We got a special request from our good buddy and Master Machinist "Brain Surgery Kevin" for a maple top, left handed Super Strat. He wanted us to use a 1/4 inch top (that's .25 for machinists) and bend the top over the forearm contour. In this video we show y'all one of the ways that we do that. Let's face it, it is much cooler than just cutting off the top on that contoured section. Want to see?

I just did a similar thing. Made a teledyne style tele and put a 1/4 top on. So I cut relief slots on back side of the top but started 1/2 " in and ended a 1/2" from other edge. I wanted a natural binding. It worked out perfect. That 1/2 around the top bent fine with no relief slots.

wen i made mine i used a half maple half mahogany in the hopes of capturing the les paul warmth, i debated using this method but i think the thicker cap sounds better with the old wood i had reclaimed from some antique furniture, the mahogany came from an Italian desk that was made in the 1700s that was beyond repair, the desk top was perfect for what i needed, the top was rescued from an old blanket trunk made in the 1850s in America, it just made sense to use as much of the maple as possible to brighten up the top end while the back calmed down the mids a tad, its still spanky but its got balls just like a les paul, but with the chime of a 62 strat! its the best sounding rig ive ever played!

Best way to bend the top. What works for speaker cabinets, works here as well. Good job! If you use big washers and screws with flat heads, the circular distributed pressure of each screw will overlap more. You get away with less screws that way. Maybe a waste of time, maybe helpful for delicate tops or different material. See you at NAMM. I'm just kidding. You don't need that. Have fun in Vegas and think of me when you shoot some things in the desert.

Hey homes, I try to share a few ways of doing the same job. We have used the screws in place of clamps for several years now and it works great. I probably got the idea from Norm Abrams hahaha We are really looking forward to the NAMM show stay tuned for pictures on Instagram etc. I just talked to Jim in Vegas and we got some good stuff planned.

Love the screws idea. once glued just router and sand the rest away. Will be trying that on my tele build. hard part is choosing the wood now. planning a thin line with a tele bridge pickup and a gretsch style pickup in the neck (because I have one). How thick would a thin line top be?

We have used the screws in place of clamps for several years now and it works great. I probably got the idea from Norm Abrams hahaha. It is certainly much easier to move around than a guitar with 25 pounds of clamps too.

Glad you mentioned not cutting the 1/8" lines all the way to hide them, because I thought you just went for it and I gotta say, I was kids terrified! But having a burst makes sense not worrying about it. Gonna try screws to clamp down my top on my current guitar. Having the Forrest of clamps isn't appealing to me!

Well this guitar will have binding so I did go all the way to the edge, there will be a few lines to hide but that will be a snap. I try to share a few ways of doing the same job. We have used the screws in place of clamps for several years now and it works great. I probably got the idea from Norm Abrams hahaha Plus a box of screws is about the same money as one clamp

We have been using the screws in place of clamps for several years now and it works great. One of the best things is about this method is how easy it is to move the body since it isn't loaded up with 20 pounds of clamps.

Very cool. I like the screws for clamps, brilliant! I used the kerf trick years ago before I was into guitar building for bending a corner on a cabinet I was building. Works great. So are you binding or bursting?

Hey brotherman, We have used the screws in place of clamps for several years now and it works great. I probably got the idea from Norm Abrams. I think in this instance it is the simplest way to go for a top of this thickness. The vacuum bag would have worked well but that's a lot of gear to drag out. I can't remember if Kevin wants binding or a burst.

If you had a burl piece and needed to stabilize with resin, do you stabilize before or after gluing to the contour?

I used to work in a custom woodshop in S Denver that had about ten bench carpenters always competing for limited clamps. "So how many clamps does a woodshop really need? MORE!" Creative screw-clamping methods can solve a lot of that problem. What's a clamp anyway but a screw with pressure surfaces?

Tite-bond and sawdust to hide the kerf cuts at the bend ? The burst will hide a multitude of sins. Can't wait for the next installment.

I’m just wondering why you did not thickness the alder blank first so you would not have to do all that compensating of where the arm carve starts... and its depth... seems a bit awkward.

It actually was... well until I broke that one and had to switch it out to another 1/16 bit hahaha Just a standard bit will work great I probably should have used a 1/8 bit and just gone for it with a larger router. The Dremel worked well though

the relief grooves you put all the way across the top to make the bend has me wondering how are you gonna hide them from the side view or are you gonna bind the edge.

if you burst it or bind it, what reason for the 1/4" rather using 1/8 top. and you are going to have to add filler. to me that doesn't make any sense, and P.S. leave us Machinist alone, we know what we are doing and we know how to use tools. @@TexasToastGuitars

So I take it that wood filler will be added to the kerf after the roundover? Then that is hid by the burst? And just curious, what roundover do you use? 7/16ths?

Guitar is kind of left handed instrument if we consider where it requires the most dexterity. Realistically a lefty should naturally have dexterity the rest of us must learn. Maybe. Lol

If it's gonna be bound anyway you will never see that it's 1/4 rather than 1/8. I don't get why you need to go to the trouble. If it's NOT gonna be bound, the relief slots cut in the glue surface/back of the top will show at the outer edge of the body. What'supwidat? BTW, even if I'm questioning, I still really like your content and so that's why I'm subbed.

No doubt, I covers up all the pre-drilled holes with glue and had to scramble to get the screws in the right spots. Insert hilarious "can't find the right hole" gag here hahaha
