Let's see if the Surfr guys ever get to that. I believe it's low priority as it requires developing in Garmin's proprietary operating system and language. Quite difficult I gather. Soon it will be possible to get it on a $50 Android watch 😜
Wow Mike, what a production this video, such high quality content. Thanks for creating this and sharing your in-depth thoughts with the kiting world. 👊
We can now see the g-force involved in some of our landings - 5 or 6Gs - so my 8kg. head, for that moment, weighs 40 or 50 kilos! That's a lot. My neck is very strong however after a few hours of jumping and even just one or two controlled crashes I develop neck pain a day or two later (once the adrenaline wears off 😂). Do you have any suggestions for minimizing or avoiding this condition before it becomes more serious. Thanks for all your work in this great sport!
I’m sold with the onboard coaching app, that’s a game changer! I wasn’t gonna get it because I don’t really care for all the data and stats because that usually just distracts me from my session, but to be able to get real time edging guidance and coaching will come in clutch and improve my skills. I’ll give this a go, I picked up the board mount. Thanks Mike! Let’s get high!
Hi Mike. Tell me please. How do kite size, jump height and rider weight depend? If I weigh 95kg, which kite should I take, 8m, 9m, or 10m? How can I jump higher? Or will I not be able to jump high with such a weight? The wind is blowing around 30 knots. Thank you!
Hi Mike thanks for your video ! I have a garmin watch on which i can put android apps. How soon do you think the version of Surfr App for android watches will be released ? Do you think the accuracy of surfr app will be good on these watches since the sensors can be different depending on the watch used ? Thanks in advance ! 🤙
Hey Alexandre! Amazing that you can install Android apps on your specific Garmin watch. Didn't know that was an option! Yes the results will be the same accross devices. Even when we compare $100 phones to $1000 phones, we get consistent results. The Android watch app should be out in 1 to 2 months 😁🚀 The team is working on it as we speak
I have a garmin vivoactive 4 and I can put some apps on it, I had put the woo app for garmin to have the height displayed on the watch after each jump but I lost my woo and I don't really want to pay 200 euro for a new one 😅 Being able to have surfr directly on the watch without needing the phone would be really nice ! 😊
Hey mate, I have difficulty especially when doing a higher front roll, and getting lost where the kite is, and when and how much stirring the kite forward again.... do you keep your eyes on the kite?
The app always asks for me to correct or verify the wind direction after a session. How does it get its wind direction initially before you correct it afterwards for accurate tips during the session?
Great tips and production, I really like these explanations with the vector graphics on the top. Is there a link for the mentioned edging technics video? can't find it so far
Hi Mike, I'd consider myself a decent big air kiter and think my edging pop etc are are fairly solid but am looking for some thoughts on optimal kite position for maxing height. I can get 14/15m fairly consistently in good conditions but find it difficult to replicate jumps in the 18-20m consistently. I've noticed in some of the clips of riders like yourself and Evan Klijn in balenrario and leucate that ye are almost send the kite back to 9/3 o'clock like way back in the window. I'm wondering by continuing to send the kite back does it keep tension and hence keep lifting for longer ? most people tend to send it past 12 but not way past it. I'm looking to eke every bit of height I can once I'm airborne and am wondering if sending the kite back further would help? Any feedback would be appreciated. And of course I've watched you're previous videos, this is just a observation form watching the likes of yourself, Jamie overbeek etc Cheers, Eoghan
well done, did you sort out all the questions right? Please do the technique of jumping from the kicker wave , otherwise there are questions how to get the maximum effect of a springboard ?
Hey Mike, thanks to this video I ordered the board mount. I easily hit 8m but am struggling with hitting 10+. I wanted to take lessons but this might already be what I was looking for!
Thanks bru! Yes I recently hired a full time editor and he's doing an amazing job. We're really getting into the flow of things and plan on producing way more how to's etc. Yeww!
Hi Mike, Yesterday I’ve tested the surfr App with my apple watch. It works great. I believe technically the sensors it uses from the watch likely provides better data than from traditional kite jump sensors. Just one comment: I think it would be better to have a board mount base plate design to have it stably connected under the handle - I mean using the screw holes of the handle. But maybe this is not universal enough as a generic gadget to sell. I do not like use adhesive tape or additional screws with my boards. Maybe need to design and 3D print a holder myself… In any case: great App!
Thanks for the feedback Holger! I think the sensors are much the same, but the algorithm that Surfr is running is superior 🚀 whether you're using a basic $100 phone, $300 apple watch or $1000 phone you will get consistent data 👌
Hi Mike. What a great video. I reach 10m jumps easily but I am kinda stuck there. I think my edging and speed is fine so would this on board device actually help me?
Hi Mike, Very good video and contribution to Surfr app. I do agree with you on the fact that such a tool and video can help you to improve your jumps. How about the difference of information you get in wetsuit mode and board mode on the Surfr app pro. I do guess in wetsuit mode you cannot get info about the board like edging angle or board angle on the water. May you can get speed..
how could the app know the heading relative to the wind direction ? Does it use GPS and weather data to know the wind direction - in which case that seems like it could be inaccurate when you are trying to measure heading with a few degrees of accuracy, or does it somehow estimate based on your riding behavior?
Great question! It measures the wind based on riding behavior. It works in a few specific use cases, and there are use cases where it won't be accurate. You can also manually input the wind direction if you have some kind of empirical method of measuring. In this scenario you would get accurate data. In the meantime, in order to get accurate data, I suggest doing tacks and jumps in both directions, in a short time frame (so the wind doesn't change), without doing a downwinder. This should result in an accurate recording of wind direction
Not yet! Apparently it's quite difficult to develop an app for Garmin's OS. I'll find out exactly why and share the info. If it does come, it's going to be a good few months before it does
Super nice 👌 I have already board mount , Can you make one short movie about controlling kite, I mean one hand on a bar while doing contraloops or kiteloops , I would like to start with board offs but I am strugling to control kite while other hand is taking board off
All this is super good data. Is there a point where looking down at the board to achieve proper technique is going to take your eyes away from kite positioning prior to take off? Or is this phone mount big enough where you can maintain focus on both? Maybe i missed this but can your carving angle stats be achieved from a watch so while your approaching you can view the wrist instead of looking down?
Looks very cool actually. How about apple watch support when connected with the board mount? Also is there any US shipping or always from Europe? How does the mount fasten to the board?
There's a base plate which sticks to the board with super strong 3M adhesive. I don't think the Apple Watch connects with the phone for simultaneous use, but you can use them independently at the same time
Thank you Mike! As usual your video are insane, fun and very structive! Just bought the board mount after listening to your video 😜 I already use the surfr pro app for one year now and I just don't know why the f... I did not buy the board mount earlier!!! 🙃🤙
I use a cheap phone with no SIM to register my session. However you need internet network at this end of your session to register it on Surfr server. What I do I share a wifi connection with my other and best phone at the end of session to be able to register the session.
Great info, but what about those of us who like to ride strapped surfboards in the waves and still jump as high as possible? Seems like all your videos are in flat water with twintips.
Thanks! My videos are definitely only for twintips as that's what I know best :D But the teachings apply to any water conditions. Sorry I can't assist with jumping using a surfboard
You mentioned an edging video again. I've been waiting for your edging video for at least a year!! Glad to see you're flying again. Your injury must have been horrendous!
