www.crosstrainingenduro.com You can waste a lot of energy and time trying to u-turn your dirt bike. Let's look at some ways to make it easier, especially in hard terrain and tight tracks.

First a quick refresher from our basic u-turns video. Just lean the bike over against your leg, feed in clutch and spin that rear wheel around. It's easy but there are plenty of options that don't rip up the track too. The sidestand technique is only recommended for bikes with a very strong sidestand. A good pivot turn can spin the bike around in less than its own length, but it can be hard for shorter riders. It can be tough for tall riders too. You need to pull the front up as quickly as possible with the bike barely moving. The usual problem is if the bike does build up speed you are trying to wrench a moving bike around, instead of pivoting a nearly stationary bike. You can combine the rear wheel spin and pivot turn for a faster u-turn that can be easier for shorter riders as the front wheel doesn't come up too high. Lean the bike over against your leg. Compress the front forks then as they rebound, drop the clutch and pull the bars in the desired direction. You should be able to keep the bike firmly against your inside leg as it spins around. Practice this on a very loose surface like gravel to prevent the bike launching away from you. Mini u-turns are great in rough terrain or for shorter riders. Instead of a 180 degree turn, make a series of smaller turns. You can also do a series of very small pivot turns by weighting the forks then releasing the clutch very quickly for a brief instant. Done correctly, the bike will barely move forward which is very useful in rocky terrain. Save energy. Make the bike do the work by riding up slopes and rolling the bike back.
Think outside the box and use obstacles to help turn the bike around. In some cases you may be able to get the front wheel along the obstacle. You can bounce the front wheel off rocks, logs, steep banks or rock faces to help turn that front wheel around. You can do this on the move in a trials-style floater turn, use the obstacle to make pivot turns easier, or for short riders, just hop off the back then ease the bike into a u-turn. On a steep hill climb, you can just hop the front wheel around. This will be easier with small amounts of throttle and a quick slip of the clutch. If it is very steep, you can pull the bike into a vertical position and spin it around.
VERTICAL PIVOT TURN
This leads into the vertical pivot turn, a cool technique for the taller riders in very tight spots. Compress the front forks, then apply a very quick bit of clutch and throttle to lift the front wheel very quickly. The trick is to have almost forward speed so you can hold the bike vertically then pivot it around to the desired direction. And it might look ridiculous, but walking the bike like this can sometimes get you through very deep ruts to avoid the footpegs digging in.
If a tight trail has a steep wall, the vertical pivot turn becomes easier. Simply do a normal pivot turn then rest the front wheel against the wall. It is usually easier if you stall the engine as this prevents the bike from rolling backwards. Don't start too close to the wall, or use too much throttle.
REAR WHEEL HOPS
The rear rear wheel hop is an advanced trials technique that looks great but in reality is not an essential skill. It's rare to see even Graham Jarvis using this in an extreme enduro. We have done a training vid on this if you are interested. However, on very steep slopes you can apply the front brake, and push on the handlebars to bounce the rear wheel around. Once the rear wheel is in the air, push your body against the bike to swing it around.
PIVOT TURN OVER LOGS
We've already covered this, in a tight spot you can actually use a log to do a u-turn if needed.
U-TURN ON HILLS
A lot of the techniques covered will help you turn around on the hill, but if you have room we have covered the basic technique of turning right in an existing video.
So there you go guys, 10 different ways to do u-turns. You don't need to learn them all, but it's certainly handy to have know a few of these for those tough sections out there.

Thanks a lot for the uploads, you don't have a clue how much you've helped me! I live in West Virginia, and the trails here are gnarly as hell. By watching your vids and a lot of practice, I have been pretty successful at getting the ol CRF450R out on the hill and back in one piece! I'm being 100% serious when i say you could very well have kept me from getting killed or seriously injured just by teaching me a lot of the proper techniques of dirt biking. For that, you'll always have a friend in me bub!

One thing rarely discussed when this type of maneuver comes up is the importance of learning it on a small, light bike as opposed to how exponentially harder it is to learn it on a 300+lb big bore or duallie. Sooooooo many riders start on a bike that's just way bigger than their skill level, and these types of skills just never get there because they never got something that was easy to manhandle. Yes, you can learn them on a big bike, but it's so much harder.

the hill climb U-turn is the one I recently used but more difficult because there was cacti on either side of me and it was only a singletrack climb. I tried to take the hill in 2nd gear, almost got to the top but the last bit was a 1' deep single track rut in between 2 cacti and I stalled it!!! the bike almost took me into the left cacti then the bike was sliding backwards and all I could do was grab the front brake and use my feet to help! I finally was able to slide the bike around with the rear tire in the deep rut as a pivot point. That was my first ever singletrack hill climb! The adrenaline was so high when the bike stalled! Its like an addictive, now I have to conquer that hill haha. I love your videos, they inspire me to ride till I die! The better your technique gets the less strain it is on the body. so by the time im 70 I should be going fast but have little impact on my body!

