How to Do a Motorcycle Track Day
www.revzilla.c...
Whether you are a seasoned rider, or a fresh-to-the-track newbie, taking your motorcycle to a track day event is no small undertaking, or investment. With limited time on the race track and a lot to take into consideration, preparing for your trip is going to be as important as the skills you showcase through the turns themselves. Spurgeon, Alessandra, and Lance (the Managing Editor of Common Tread) team up to provide you a look at a list of things to do in order to make the most out of your time in the saddle.

A cruiser rider put onto a sport bike she's never really ridden then pushed out onto a track in front of everybody there and 10 cameras for the whole of RU-vid to see. I'd be worried too haha!

Really great content and editing! I think this was the best first track day video I have watched. It was helpful to see the whole process, from gear selection and loading the bikes all the way through to loading up to head home, and it was also great to see the day from the perspective of two riders and different levels of experience. Revzilla's videos have really been moving up the ladder of story telling. Good stuff!

This is the best and most complete "first track day" video I've seen. This is exactly how it happens, and people really are super friendly at the track. My first track day I was nervous about tech inspection and that all the riders would be intimidating, but there is a huge mix of riders and everyone bands together quickly, espcially if its your first time.

Excellent video for all track riders, very accurate and detailed. For slower riders remember it’s your day to enjoy yourself, don’t worry to much about faster riders as long as you’re have fun that’s the main thing. I still remember my first track day, my local track is Phillip island Australia and it was an absolute honour to ride on an international circuit.

If you safety wire your bike be prepared to fix it or to eat the drop in value when you plan to sell. If I am buying a bike, you can say "track day" all you want but I see a bike that has been raced. BTW track days are the best skill enhancement you can do with your bike. You get the chance to push your bike to the limit without worrying about running off a cliff or smacking a semi.

Was so cool watching this video at a track I've been to several times already lol! I love NJMP! But I just want to thank Spurg, Alessandra and Lance for this video! I now have a GREAT video to share with my buddies who CONSTANTLY ask me about the track! A lot of great material covered in this video! Watching me and my friends go through our first days was definitely an intimidating experience at first, but once you go through it, it very quickly becomes one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in your riding career! Not only does it improve your riding by 300% but once you live it, you realize that the track is not necessarily the intimidating competitive atmosphere you initially thought it to be; but a playground for you to really learn and improve and become a better rider. Once you start to focus on yourself and not the other riders, you quickly start to see yourself improve more more, that when you implement these same techniques in the street, you'll be AMAZED at how much faster or safer you can choose to be. You can learn so much more at 1 track day, than what you would learn riding 8 years at your local twisties. Trust and believe that. Thank you Revzilla for sharing this with the motorcycle community! I'm sure many people will find great use of this video 🙏. I hope I get to see you guys at NJMP one day! 💪

Thank you so much man! I’m going into my second race this weekend (2 days) I crashed on my very first race, 3 weeks ago. My issue was rising the clutch for too long into the corner, but my reason for this was because I’m not good at downshifting yet. Every time I downshift going into a corner, I always engine break. Any idea on how to fix this issue? Please let me know !
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 5 лет назад
You gotta rev match. That's when you raise the throttle so the engine RPM is at the same speed the rest of the drivetrain when you re-engage the clutch in the lower gear. This is a crucial skill on the track, in a car or on a bike. Now this may be obvious, but this answers your question. How to get the proper engine speed is a matter practice. In a car, when using heel-toe technique (or just by hitting the gas with your right foot), you simply hit or "blip" the gas pedal to simply bring the revs up when engaging the clutch in a lower gear. However, if you over-throttle, you can have the reverse problem. Instead of engine braking, you're over-accelerating which is essentially the same problem and can lead to traction loss. So this is where the rev "matching" comes in and is important. I hope this helps.

