A Tune Up on a modern car is honestly a simple preventative maintenance measure unlike the old days of physically "tuning" and setting things to original or updated specs, but many shops will sell a tune up without being clear on what that includes and here we do our best to show you what goes into a modern tune up of a car and how simple it can be to perform yourself!
Spark Plugs for your XJ -
Mopar Spark Plugs $34 - amzn.to/2jl8ceo
NGK Spark Plugs $16 - amzn.to/2HGMOyZ
Plug Wires (Denso) - amzn.to/2HE1FKj
BG Fuel Injector Cleaner $19 - amzn.to/2jiGizC
The BG Injection System cleaner listed above is more expensive than other options, but it works very well and is professional grade!

I like how you seat the new plug by rotating it backwards until it finds the threads. This is something you should explain to newbs, lest they cross thread the new plugs.

260k miles...WOW. What's not to love about an XJ?! Thanks for the throttle body cleaning tip. I'll do that when I do my next tuneup.

Its at 289,xxx now and still chugging along just fine! In the process of 4x4 swapping it, restoring some interior and getting a lift and long arm setup. Am filming the process and will start releasing videos when it is done.

@@GearHeadsGarageChannel That's so awesome. Incidentally, I just talked to a guy at my favorite auto parts store and he said he bought his '96 with 200k plus. He said he ran it to 440k and the only reason he had to ditch is because he irreparably cracked the frame when he bashed a rock during a river crossing. Sounds like my '98 with 175k is just a baby. :-)

@@wesg3084 I had an 88 that died with 390K on the clock. At the time, I didn't realize that just replacing the engine would be a good idea.

@@georgesakellaropoulos8162 I agree with the motor swap. As long as my chassis remains solid, that's what I'll do if it comes to that.

GearHeads Appreciate your effort to provide these vids. I used a fuel cleaner which was added to the fuel tank. The catalytic converter 'fried'. could be coincidence. I could not trust the fuel additives after that experience. Best to you.
@GearHeadsGarageChannel
@GearHeadsGarageChannel 2 года назад
Not sure what additive you used but unless you put way too much of the wrong thing in I dont see that being likely. Probably just unlucky timing I am sorry to hear that!

Good advice! Is there a general interval between mileage to perform a tuneup? (example: every 30,000 miles).
@GearHeadsGarageChannel
@GearHeadsGarageChannel 6 лет назад
Totally depends on the car and manufacturer recommendations! The average I would say nowadays is spark plugs every 100k, air filter every 30k, throttle body cleaning every 30-60k. But this is for newer cars. Old cars with copper plugs and cap and rotor etc. and more propensity for carbon buildup in the intake I would say do the throttle body cleaning more often and spark plugs might be needed more like every 30-50k depending on the type.

I've had my Xj for about five or six months and I've taken it from 200k to 280k not even thinking it would go that far, I've always had the tuning components, just lazy 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ it be the time though.

BEAVIS Motorsport Hey man! Havent heard from you in awhile hope your doing well. Yes we will be doing more soon, life just has been busy and I have had much less time and energy lately, starting back up on the Miata now after a run of projects on the Jeep, still more videos to edit and upload for that but the Miatas are coming back soon!