Practiced today on a nearby 3,300 ft mountain (in Tennessee) on my DR 650, and on a trail that is so steep it must be 75 or more degrees of climb, and a half mile long. 3 days ago I chickend out even trying it. Most guys with pure dirt bikes won't do it! Today after watching this video, Instead of being afraid, I was literally going half way up and PURPOSLEY stalling and turning it around! Not rolling backwards! I felt IN CONTROL which made me want to keep doing it and perfecting it...I didnt even try to get to the top of the mountain, I was having too much fun. I'm climbing hills I wouldn't dare try before thanks to this vid! However, when stopping on a steep hill I turn left instead of right...it doesn't seem to matter though :)

great to hear, that recover technique for hill climbs is worth its weight in gold!
@thugstomper8625
@thugstomper8625 7 лет назад
It really is. However, maybe you can make a tutorial about going downhill! I learned the hard way today. Going down on such a long steep grade and with slippery rocks and roots can be intimidating to say the least, especially here in Tennessee thanks to the leaves of Autumn covering the trails. I learned quite quickly that there are 3 tools at one's disposal. The front brake, the rear brake, and the clutch. Each time I purposely stalled climbing up and turned the bike perpendicular to the trail, I always CUT MY ENGINE OFF but left it in first gear so I would have that as a helpful tool. Did the front wheel shimmy trick to point it downwards. Going downward on that kind of steep, I noticed the rear brake is almost useless. Depend on it too much, and the rear will slide sideways and I would lose control. So I would just tap it, relying on the front brake mostly, and if I started to slip on the leaves, let out the clutch which works much better than the rear brake. If I still started to gain too much speed, I would resort to my patented Fred Flintstone technique, putting my boots down to give it an extra couple of brakes which seemed to work well. The main thing is to go SUPER SLOW to remain in control. Go just a little too fast on such a steep downhill, and it will be un-recoverable. So I ride super slow downhill, using all 3 tools (5 counting both feet) and with CONFIDENCE above all.
@crosstrainingenduro

Though it doesn't take much to mentally exhaust me.

Great tricks Barry! I sometimes do those wheel spin/pivot turn combos when I fuck up the real pivot turns. Thanks to you I now can say it was meant to be done like this :D Those vertical pivot turns tend to destroy my licence plate when I give it too much throttle. I think I need to install some sort of hinge to allow some movement.

funny thing is i'm still not sure if the top riders would say that combo is official or not, but it does seem to work well in some situations though. :D

+CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS Great videos and tips. As for the ones in this video and others, I'd like to see how you apply them in very muddy, slippery conditions. Nearly all your videos are on dry ground with good traction, which in the UK is somewhat rare, but getting stuck and needing to turn around isn't. Thanks for the education.

easiest options to alter our weather patterns to suit are (a) a worldwide nuclear exchange to bring on a nuclear winter and hopefully more rain or (b) dig a massive trench from adelaide into the centre of australia to create an inland sea that would cause precipitation on the eastern coast. :(

i wonder if they might lower the seat height a little on the 2017 pumpkins? even we tall freaks of nature like the lower height of the italians....
@gncc1race
@gncc1race 8 лет назад
+CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS I have noted the comments in many bike reviews of the Betas that their seat height is more accommodating. I love my EXC, and have my sights set on a 2018 500 EXC, finances allowing. Hopefully KTM will realize the difficulty the uber seat heights cause. But I doubt it. The Betas are looking better and better all the time. But there is no real Beta dealer in Alaska (not one with a show room...), and the new gen Katos dropped some serious weight and entail a number of other improv's. If I get an '18 EXC and it's nose bleed high like my '14, I'll almost certainly get the susp lowered. Seat ht and my short inseam are the greatest impedence to my cross training progress.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
that lower seat height is a great feature but of course any decent suspension shop should be able to get a ktm to match without upsetting the apple cart too much....
@gncc1race
@gncc1race 8 лет назад
+CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS I know... I should have gone there with my current ride. But my first love is the classic dirt bike rip over rough terrain and I didn't want to lose any suspension travel. The last year or so I've become more interested in cross training style riding, and seat height has become an immense obstacle. When I'm on the rip, it's just not an issue. But the foot-down spin turn that I used to do on other bikes is nearly impossible on this one. My old '05 RFS 450 EXC was tall enough to be problematic, but not quite as bad as the 500. Sucks to be short and fat!

