Ever found a fabric in your stash and can't remember what it's made from? Well, there is a way of figuring out which fibres make up these mysterious fabrics and textiles... by burning them and seeing (and smelling) the results! This video shows you how :)
This is our video from The Sewing Weekender organised by The Fold Line and Charlotte Emma Patterns.

Really like the fact you have loads of natural fibers and also that you actually have plenty of environmental friendly fabrics.

Ideal location: bathroom sink! Fireproof location (usually), water on tap, easy clean.

At home, I tried to burn cotton (from two old t-shirts from different brands) and linen (from three trousers from different brands). Everything burnt in the same way, with the same smell, but the ashes are different: the two cotton fabrics give gray hashes. Two of the linen fabrics give black hashes. One linen fabric gave gray hashes. I'm confused.

A lot of them seem to burn the same. I can't see what the difference would be between cotton, linen and viscose. Do you have any way to differentiate these, apart from the feel/look of the fabric?

What about hemp fabric? How can I tell say if it's hemp or a blend of cotton and hemp? How about bamboo fiber? I'm into eco fabrics.

So bamboo is a type of viscose so that'll be the same as the viscose burn test. With hemp it does burn similar to cotton but the smell is more like linen, more like burnt wood than paper, and unlike cotton there is no afterglow. hope this helps 🙂

Actually, you meant to say that the nylon self extinguishes, not self ignites (YIKES!).
