Love this exercise. It removes one of the biggest obstacles for me, which is always wanting to make a "good" or "finished" drawing - you simply don't have time, and so it's more obviously a practice drawing. I find that eases the pressure. Of course, short time limits can initially feel stressful until you realise what they are for; learning simplification, learning to see the essence of the pose, and just joyful, expressive drawing. :)

"Just keep it going" helped me a lot, thank you: I did 8 and only the last three I like to look at now. Thanks again, I watch so many drawing videos and your way of teaching is by far the best for me.

Ah wonderful, this is great to hear, thank you for this comment. Yeah the main thing with gesture drawing is to not get too hung up on how it's turning out, and to just move on and keep the drawing going, that way you begin to tune into the process and feel the connection to your subject more. And, I'm sure that all 8 of your drawings are worthy of being looked at! Always something to learn from your drawing even the not-so-successful ones :) Thanks again for this lovely comment, and for watching! :)

Your videos are always so helpful, and I always come back to your channel when I'm getting frustrated with or overthinking gesture. I just love how you explain things, and your whole approach is very helpful to this chronic perfectionist!

Ah thank you so much! That's wonderful feedback, so glad it helps. Hopefully exploring gesture can provide you with a "perfect" balance to your more careful and detailed work! I think of it as all feeding into your art, and both perfection and responsive drawing are sides of the same coin, in a way.

Would love to see more videos on mark making. I'm so bound to the reference, and struggle with making those flowing, swirly lines.

This is terrific. Gestural drawing to start with is a brilliant idea, now I will challenge myself with this technique in compressed charcoal and willow. Thankyou.

Great to hear this John. It definitely works best when drawing from life, but as a practice to loosen up and get more expressive it's an important exercise to work with regularly. Let me know how you get on! :)

Hi, hope all is well. Very nice drawings, once again and great tips. I like the fact you use the side of the charcoal. It gives a "gliding" feel to your drawing. Are those the Jakar compressed charcoals (8x1x1 cm) you mentionned in another video? Thanks foe the video.

Hi, great video again. One question I often wonder in these: are you broad dark marks following the values (shadows) of the model? Or just drawing the ”content”?
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 5 месяцев назад
Hi @GreenlifeFin ! Thank you or all your wonderful comments, I can't tell you how much it means to receive these, because this is exactly why i wanted to make content like this. I will try over the coming days to answer your previous questions, but to be brief here in answer to this one (great question btw).... all of these marks in a short gesture drawing are "responses" that's a crucial aspect to know. They may or may not follow the values but certainly the intention to is draw in a way that matches or responds to the gesture of the pose. When folks dismiss that approach as too abstract, it means that they then "try to draw the outlines" or the shadow shapes and this results in a poor gesture drawing and a drawing that looks cartoony. So, to sum up, follow the shape and values that you see, but don't necessarily try to control the outcome accordingly. Hope this makes sense - remember gesture is all about practice, it's not a once off.

@@Drawing-Life Wow, great answer, thanks! I might understand what you mean… I think intuition has much to do with this, and spontaneous response. Like the right side of brain thing, perhaps. Maybe you can make a video some day about this ”response” (if you did not already). I tried to draw yesterday like you did in one video… gesture drawing with a charcoal pencil in 1 minute. Omg, what a disaster 😁. So: practice it is! This is about learning to see, observe. And put that on the paper. And patience, repeating. I really admire your skills and I am sure they did not come from nowhere. I just need to remind me not to give up, when hitting some kind of beginner’s plateau…
@Drawing-Life

It's also really important to realize that much of what is involved with gesture drawing in particular (and drawing the figure in general) has to be explored in life drawing - ie, drawing the model in real life, in a life drawing session or class. If you can get to one in your area, it will become the foundation for your drawing and art practice. Drawing from a photo will just not give the same level of understanding, when you are a beginner. So, I hope you can!! If not,, I highly recommend drawing ANYTHING around you from life, with the approach in these videos - plants, trees, pets, people in cafes .... make it a regular thing if you can. 😊❤ @@GreenlifeFin