Thanks for the vid Aussie. Tell me this. When doing a log pivot turn, are you concerned the bike will land on your foot / ankle? Maybe I need to leave a bit of space between the log and my bike when I pull up alongside it. That will cause the bike to lean towards me and make the spinning back wheel take the bike away from me in the turn. Make sense?

How about the Alaskan bog bush pig technique? It is an essential off road riding skill here in Alaska. That's what I do after discovering I have become stuck in the middle of the trail that is wheel sucking bottomless mud covered by nice green grass. The kind of mud that sucks your boots right off your leg if you try to walk out for help. Once all forward momentum is lost, usually only 8 to 10 feet (5 t0 7 cubits) from firm ground, you slide off the bike and try to step on the biggest clumps of grass to help support your weight back to firm ground. Then you gather logs, branches, animal bones or other stiff and long supports. Place them on the bog and crawl back to your bike by picking up the ones behind you and putting them in front of you. When you are back to your bike, which will be standing upright buried to the engine, you place the logs, branches, sticks, dead animals or whatever next to the bike as a mat on the surface of the bog. Then by putting one foot on the foot peg and one hand on that side handle bar you lean back as far as you can away from the bike to side load it. You may have to hang out there for several minutes (or much longer) but eventually the bike will begin to lean over and onto the mat you made. As the bike leans over you slowly climb up onto the seat and tank forcing the bike to lay over on its side. Warning! Do NOT fall head first into the bog! You will suffocate if others aren't there to pull you out! Finally the bike will be on its side and ready to turn around. Simply drag the front wheel around so that it is pointing the direction you want. All done, and a good job! OK, you are pointed the right way. Now you fasten the steel cable come-along you always carry to a sturdy tree and ratchet your bike that 8 to 10 feet (1.25 fathoms) back to firm ground. Success! You can now continue your fun trail ride. Unless the mosquitoes have drained too much of your blood of course.

damn that sounds way out of our league jaglite lol! i assume a lot of alaskans must decide to just take up chess instead? :)
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад

@JagLite
@JagLite 8 лет назад
Actually most Alaskans are smarter than motorcycle riders. Everyone has snow machines for the winter and for the summer... They ride 4 & 6 wheel ATV's with big floater tires. AND they have power winches mounted. Our "trails" here are snow machine (snowmobile) routes and great in the winter when the bogs are frozen, it is the other 3 months that our trails become challenging. I sold my 4x4 ATV and bought more motorcycles... Not smart.
@JagLite
@JagLite 8 лет назад
With others it is much easier since they can help gather logs, sticks, and other stuff. A few have tried to skip the first steps and just hooked up a come-along to the rear wheel and pull it out backwards. That usually results in breaking spokes and making the rim egg shaped. Or if the rear wheel comes free and the front doesn't, bent forks. But we don't have poisonous snakes, spiders, and the other unfriendly critters you have down there.
@crosstrainingenduro

Ok I watched it, very interesting. But I do a lot of extreme enduro, and the screw heads of my rear "pulling belt" were hurting my legs already, so that I had to replace it with round low screw heads. So I fear this will hurt me and my wife desagrees I show so much black & blue punches on my body already !!!! On top of it I ride the only not listed bike : a 300 2 Stroke Sherco ! Sorry to support our French industry ! On top of the top, if you consider my Sherco is one of the heaviest of its category, plus discs x2, frame, exhaust, muffler, levers, chain guide protections, Tools, cheese and wine in my bag, I will soon need a truck driving licence to go riding.... cheers !

