How To: DIY Squat Rack & Bench Press Rack for $50

With so many gyms closed, I thought it would be helpful to show you how to make the most budget-friendly squat rack ever. This is a squat rack and bench press rack that can be made for less than $50 all in and although it's not the most stable or feature-filled, you can get plenty strong using it.
I would not suggest benching out of it without a spotter or using some sort of spotting system.

As stated in the video, would prefer people buy a squat rack for safety purposes. However, I know of multiple people that have lifted on this type of squat stand for years without any issues. Learn how to safely dump the bar off your back and don't bench without a spotter.
@iloqin
@iloqin 4 года назад
@@48Boxer This, use the Buffdudes one with wood and metal pipes. It's a full 4 post rack and can't kill yourself if the spotters are in the right spots... Back dump offs for squats and ab roll ups for failed heavy weights on bench are the best methods I've seen on failing reps without spotting.

If you were to buy one specialty bar that is most versatile what would you recommend?
@bmstylee
@bmstylee 4 года назад
@@iloqin yeah. But trying to dump a low bar squat is a recipe for disaster. If you don't get out fast enough you get a loaded bar smashing your lower back. So that super cheap Home Depot squat rack just cost you a grand in medical bills, potential lost wages, and bodily harm.

Nice vid. I’ve seen the basic idea a few times. Two ways to improve stability and durability. 1. Leave a couple screws or screw a board to the posts to give the gove the concrete something to “bite” into. 2. If you bolt the buckets to a sheet of ply and use it as a platform, the buckets will be far more stable and less likely to tip. Good video. Stay gold.

I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the ru-vid.comUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B

I made this exact build with some features I got from DIY Dukes wooden half rack. I used one piece of 4x4 treated hardwood, 76 inches long. Drilled inch wide holes at various heights and used screw-on plumbing pipe as the adjustable J-hook. Drilled a hole in the bottom of the 4x4 and another one at the centre of the bucket, and used a long screw to attach the bucket to the wood (to keep it upright and level while the concrete sets). Used double the amount of concrete shown in this video, and once cured, attached a piece of 12 inch long timber to the back of the 4x4 to act as a spacer, which I then screwed the other end of the spacer onto one of the horizontal beams in my backyard fence. I now have a really strong half rack which doesn’t shake and can hold more than 500 pounds. Great video and thanks for the ideas!

Thanks Coop! I've been trying to figure out how to train outdoors once the weather gets a little nicer. This seems like a perfect solution. Could easily stash it behind the shed where it won't be an eyesore. I'm thinking some pegs on the back of the tall uprights might be good for mounting another 2x4 crossmember. Add some stability but still be able to disassemble and easily store. And of course, paint the whole thing black. Stay well and strong!

As someone with contracting experience... theres a lot of little things I would do to improve... like drill holes in the wood to make the concrete grab it better. Add a X brace to connect them... that's a biggie. But definitely a good idea. I might make some to throw outside. Would love to squat in the back yard on nice days "tanning and squats". Just never have because it's not worth buying a $300 rack. But this is definitely worth it. Plus if it falls.... won't hurt the lawn. But really need a better way of having the concrete grip the wood.

Great and useful video. What makes this unsafe is the rocking, that’s easily resolved by adding bracing prod trueing from the back (enough to give plate clearance from the wall) and then pushing the setup against the wall. This way when you put the barbell back from benching or squatting, you won’t have the toppling/shake effect. You maybe need 1 more length of wood for this so it’s an easy and cheap fix
