In this video Matt shows you how to make a book matched maple top. He even tells you what that is... in case you don't know.
These tops will be thin enough to bend over a forearm contour and that will come in handy for part II

If you're making acoustics, and even if electrics, it's a good idea to "candle" that joint, that is, look at it with light behind it to see if there's any gaps. When it's perfect, not a glint of light will shine through. It doesn't need to be perfect, but it does need to be touching in most places from end to end. Another tip, kind of obvious to any experienced woodworker, is to joint both edges simultaneously with the book-matched closed face to face. This way any deviation from a perfect 90 degrees cancels out. It won't help with keeping things straight though, and will accentuate any gap. The gap should never be at the ends, but a slight one is acceptable in the middle. This is called a spring joint. Violin makers sometimes go for that on purpose.

Show some tips on how to get good re-saws of top wood. Blade tooth specs you've found most success with and so on. I have a bandsaw I need to order a blade for and I might as well order one that increases my success as re-sawing as that is what I'll be doing first.
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
I'll have to see what is on my saw right now. Generally speaking, I like to use a skip tooth for re-sawing but truth be told I just use whatever is on there. BTW I have had great luck with the Starret brand blades

I have a walnut topper wood at 1/2” thick. Is a band saw’s blade width less than 1/4” ok for a guitar top? The claro walnut top is so amazing, that I’d like to get two sets out of it, unless it would be too thin for a guitar top or bottom. Does this make any sense? This is my first build and I don’t want to destroy the wood selection. Is 1/2” too thick for a topper? Thanks for any advice!

A good tip to use for book matching is to place the piece next to a mirror. Sometimes, the best duplicated pattern isn't at the sawn off edge.

I have that same Rikon bandsaw its awesome, you should check out there new over sized, spring loaded guide bearings they are amazing. Takes about 10 seconds to set up the guides and they work killer for re-sawing. They only fit Rikons too so you can make fun of your buddies who bought the wrong bandsaws.
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
That sounds really neat do you have a part number or even a link?
@Ibaneddie76
@Ibaneddie76 6 лет назад
Hey Matt sorry it took a while to get back to you this video just popped up again, you can just go into your local Woodcraft and ask for the new Rikon bandsaw guides kit, they normally stock a couple sets in store. They are the new ones with over sized guid bearings and spring loaded adjustment. They'll know what you are talking about they only fit Rikon saws. I tried to look for the part number but I threw my box out when I replaced the set. Hope this helps somehow.

Lol "not ridiculous paul reed smith kind of flame maple top". Sometimes I scan the maple wood library at the local big box lumber store when I'm there to pick something else up and see what people have sorted out, sometimes I find good flame and buy it! Tip: go in October as they get the whole year worth of maple stock then.

Hey Matt. what is the softest wood you would say to use for making a guitar body from, I have an old pine bed in my garage that is doing nothing useful. should I turn it into a guitar or just set fire to it?
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
You should always turn it into a guitar... you could still burn it later if you really wanted to. Plus, it would look boss on stage. Pine is a great wood we have used it on a few instruments

@stu-j
@stu-j 6 лет назад
First telecaster was made from pine or rosewood I’ve made a few guitars from pine from the local wood shop in the UK a plank costs £8 for a 3 meter x 2 inch x 8 inch plank that makes two body’s. It’s great wood to paint or keep natural and just an oil finish.
@sinistar426
@sinistar426 6 лет назад
just measure the body of the guitar you want to do, divide its width in half and add roughly 1/4 inch. No need to trace 1/2 a body line because that line wont even matter if you have to joint off 1/8 or so to square up the surfaces to be glued. Your going to have to re trace a new body line again after you get done gluing it up because the jointer removes material "where the centerline is"from the body line you just traced. In the end, your just tracing 1/2 a body line on there for nothing only to do it again after you joint it.

@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 4 года назад
Same way, you just need to find the right lumber to start with
@timbeaton5045
@timbeaton5045 6 лет назад
Interesting that you could rely on the jointed edge that you did before re-sawing to close the centre joint the way it did. Do you find that this always works, or does the wood sometimes move enough after re-sawing that you have to rejoin the centre? I can see that this shouldn't move that much, if at all, but wood is wood... So to speak!
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 6 лет назад
I haven't had problems with this technique if nothing else it helps to have a flat edge to ride on the bandsaw table. Give it a try and see what you think. Of course, you can do it later as well if it doesn't give you the results you want. I always clamp it dry before gluing to check.

Good video.... the only thing that I would have liked to see is maybe a nice clear still shot of the top at the end of the video so we can see how well the book match looks. I know it looks good, but in the video you're kind of moving it around a little and there is some light glare, so it makes it difficult to see the grain pattern ect.... probably doesn't help that I'm not wearing my glasses tho... 😜
@TexasToastGuitars
