-Minimum / maximum on governor -Low air pressure warning -Spring breaks supply automatically between 20-45psi -Compressor builds air volume in certain amount of time -Leak test
I'm in the process of getting my class 3 drivers license and air brake endorsement in BC, Canada. It is extremely hard and overwhelming to remember everything you're supposed to know as well as just being safe in real life road situations. Salute to all the truck drivers that's been doing this !
Hi Robert Padgett - Thank you for your comment. And we're here to help. We have a course over at the Smart Drive Website that will guarantee that pass your air brakes first time. It simply explains this information, and will give you step-by-step instructions for you there in GA. Have a look at the course here: www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-cdl-air-brakes-course If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I passed and had my class B from 2004 to 2008, but got out out driving. Trying to get it back now, so much more regulations and pre trip and air brake tests are much more extensive.
I am Trucker from Algeria I came here to Canada NS since 60 days . I passed the Class1 today . I would like to thank you about all your videos .. its really helpful , I watch it all from Class 5 to Air Brakes to Class 1. thanks again Seif !
Hi Seif - that is a awesome news. Thank you for letting us know, and you are most welcome. And we're happy to hear we could help out. Hi Captain G - thank you for your comment and valuable information. Have a look at this video to start: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZFi957GaxpU.html&list=PL0x-bChcUvwG2bSWReQWnk9Tm92L7WN_O As well, the CDL airbrake course is 30% off with "youtube30" coupon at www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-cdl-air-brakes-course, and you can ask me for as much clarification and explanation as you need. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Captain G - 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 !!! AGREED !!! But still good info to know though.... First time EVER that I had to play a video @ .75 playback speed (on some parts) as opposed to the 1.25 due to most vids where people SPEAK TOO SLOWLY, and TAKE FOREVER to get to the point... 😂😂😂 I’m getting back on the truck due to slow biz with Uber in LA due to the Coronavirus and needed this refresher. THANK YOU @Smart Drive Test for the thorough tutorial. ✝️🙏🏾
Hi Sajid R - And you are most welcome. We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Charles - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. We are happy to hear the information was beneficial. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
The moment you pass your test, you'll do barely any of this again. Sure you'll still do a pretrip but this level of it, in the years I've been driving... Not at the level that is required for the licensing test.
Hi Driven home - Thank you for your query. 80 psi is the absolute minimum according to regulations that the governor must return the compressor to the load phase. Thus, if you let the air pressure go lower, you're not within the parameters of the required test. All the best, Chers Rick
Thank you. Newbie here in Quesnel. Originally the videos seemed to be in a foreign language. After I watched a few of your videos a million times it began to make sense. I was the first person in Q to receive a Class 1 learners permit after MELT came into effect. Everyone in Service BC cheered. I believe it was all thanks to you and your videos. Thank you.
Hi Fiona Frank - Congratulations my friend. We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Outstanding video! Excellent presentation, complete and concise instructions and information. I was confident about my knowledge test, apprehensive about the pre-trip test, happy to say I passed today. After watching the video I had my mantras; "Secure, not damaged, not leaking " and "5 pressure tests, two tug tests. Governor in/out, low air warning, pressure up time, auto spring brakes, leak test. Spring break tug, service break tug." That was an easy way to make sure I didn't miss any tests and made it easy to remember what's related to each. One thing extra I had to do; I had to manually adjust one of the brakes for pushrod travel, they were all good so had to adjust one pushrod out of tolerance then fix and measure by prybar. Thanks for this video, you can bet I'm going to take in all the rest of your videos. Very valuable, very generous of you to share.
Hi Chris McNally - Apologies for the late response. You are correct my friend. Parking brake tug test and service brake response test. You're testing that the brakes both apply and release. All the best, Cheers Rick
Which one is important and most demanding in the market when we talk about CDL License 1) Automatic Transmission License or 2) Manual Transmission License???
Yes, getting your air brakes is a lot of bureaucracy and number. But as someone said to me years ago: "What do I want?" For you, I suspect it's your CDL license. This e-book may simplify things for you: www.smartdrivetest.com/airbrakes-cdl-rv/air-brakes-explained-simply Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick
One thing I've always wondered, is the scale on these gauges. Is it really enough to differentiate a 3, 4, 6 psi drop? I mean, the increments on the gauge are 25 psi
jack kelley - great question. You’re right, it’s not. But we guesstimate as best as we can to satisfy the authorities for the purposes of the test. All the best, Cheers Rick
You did a great job. But remember to tell the people who’s watching the first thing you do is when you get in the cab is to put on your seatbelt!! Because it’s an automatic failure if you don’t have it on when you do your in cab air brake test. Other than that the great job.
