In this video, I show you how to do a Hand Rubbed Sunburst for a guitar or ukulele.
Part 1 is me bursting the BODY.
Part 2 I do the burst the neck with the same 3 dyes.
Please Like, Subscribe & comment if to help my channel grow so I can bring you wore interesting videos :)
Note- Stew Mac rebrand the Transtint dyes- they are exactly the same product. Two main burst colours have different names but I list both names. (I called Transtint to check all this).
Colortone Liquid stains used are:
1- Tobacco Brown (Perimeter color)
StewMac product number # 5034 - stewmac.sjv.io/2r6yMM
(Transtint name is Mission Brown.)
2- Medium Brown (For blending the other two main tones).
StewMac product number # 5033- stewmac.sjv.io/2r6yMM
3- Vintage Amber (Center color).-
StewMac product number # 5030 - stewmac.sjv.io/2r6yMM
(TransTint name is "Honey Amber")
**Useful Additional colors **
4- Red Mahogany
(The transition color (instead of medium brown), for a more red burst)
StewMac product number # 5032- stewmac.sjv.io/2r6yMM
5- Black
Great color to have for giving a burst an extra dark edge (Mix a small amount of black in with the usual tobacco brown mix, in a separate container)
StewMac product number # 5040- stewmac.sjv.io/2r6yMM
Diluted (sometimes) with Denatured alcohol but water can also be used with these dyes. Water raises the grain more/faster so if you are going to use water, wipe all surfaces with clean water, let dry, then sand of the raised grain...you will have to do that at least 2-3 times.
I use a separate piece of old cotton
T shirt for each color.
Wear gloves and a respirator.
1- I grain fill everything ***first** (the grain fill must be as dark as your darkest dye color).
2- Sand it all flat to 220,
3- Then add the burst colors.
4- If you're spraying nitro, you MUST spray a few dry dust coats to seal this colour otherwise it will separate/mottle a bit (and also bleed onto any white purflings you may have) a bit and you have to start again.- So DRY coats to seal, then wet spray.
Body wood is Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) grain filled with Cardinal grain filler and finish sanded to 220. After rubbing the burst, spray a dry coat of sealer to minimize the possibility of the color running, then spray a wet coat, let dry then proceed with your normal spraying schedule- don't sand through during cut back or its back to square one = :(

You mentioned in the description about the grain filler needing to be as dark as the darkest colour. Does the same apply if I were to do this on a maple drop top or is this only for darker woods?
@BeauHannamGuitars
@BeauHannamGuitars 2 года назад
You usually don’t have to pore fill maple. If I was bursting maple, I’d either rub a dark paste into the edges and natural colour in the center. Another way would be to sand the maple with P400 grit leaving tre dust in the pores, then wipe shellac over it all to fill the shallow pores. Let dry and sand the surface back to wood. Either of those ways would work with a sprayed burst. For a hand rubbed burst I’d use the dark paste on the edges. You don’t want light pore filler under a dark color.
@beak85
@beak85 6 лет назад
Could I do this if I'm French polishing? Or would the alcohol in the shellac over the color cause running/bleeding issues? For that matter, would the alcohol in the dyes cause problems with the shellac from the pore filler? My thoughts were to grain fill with shellac/pumice, sand it back leaving the pores filled, do the burst, then french polish over it. If not is there a better way to do the hand rubbed burst with French polishing?
@BeauHannamGuitars
@BeauHannamGuitars 6 лет назад
Do tests first like always. I've not done a French polish over a hand rubbed stain but i would use water with/to dilute the dyes to minimise bleeding. Also, you could spray on the first few layers of shellac , then french polish (rub) proper. I would stay away from traditional pore filling with pumice- life is too short.

I have an Adirondack top, I want to apply by hand every coat start to finish. So if I plan on going from black to yellow burst, I should use black pore filler across the entire top? or tint the pore filler by hand according to my intended blend fade pattern? then apply sealer and shellac burst coats and then nitro?
@BeauHannamGuitars
@BeauHannamGuitars 2 года назад
You don’t pore fill a spruce top. If it was a hardwood top (which has pores to fill) then match the pore fill according to 1- the darkest colour of the wood,and 2- the darkest part of the burst. So on a mahogany back/top use rosewood/black pore fill on the edges and you could use mahogany colour pore filler for the center. It’s better to have a darker pore filler then a lighter one just in case. Also- I’d suggest spraying a burst on spruce- even the best hand rubbed bursts on spruce look blotchy and bad to me. Hand rubbed is only beneficial on figures woods.

If you are using light colored wood purfling do you have to mask it off first or seal it somehow so that stain doesn't color it?

Yep- i usually seal it with thin CA glue with 1001 Q-tips.

Are you mixing the dye with denatured alcohol ? I am going to attempt to do something like that. With color tone dye. It’s says to mix with water. Also what is the ratio of mix. Thanks for the info
@BeauHannamGuitars
@BeauHannamGuitars 4 года назад
The concentrated dyes can be mixed with either water or alcohol- I don't know the ratio- sometimes it's straight out of the bottle, sometimes i dip the rag in water or alcohol first. ALSO- Using alcohol doesn't raise the grain as much and dries quicker- Using water raises the grain and takes longer to dry.

You can't dye the wood if you seal it first. I grain fill first, then sand it all back to 220. then colour. These colours can be mixed with either water or alcohol. I've used both with the same results.

So if I have an acoustic that presumably has sealer applied can I lightly sand the top layer off to get the wood to accept stain? Or does the sealer penetrate too deep into the wood to get out usually?

Im in the process of customising my acoustic. I’ve sanded it down but i can’t tell if I’ve hit the wood layer yet. What’s indication of that? Like how can i tell? Also im looking to do a slightly darker sunburst, pretty much the same as the Taylor 524ce, what colour dyes do you recommend to replicate that look if you know? @BeauHannamGuitars
@BeauHannamGuitars 3 года назад
@@cubancucumber in the case of a spruce top- don't hand rub burst it- Seal it, spray a clear coat, level the clear coat, then spray medium brown in light passes until you get the mahogany look (like that Taylor). Then tobacco brown around the edge to darken it. You could also spray the dark outer first, then the medium brown. Check out my "Cello Guitar" sound sample- thats what i did for that guitar to match a cello colour. Also, if your top is natural spruce, id say dont sand through to wood as its already sealed- but you would have to take most of it off so the finish isn't too thick
