Springtime is the perfect time to depart the classroom and school in the field. What better place than outdoors in nature? I schedule our units so that our science units are in the spring when my kids and I just can't sit or focus and we all need to get out and get our bodies moving so our minds can move.
For more information on how I schedule our units throughout the year, click here:
-coming soon-
What science units are in store for us this spring? Well, we had three science units scheduled, but I know one of them will have to be pushed back until the fall (geology and mineralogy).

I'm not sure if milkweed plants grow in your area but monarch butterflies will lay their eggs on them and the caterpillars eat the leaves. We have them grow in our front garden and then if I can spot a females laying an egg I'll grab the leave and my daughter can see the whole life cycle of a monarch each year! In the Chicagoland area it happens later in the summer! Since I know you were saying you weren't sure if you would get to the butterfly book it could be something later in the summer!

Thanks for the suggestion :) It's been years since we've watched a caterpillar make a cocoon and turn into a butterfly...but actually, I'm pretty sure we used green tomato worms and they turned into moths!! Not as pretty and not a good idea for a garden! I'll look into what we can do around here because a friend of mine just reordered her butterfly kit. -Hana

I was waiting months for this and it was worth the wait!! I loved almost everything I saw & for my guys I def want to get the counting with nature, letters in nature, daily nature activities & I actually have one the eyewitness books! Thanks for taking the time to do these amazing videos for us!!! I know you could be using the time to craft etc but let me say....in less than 30 min you had close to 40 views.... I commented because I just love to express my thanks in that way but even though others may not comment or like you have to know your doing such a phenomenal job!!! I'm so proud of you!!

Awe Kristy, those are such kind and encouraging words. Yes, you're right, I would be scrapbooking if I wasn't making these videos! But it's also become its own creative outlet. The response has been positive, so that keeps me going. I love books that merge subject matter. It's inline with real life. I think some of the upcoming projects are going to be pretty cool. We learned how to forage for food! And make pine needle baskets! But you probably already saw it on Instagram :) -Hana

Loved this video. You are using a few books we used this year and loved :) I really liked Math in the garden and the alphabet photo book. Its a good book to just give my kids a camera and have them find the alphabet in a hunt outside. I will have to try that next year :) Thank you for sharing and explaining all these wonderful books.. love watching your videos :)
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 8 лет назад
I recognized the book we both have :) I was thinking the same thing: Give my kids a camera and see if they can find the alphabet during one of our nature hikes. Admittedly, we haven't gotten to 90% of these books! We still have time, but we've been doing other things, too. My curriculum review for this unit will be quite interesting! And I forgot to mention the game we are using. 'Wildcraft' has been a perfect accompaniment to this unit. -Hana

Once again, I've found a video from you to do our next unit of study. I was wondering if you have ever done the little nature walk at the back bay in Newport Beach.
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 лет назад
Oh hey Rachel! We've done Newport back bay for bike rides, but not as a nature walk. I do love the beaches with tide pools though. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be memorable and educational :)

Pepper and Pine yeah! Riding bikes on the main road back there is great. In fact, my legs ache just thinking about the climb at the end. 😅😂

Thank you! I admit that now that we are well into this unit, it's been 90% hands-on and almost no book work at all. I love the books I got so much, and I feel like somehow I'm going to have to incorporate the "one small square" books into some daily reading in the fall. We just cannot convene in the school room these days! Kids are outside or reading independently. Yes to your question (though I'm not sure what it is, lol). -Hana

Love all your videos! So do you only do science in the spring?
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 8 лет назад
Hey Sarah! I'd like to only do science in the spring officially, but you know with homeschooling kids are learning many varied things through the year. However, I found that in the last few years, I've been starting the school year with a small unit in one of the sciences. This year we had a hard time staying focused this spring, so our geology unit is pushed to the fall. -Hana

Hi Hana! How do you like your Wildcraft board game?
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 лет назад
My kids like it more than I do. I think the cards could be used for nature study. The game is a little bit long so we double the number of the game spinner to make the game go faster. It's non-competitive which takes the fun out of it for kids about 8 or 9 years and older, but evens out the playing field for younger kids.

Pepper and Pine okay thanks for your help! If i don't find anything more fun...I may still get it just to teach her natural healing properties. Thanks for all you do!

Im interested in the Waldorf method but I have only heard of it hrouh ur videos. I am in Michigan. Are there websites that u can recommend for more info and resources for material and curriculum
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 8 лет назад
Hi Mahreen! I'll look around for some websites about the Waldorf method. I'll add the links to the description box, and notify you when I do. One book that might be helpful is called "Understanding Waldorf Education" by Jack Petrash. The curriculum we use for inspiration is from www.live-education.com. There are some pictures and info on their site, but very soon, I'll be reviewing each grade of their curriculum while explaining some of the philosophy behind the methodology. -Hana

Help! My 6 year old loves sea creatures and anything to do with sharks and whales. I haven't a clue of what a unit study is. Caould I create one or do one, a unit study?
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 лет назад
Hello! You can easily put together a unit study by starting with your local library. Because you child is young, I think keeping it simple, like reading picture books on the subject area is a great way to start. Next you might considering getting an activity book on the subject matter you're interested in. Again, use the library as inspiration. The activity books will provide ideas on bringing in some hands-on project. You could add a cooking element to your unit study and have fish for dinner. You could also schedule a field trip to the aquarium or if you live close to the beach, a field trip to the beach for a day.

Thanks. I added some new books, ordered some all pertaining to the ocean life and creatures and bought a few toys for him. He's in and out of that box (blue themed utility bin) I got him for his stuff. We will spend our summer focused on the ocean, along with learning how to read and some math. I guess we will be doing a more relaxed version of summer school since he likes to learn and work. I ordered some of those books you showed on the video.

He is one of my favorite illustrators. He did the 13 Moons on Turtle's Back. However, some of my favorites are Family Farm, The Boy Who Held Back the Sea, The Artist, and another one that I can't remember the title too. Gorgeous books. Your library should have them.

Call me dumb (I'm homeschooling for the first year) but how do you know what to teach...like I get that's the beauty of homeschooling that you're free to teach what you want...but I guess I'm not as "creative" with topics Like not enough to come up with a year's worth of topics or units I'm sure if I had a guideline as far as subjects and topics...like say This year math has to cover Geometry..then I'd know to research geometry for my childs age I hope I make sense
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 лет назад
Hello! Since it's your first year, it can be overwhelming figuring this all out. There are a couple of things you can do. First, check the State Department of Education for your state and see what the topics/subject areas are for your state and grade. This makes a good outline. Also, you can check whatever curriculum you are using for subject/topic ideas. Then when one interests you, you can turn that into a unit study. Then you can return to the curriculum.
@OurAdventure
@OurAdventure 6 лет назад
Pepper and Pine oh ok. So basically I can keep the curriculum I'm using and just incorporate units into it
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 лет назад
Absolutely! I think that's the easiest way to try out units. Because our curriculum is unit based (Waldorf curriculum uses main lessons which differ from units, but they are pretty similar), it's easy for me to elaborate on them. So our whole schooling approach is unit study, but with a traditional curriculum you can take time to turn a topic area into a unit study.