I think I'm starting to get this airbrake business. I'm a 64 year old woman and have just been hired by the city to drive their buses and they are training me. They want me and I'm old I can't believe it Thanks
Hi earthminus10 - Thank you for your comment. And you inspire others my friend. You might consider the air brake manual over at our website: www.smartdrivetest.com Keep us informed of your progress. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
PSI stands for pounds per square inch my friend. It's not hard to learn. There's a lot of numbers and valves to memorize. There isn't a lot of math. This resource may help: www.smartdrivetest.com/airbrakes-cdl-rv/air-brakes-explained-simply Drop us a note if you have further questions. All the best, Cheers Rick
Here's the steps for Ontario from a Z course done at a college. Practical test was done on a dump truck. (Remember to narrate to the examiner what and why it is what you are doing) Step 1 Brake Adjustment Test *Chock wheels *Release tractor brakes (push in yellow button) *Ensure air pressure is between 90 & 100psi *Shut engine off *Measure from brake chamber to center of the clevis pin and not distance *Apply service brakes using brake stick *Ensure air pressure is between 90 & 100psi *Take second measurement & note the difference *Tell the examiner the distance of travel *Front brakes are 16 short with an adjustment limit of 1 3/4" adjustment limit (brake type is vehicle specific) *Rear brakes are 30 short with and adjustment limit of 2 inches (brake type is vehicle specific) *If any of the brakes exceed their adjustment limit, the truck will be out of service *Drain the air tanks (wet tank first) looks for moisture, debris and that the valves reseal *If the valves don't reseal, the truck is out of service Step 2 Governor Cut In Test (80 psi) *Start truck *Fan Brakes down to 80 psi and watch for the pressure to rise *If the pressure doesn't rise, the truck is out of service Step 3 Low Air Warning Test (55 psi) *Fan the brakes until warning light and buzzer come on and note the pressure *If the warning light and buzzer don't activate by 55 psi, the truck is out of service Step 4 Compressor check test *With engine revving between 600 and 900 RPM, time how long it takes to build from 85 to 100psi *If it doesn't build in less the 2 minutes, the truck is out of service Step 5 Governor cut out test *Listen for the air dryer to exhaust *If the governor doesn't cut out between 100 and 135 psi, the truck is out of service Step 6 Air Leak Test *Shut off engine *Apply brake pedal and note the brake pressure *Listen for audible air leaks *Time for 1 minute and note air pressure before releasing the brakes *Cannot lose more then 3 psi in 1 minute or the truck is out of service Step 7 Spring Brake Application Test *Apply truck spring brakes (pull yellow button) and hear them apply *If you don't hear the spring brakes apply, the truck is out of service *If unsure the spring brakes are holding, you should do a tug test Tug Test *Remove wheel chocks *Apply power with the spring brakes applied (yellow button out) *If brakes don't hold, the truck is out of service Speech If I found any defect during these 7 steps, I would fill out inspection book and report to owner. If truck is out of service, it is illegal to drive.
Hi Dino - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and great information. Do you have any job prospects lined up my friend? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
When I was practicing for the test I was told always turn the key back on before you begin the leak down tests, the low air warning and low air spring brake apply or they will fail you because the audible and lights will not happen
Hi TheMuddyOne - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. Yes, unfortunately if you go too fast, the air pressure will drop below the 55 or 60psi where you need to test the low-air warning and the test becomes void. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Is this for every state including Illinois ? I’ve been testing myself on the book portion with a cta test etc and been getting into the 80-90% so will be ready for the actual test here soon after I get permit ....I’ve been farming and driving for awhile now but never was required to have a cdl it’ll help further my driving career
Not to be an ass. But check the brand and model as to whether or not you supresse the clutch when firing up. I know some Mack units even newer ones should not have the clutch supressed when firing up the unit. It can be damaging I was told this by a few Mack dealers/shops. That said, great video.
Hi TruckStopTV - Apologies for the late response. Nope, not being an ass my friend. I would be curious to know why they think that it would cause damage - you're just separating the engine from the drive train via the clutch. But you're right, not all models require you to push in the clutch to fire up the engine. And for the ole-timer's like me, it's a pain in the butt anyway to push in the clutch. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thanks Rick ! You're video's are the best ! You're explanations and descriptions are clear and concise! A great resource for anyone learning and probably many existing Commercial drivers should watch this get a refresher on what the requirements actually are!

Great Air brake video, very practical and very understandable details for use on class B Pre trip school bus inspection. I’m a driver trainer and this will be a very helpful training video. Here in Rochester NY we just got switched over to the standard DOT class A & B Pre trip inspection, under the hood, a little bit of under the bus, tug test ect. You make it simple, and put the important need to know facts up front.I just want to say THANK YOU
Hi Wilbur Mc Loud - thank you for your comment and compliment. And you are most welcome. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best with the new curriculum, Cheers Rick

Thank you for this video...You make prefect sense in pointing out all required components for any and all circle checks, explaining requirements anywhere in North America. I like the way you approached the importance on air brakes in making this video with quick practical and very understandable details for air brake trucks. I hope to see other important facts to keep me refreshed and safer on the roads. There's power in knowledge
Hi Heidi B - thank your for your lovely comment and praise. I happy to hear that the video were helpful and understandable. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Great info for someone who has been away from trucking for 12 years. I would highly recommend watching these informative videos before getting behind the wheel. Thank you!

