a new Bird of paradise plant. The plant has roots coming out the bottom of the pot. I was told that this helps the plant to flower. Should I delay repotting till it f!owners?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 4 месяца назад
Hi! Thank you for watching! The Bird of Paradise plant is often reluctant to bloom indoors because it requires specific environmental conditions to thrive. They need plenty of sunlight, high humidity, and well-draining soil to produce their iconic blooms. Plants may take several years to mature before it starts flowering. Unfortunately, it can be challenging or even impossible to replicate the plant's natural habitat indoors, which can result in a reluctance to bloom. If you have strelitzia reginae - I believe it blooms April to June in your part of the world. If no flowers are produced for you during this period and the roots are poking out, you can repot your Bird of Paradise plant. Cho0se a pot about 5" larger for repotting. These plants grow roots pretty fast. Here in NYC we mostly carry strelitzia nicolai and I have never seen these plants flower in NYC. :) Green Cheers!

Thank you! I just got a few birds of paradise plants for the first time and I'm loving your videos! Question-- I bought a planter that has about 8 different birds of paradise plants in the same planter, it's about 10 years old. I unpotted them to try to separate them but the roots are all completely wrapped around each other. It weighs about 200 lbs. It's beautiful but would like to separate a few so they can have more space to grow bigger. If I cut through a bunch of roots I am so scared to kill it! Have you split any very big ones that have any issues after cutting through the giant roots? I'm so worried about killing her!

Hi Sandy, Make sure your Bird of Paradise plant: - gets a good amount of light - if you have not fertilize it yet, do it from now till end of September ** How and When To Fertilize plants video: bit.ly/3teZEaw - check your watering routine. Make sure the plant is not over or under-watered. Soil should be dry approx. half way through before your plant gets watered. * I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc Bird of Paradise plants should be watered when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone - make sure the pot is not too small or too big for your plant. The root system should have about 3-5 inches of soil around it. - check the roots. Take the plant out of the pot and examine the roots. Any dark, mushy roots should be removed. If you have lots of bad roots, after trimming those, repot the plant in a fresh soil ** make sure the pot has drainage and your plant is not sitting in water after watering. *** You can find more videos about these plants in our Bird of Paradise Playlist: bit.ly/3h6j1OQ Green Luck, and hope your plants will get stronger and thrives! 🌱

@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Год назад
Hi Anne-Sophie, The Bird Of Paradise grows new leaves from the center of the stem, between the leaves. As it grows new leaves, the plant gets to be not only taller but wider as well. If the plant gets too tall, you may cut back the tallest leaves to keep it at the desired height. Here is the video about how to prune Bird Of Paradise: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZzC3mCYahts.html If you want to have a fuller arrangement, you may pot a few stems together. Hi Fatema, One stem can not be divided as it grows from one root "bulb". You may prune roots back (no ore than 20%) to keep it in its 12"pot longer. Green Luck, and than you for watching 🌱

Hi! -Yes, more frequent watering is required for the first month or so. Make sure to use enough water to reach the lower soil levels. ***Best to get Soil Moisture Meter so you can establish a proper watering frequency: mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-plant-tools/products/soil-moisture-meter First month or so water divided stems when the meter reading is in the 5-6 zone, then when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone. -Put the plant is in a bright light area. Does not have to be under direct sun. *** A few hours of early morning sun will be very beneficial. -Leaves that will not recover, can be removed. Here is how: bit.ly/30JifQZ GREEN LUCK!

Hello!! great video but I need further help. we have many giant BOP plants in large terra cotta vases. every spring, they crack the vases so we need to buy new! We have decided to try and get ahead by dividing each spring. In your video all the plants are more or less separated already in the vase. our situation is that each “mother” has 2,3 even four babies that are growing directly from the mothers stem. and in cutting them away they do not have any roots or rhyzomes of their own as they are growing directly from the mom’s stem. so we now have a bucket full of babies without any roots! Is there any hope for their survival? we have no choice but to remove them and thin the plant as they have already broken a costly ceramic vase. is there any way to speed up root growth of these babies with some action in the fall that would result in adequate roots by springtime in order to divide safely? any help appreciated here!!
