After we changed the spark plugs, ignition coils, air filter, oil, oil filter and fuel filter, the engine light and error code P0420 (the catalytic converter is not working optimally) have not come up again on the dashboard. Still have driven about 40 to 50 miles but the error code should show up soon. While we wait, we can do a compression test on the engine. This is a regular Volvo V70 2.4 liter engine and has 140 hp and is model year 2006. The cylinders in a V70 without a turbo should have a compression between 13 to 15 bar. Now we have to think that the engine is close to 20 years old and has traveled almost 34,000 miles, so we can count on the test not really showing full compression.
In this video, you will receive instructions on what to do before doing a compression test. In the video, I also cover which fuse or relay you should remove before starting the test. You must have the engine at working temperature and that when the engine is running, you must also have the gas pedal depressed. There are many who also choose to loosen all the cylinders' spark plugs, but in this video I take one cylinder at a time.
The result of the compression test was not as good as we had hoped. The compression is at 1 bar below specification and wondering if this could cause the error code P0420 to light up. Please write a comment what you think. That we only get 12 bar on each cylinder, could this cause the check engine light to come on and the error code for the catalytic converter to be generated?. If you want more information and tips on how to do a compression test, you can find it at this link on the forum.

If you have a Volvo with a turbo, I made a video earlier on this. You can find the video here that shows how to do a comp test on a Volvo with a turbo.
