Textile Fibers Burning Test

The burning test is a simple way to identify fibers. With this test, you can easily distinguish natural fibers from artifical, cellulosic (plant - cotton, flax, hemp etc.) from protein (animal - wool, cashmere, silk) fibers.
If you plan doing burning tests, do not forget your safety measures!

Great video, and extremely educational. I wished that I would have seen this before having a suite made for me in Thailand. They claimed that it was 100% Cashmere and after it was definitely Polyester. I had the place tare off a sample of the fabric so I can test it myself. I totally got Ripped off!! Thanks again for sharing.

Especially the acrylic that just lit up like crazy. All those cheap but fancy dresses now we know just one spark and "phoom" no more hair for you. Definitely makes me want to invest in some silk clothing, it self extinguished here.

Me too. But I’m still quite confused because cotton and silk have the same burn qualities. I suppose this is going to take quite a few more videos and different views in order to know what in the world I have inherited so I can care for it properly after I’ve create things with it. The burns in this video are great, but quite short. So I’m off to watch and learn some more. I hope you’ve figured all of your yarns out. My best to you!

Thank you for this! Our thesis needs a seal and I use a thread for that however I need it to be heat resistant because it is placed into car exhaust pipes.

According to your burn test cotton and rayon have the same characteristics when performing a burn test. Are there any indicators that separate the two?

Jack Styer Okay. Because I cut a short piece of thread from a knit cap I had and it burned away. The length was the same as these in the video. That means I had either a cotton or wool hat and is of no threat, right?

Asbestos does not burn. Quite a few materials look like asbestos but are not. Asbestos glows, easy to recognise.

Grace, Some of the combustion products of synthetic materials can be toxic. Burn tests should be done in a well ventilated area (outside) or in a fume hood.
