Good work Anthony, I shared this with my Level 2 Plastering students today, this is more of a stretch and challenge objective too introduce the youngsters into different aspects of our trade. Regards...Malcolm
I’ve just done some dash work, I’ve done a couple of garages and patched in the top of 2 gable ends. Quite a therapeutic process. Another good vid and a very neat and tidy job, keep them coming mate 👍🏼
Nice job but we normally use 4:1 for scratch coats then 5:1:1 for floating coat. 3:1 is a bricklaying mix...or so ive always been led to believe..Thanks for posting.
Forgive me if this is a naïve comment, but I love the look of either harling or pebbledashing, but I live on the east coast of the US where that is definitely not the normal house exterior finish. I would love to be able to build a house some day, and have a pre-cut kit company in mind for a post and beam house, but my question is: does pebbledash or harling have to be done on stone/brick? Or can it be done on wood? Again, probably naïve, probably can't put that type of finish on wood, but I don't really know who to ask!
You can render over wood but you will need to prep it. I would recommend that you’ll need building paper and galvanised metal mesh on top this should stop any cracking and give you some key for the render to grip. Then you should be able to put a render scratch coat on Then a finish coat and pebble straight on top. Hope that helps 👍
Hello I have pebble dash at the top part of my house, lower part is bricks. But I have watee pentrating through the pebble dash , to the inside of the house marking an damaging the plaster inside. Any idea how I can fix this , an waterproof the pebble dash ? Thanks
I’ve had this conversation a few times on the forums. it all depends on where abouts you are based and what quarries you use. Here in north Wales we have our own quays and our red sand is our building sand. We use it for both scratch coat and finishing coat. This is tried and tested, as I’m a third generation plasterer I know what works in my area. But from the people I talk to it’s seems to depend on what area you live and what’s available.
Thanks, i don’t I only work in north Wales and a tiny bit into Cheshire. I’m lucky I don’t tend to Have to travel to far, there’s plenty of work round my way. 😀
Hi Anthony, you do a very nice job. I pebbledashed houses for 30 years or more . However I am long retired and I want to pebble an extension I have just built. Trouble is all the materials seem to have changed. What is the best waterproofer nowadays. I used to use Feb at one time and I can't remember the name of the other . If its Feb what is the exact name as they seem to have several types these days? I used 3.5 to 1 (with 1/3rd pint of Feb) for scratch coat , and 4 to 1 for top coat. Thanks . Bernie
Cheers Ian, it depends on the waterproofer. It’s best to follow the instructions on the tub as they differ from product to product. Also if your sand is wet you might want to add extra direct to the mix rather than in the water(especially this time of year). I always say more waterproofer than less.
We just bought an old house that has pebble/bottle dash, it’s SUPER dirty. What do you recommend to clean it? We also have some please that need to be repaired… no one around here does it so we’re going to try our best to do it ourselves.
Hi, I’ve not really got any good advice for cleaning pebbledash. Using water but not a power washer as it might knock the pebble off, would be the first thing to try. you could always paint the pebble. I’ll have to look into it. Good luck with patching the patching pebble I’ve done a video on patching if that can be any help it might worth a watch. If you need any advice just drop me message 👍