Great video; thank you! How was the rider who went down? Ambulance ride to the hospital? Ouch. The question that occurs to me is this: how much time on a bike before the first track day? I realize it's important to not make "bad habits" permanent. So getting pro coaching is probably a good thing as early as possible. But without the basic skillset on the bike, or on a new bike, you won't get everything out of a track day you should. So, ride for six months and THEN go for the track? I'd be tempted to do it as early as possible to start building skills right from the outset. I'm asking because my first kid is just learning to drive. I KNOW track instruction makes for better drivers. (As does bike racing. 40 mph in the peloton fighting for position around city streets teaches one a LOT about handling, cornering, braking and holding a line.) Nothing teaches how to brake effectively like pushing it to the limit on a 1" wide tire with tiny compact patch. Know how to do this and braking and turning in a car is EASY! I'd LOVE to get my kids moto endorsements and track time so they're better drivers and riders. I actually (somewhat jokingly) suggested my oldest do some road racing to be a better driver. "Ha, ha!" was the response. Anyway, thanks again for a great into video to track days. So much fun and so good for one's skillset out on the streets.

I have only rode a motorcycle twice in my lifetime, I got the hang of it quick I guess. I’m thinking of picking up a motorcycle and taking/keeping it only for the track. As a complete newbie to riding a motorcycle, is this a bad idea? Btw I have had 6 track day experiences with my car, if that makes any difference.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 5 лет назад
That's fine, but I'd recommend you still get a small-displacement bike for the track to start. Motorcycle handling is not the same as a car, of course, so car track days don't really translate to motorcycle track days as far as skill goes. In fact, you might consider doing mini-moto or supermoto track days. -DrewZilla

U-Haul is the best option if you don't have a trailer. They're wicked nice about helping you,the price and flexibility with time is great. But once you go if you are getting into this regularly and for a passion,I'd find a small hitch on Craig's list or marketplace. Obviously every item you own pays for itself in time. But renting everything you need to have a fun day isn't really too bad. Ya sure if you're a McDonald's cashier I wouldn't advise getting into this but any bluecollar,trade worker middle class definitely can afford to get into this

I was overwhelmed first day...too many riders per session. Bout 50...Bad organization too. Seemed like a money grab by the club first then teaching came like next whatever ..follow me.. yada blah. Lost coach every lap he was more concernced bout his lap time then keeping me in his field of vision. 6 riders to 1 coach. I got only 2, 20minute sessions in the 8 hour day and a 5 lap race start to finish. I got jammed 5 wide in a 180 and 2 of us lowsided. No injury and it crunched my Right clip on and throttle and plastic damage. 125$ self repair. 150$ entry day for 13 laps. Bullshit Wont ever ride them again.. Soo I Rode next with "The CO Regulators" a week later.. new club. $75 day 6 hours 102 miles 52 laps. No coach. No crash NOT 45 riders on the track per session. Studied KeithCode.SimonCrafer.LeeParks..some more. I turned 2 minute 30 second laps on a 2.4 mile track by end of day. Next lesson Im hiring a one on one. $ 100 per hour. Evaluate.. Revaluate...give advice then go away. One new piece of riding per track day. I love trackdays now.

"No inside passing"!? That's funny. On European Trackdays they tell beginners exact the opposite. Do not pass outside, because the rider you want to overtake may not be able to hold the inside line in case he is entering the corner too fast and he will push you out! So, overtakes only on the inside... In advanced groups you can overtake wherever you want.

Cool video, I did my first track day two months ago and do my second one in September. It was a lot of fun but I rented the motorcycle and it takes away A LOT of the prep. My only complaint about track days are the expenses. This is not for the cheap or for those who are struggling financially. I am bringing my own bike and the prices are going through the roof. If you don't have a truck, get ready to rent one. You don't want to go on crap tires, so new tires. I plan on going every 4 months or so. Can't wait to get a truck :(