Do you think there is an upper weight limit for the bike when doing these u-turns? My CRF250L comes in at 144kg stock, is that too heavy do you think? There has been times out adv riding that I have needed to turn around in some tight places and I wonder if I can adapt your technique to cope with my bike. Any ideas?
@Szat01
@Szat01 8 лет назад
Well, I think it depends on your height and strength, I had a DR-Z 400 E which is at around 140kg, and I can tell you it sucks to do pivot turns or even any type of U-turn on that big bike. I am 175cm tall by the way. For me it was horrible so i sold it and bought a way lighter bike (105kg 4stroke 250 Husky) So yeah, it is way better with lighter bikes, but if you are strong as an ox and tall enough you should have less problem. :D
@richrides2308
@richrides2308 8 лет назад
I guess it's most about the right technique, but for sure height & stregth are important points too. I didn't expect it to work, but I did some kind of pivot turn on a XT660R with 180kg dry weight. I used a little heap to rise the front wheel in the first place, then it was pretty easy. I must confess that I'm pretty tall and have long legs :D I think there's an earlier video where Barry does a pivot turn on the DR650 on his ADV channel!
@Szat01
@Szat01 8 лет назад
+RichRIDES Yeah, i forgot to mention that good technique is a key feature. :) But still it must be hell to move that DR650 or XT660 around :D (Not to mention Chris Birch on the KTM Adventure rhino.)
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
yep, technique, height and strength probably in that order. the DR650 isn't hard to pivot turn but it does need a fair bit of commitment! i've seen a guy pivot turn a ktm 990. it's really just for the challenge though, as that side stand technique is probably the safe way in a tight spot.
@rusticthumper5500
@rusticthumper5500 8 лет назад
Thank you everyone for your thoughts. I think the side stand U-turn may be my only option, but having said that I will try to learn the pivot turn. That will be good for many laughs. Might be funny to video it. On a serious note, how would the Beta RR480 go with the u-turns? I think she is 30+kg lighter than the CRF250L

The disclaimer is incomplete. It does not say that we will be faced with 10 different u-turn choices, which can cause anxiety and confusion in a difficult riding situation. Worse, not having a kickstand on my bike makes me feel depressive because now that I know all those possibilities, I feel i am missing something. After seeing this video, I am not even sure if I must realize my long term dream of buying an orange anodized oil drain plug or going instead for a stupid kickstand. In the long run, your videos can cause psychological disorders. The proof is in these systematic few dislikes you get on each video. Some seems to be in serious mental pain after seeing too much of your videos and became emotionally unstable.

My bike is a YZ250F, but it has no low end. Like, I can do power wheelies in 4th gear but in if I'm not in high revs in first gear it won't wheelie. This makes it very hard to do the slow wheelies and pivot turns. I can only do about half a pivot turn and I can go pretty far with my slow wheelies if I somehow get it up, but that's rare.
@aidangillett5396
@aidangillett5396 8 лет назад
It may seem hard to believe until you do it (or see someone else do it on your bike) but power is almost NEVER an issue. I can pivot turn a CT110 postie bike, and it doesn't even have a manual clutch!. It's all about your timing and technique
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
exactly aidan, that's what the recent slow practical wheelie vid was all about.... you don't need to modify an enduro bike for more power to then do wheelies when it will just compound poor technique.
@isaachepworth7066
@isaachepworth7066 8 лет назад
Aidan Gillett CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS yall are lucky to have enduro bikes. I can do slow wheelies better on a crf100 then I can on a 250. The 250 is simply harder. For pivot turns, I guess I can just pop the clutch out real quick to get it up then swing it around. But it's near impossible to do slow wheelies cause usually I have to feather my clutch all the way too 10 mph when taking off to not bog so I've been able to get it up, it just bogs so I can't stay up long. The first gear is huge it goes to exactly 29 mph. And the bike tops out around 65-70
@aidangillett5396
@aidangillett5396 8 лет назад
You say that and you probably believe it, but in reality a ride who has mastered the technique could come along to your 250F and do pivot turns all day. You hurl more excuses and he will just pull more pivot turns and slow wheelies. It's not the power. I know it's not easy to believe when you have difficulty doing them but trust that its not the bike. It does help IMMENSELY when someone else who can do them, shows you in person, as they can look at you and guide you in realtime rather than you having to reflect on what you think might not be working. However when you are on your own and you blame the bike, it can be such a roadblock that you actually prove yourself right by not doing them. My only advice is watch the video's and practice, rewatch, practice, dedicate an hour to it, sleep on it, try it again. It will click eventually If you are that hung up on the gearing then simply change it. But you'd be surprised just how little power you need. Most common mistake is people giving too much power, in reality you can 'blip' a bike upright with an absolutely tiny amount of power if the timing is technique is right. I'm talking going from 1500 to 2000rpm for not even half a second. Watch Jarvis doing it, then reflect on what you are doing. Listen to the engine revs. I found that when I did that and pulled myself back from the throttle, and instead put more body weight into the suspension and got the timing right, I could do the same, puny amount of power needed. It's all about transfer of energy to where you want it, not applying boatloads of it to attempt to overcome the laws of physics
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
perfect description of it all, aidan. it's all about technique and timing, the bike is largely irrelevant. as you say, jarvis barely gets above idle and uses minimal throttle, he would have a DRZ400 pointing skyward in just the same way too.