Had been riding mopeds before as well (with a few scares). Then years of nothing. But I've been following MotoGP for years and this year I finally made the call to get into it. Been looking at doing the full licence, but in my current European country of residence the rules and prices suck. So, I did the next best thing, an afternoon's course without exams for 149 bucks with a licence for 125cc bikes the next day! Bought a Suzuki GSX-R125 and have been learning all summer long (1200km+/750mi). Thing goes 138km/h, 85mph in favourable conditions, so it's no slouch. Not too intimidating and very forgiving to start out with. Living in Austria I have been on a couple of tours with some curvy mountainside roads. Still building my confidence, I'm nowhere near maxing out the capability of the bike. It's really me that needs to get better, not so much the bike. But to be honest, it is pretty slow to get off the line, hard to keep up with fast moving traffic and the sound isn't all that great. Now... I might be moving next year and where I'm going getting your full licence seems far less complicated. So I'll probably be doing that next year. I've been looking at bikes. That one Alessandra is riding popped up on my radar. The Kawasaki Ninja 400. Seems like a very good learner yet fun bike that more skilled reviewers even had quite a bit of fun with. Another contender would be the Honda CBR500R. Great looking bike. A little more sluggish compared to the all new Ninja. Believe 'Murica has a Suzuki GSX-R600 and 750 (here there's nothing between 250 and 1000, and you definitely don't want to start on a liter bike without much experience, 600 seems the sweetspot, but there's very little (super)sportbikes with that). When I was looking around and started checking out the 2nd hand market I found the Triumph Daytona 675R to be the bike of my dreams. With carbon fiber, Öhlins shocks, Brembo brakes, Arrow exhaust, the incredible sound of a triple, probably in the top 10 best sounding bikes every made. It's probably the one I'll be saving up for. Otherwise... Everybody was telling me not to get a supersport actually. They're really frantic about getting other people onboard the naked train (actually, even more people were pushing for supermotards/streetlegal dirtbikes). xD Naked bikes that is. Here KTM is very popular with their Duke line-up. But there's also a lot of people riding 2nd hand 600cc's, like the Honda Hornet and Suzuki Bandit. I rented a couple of 125cc bikes after getting my licence last autumn. Tried the KTM Duke 125, but I didn't find it a pleasant bike at all. Rode the Yamaha MT-125, but it was really struggling with wind, moving all over the place. Sat on a KTM RC390, but sitting on it was way to sporty, body leaning far forward with a lot of pressure on the wrists. The one I actually liked most was the Aprilia Tuono 125. Somewhat in between a naked bike and a sportsbike. Then the all new Suzuki GSX-R125 came out with the MotoGP livery, racing DNA, being lightest in class, delivering the best formance and latest trickery (the dashboard is amazing, not quite as nice as the KTM display, and the Suzuki has keyless-go, you can start the bike being in proximity with a dongle in your pocket). I still don't like the front of the bike. The headlight looks a little weird or something, but it's the closest thing to what I had in my mind of driving. Test drove it. Loved it. It's a sporty bike, but the position isn't as extreme as the KTM RC, more in line with that Tuono. Got the special introductory price (4 grand), added a sportspack, stickered it up and am really enjoying it so far. That's really the thing. Finding the kind of bike you would love. Don't let anyone tell you what to do and get, go on, explore and find out for yourself. There's a bit of a cult around another 125cc bike, the Honda GROM or MSX125. People are really hooning around on those, popping wheelies and everything. But that's probably the most affordable new bike you could get into. Though... for a larger fella like yourself it might be a little too tiny of a bike. 2nd hand market is always an idea to get something hopefully cheap, that's not neccessarily 125. Like those mentioned 600cc Hornet or Bandit people around me keep raving about. Anyways, good luck! Regards from a fellow aviation guy.

I’m 63yrs young, and have been riding most of my life, yet have only done one track day (even though I live 10mi from Fontana). That being said, I ride a super naked, and consider myself a fast rider, though I am sure my skills could improve. His was really a great video! And really stresses the point that no matter how good you think you are, track days will make you better. Until you can lap a track time like Marc Marquez, or Valentino Rossi, there’s room for improvement

Great video! Love the down-to-earth approach you guys took. The track-day community is very welcoming, and it's always nice to see everyday riders getting into it.