Hi Mauricio Calvo - you are most welcome. There are subtitles on the video. Was there a certain language you wanted? Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick, Great video! As an Air brake instructor here in Ontario we don't do the 50psi to 90psi test for build-up but only test 85psi to 100psi. just wondering what the differences are in other provinces and states. is there a website with that info? Thanks again. -Rob
Hi Robert den Broeder - Thank you for your comment. And no, there isn't a website - you have to go through the individual manuals. Some of the other provinces and states are going the 85-100psi in 45s with the engine at flat idle too. I think it's SK--maybe QC too--that's added that the trailer air supply must shut off air to the trailer above 50psi. And then the normal - parking brake applies the emergency brakes between 20 and 45psi. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Manitoba does the Brake Application or "Applied Application" that requires that a person, stand on the brakes while you check the push rod travel "from a predetermined point" that is either a fixed marker like a plastic tie or marked with a piece of chalk. There are other differences between provinces. As there are so many differences, any generic tutorial is going to give wrong numbers for other jurisdictions. If someone from one of the other jurisdictions, happens to watch this video first, they could be learning the wrong numbers. My comment is that this video like most youtube videos tend to be far to fast with the rate of speech and absent pauses to allow viewers to absorb the information.
What happens if you do a pre trip and air Compressor ..air brake test passes in pre trip but half way through the day the air compressor becomes faulty? Would a driver get a ticket for a major defect or can this be fought in court ? Thanks
Hi I’m having an issue I need to know how to demonstrate air leakage test in a MTA bus, I know the PSI no more than 10 psi and no more than 2 psi, to test I need to hold the service break for one min, I’m still confused
These air brake (systems) videos have helped me so much understanding this all.... Im from vernon BC and am at OC'Kelowna campus taking my HD foundations program right now. THANK YOU
Hi Natasha Waack - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. We're happy to hear we could help out. You're going to do awesome on your program there. Is that program the heavy equipment one? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
i got shit for doing it in this order I was told I have to start with shutting the vehical off and putting the key in start and do the air loss check first then proceed to the low warning by pumping brakes
Hi brian pugh - Thank you for your comment. Where are you taking your air brakes? Yes, unfortunately, there are some instructors that are inflexible in the order that these 5 tests are done. Sorry to hear about your experience. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Ontario Canada and I thought I knew it all lol. I did all the checks correct but was never told the DOT wants them done in a particular order that was a new one for me. Really makes no sense to me as long as you do them and do them correctly I don't know why u would fail because u did them in a different order. DOT makes stupid things up sometimes. cheers
Hi brian pugh - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. Unfortunately, some examiners are either unable or unwilling to be flexible on the order of the air brake test that are done in-cab with a CDL vehicle. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - you'll have a different examiner on the next attempt.
Hi d gronzega - We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
It does my friend. You can find the in-cab checklist here: www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-cdl-air-brakes-checklist Drop us a note if you have further questions. Cheers Rick
As an experienced driver, this fellow Rick at smart drive absolutely does the best of all and the CDL professor is a good teacher/lecturer and then if I were looking for a CDL school, well, Mr.Rick, you would most definitely have my business HOOVES DOWN ...thank you for doing these videos, even as a refresher for us diesel demon dummies. It's been my pleasure rick. I suppose, I'd like to see Rick go on camera and from start to finish do his pre- trip bumper to ICC bumper, incab then do it as if you were actually in an examiners presence ya know, then that's what I honestly feel you could package up and sell online, or as an online course..rick, let me know what ya think, lostcause in LaGrange,Ga...sept,18.
Hi Tom Johnson - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and excellent suggestion. And yes, that is one that I need to get into a course. I am going to put that on the list to get done before the end of the year. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best there in LaGrange, GA my friend, Cheers Rick
I'm sure this is a great video for Canadian students. However, it is so different for those of us in the US that if you follow this video to the letter you will fail. The pressure ranges are different, and the order in which you do the tests is close to the reverse. If you are from the US, I recommend that you look up a video from someone in the states.
What state are you in my friend? Despite an air brake system being almost the same on every truck in the United States, every driving school wants to do the pre-trip inspection differently, and each state has slightly different numbers...not much, but slightly different. Have a look here for this checklist that will help you with your in-cab air brake checks: www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-cdl-air-brakes-checklist Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Saqib Ishaqx - that is *_SUPER DUPER_* news! I have a question.... I have a 1984 Tandem grain truck that I purchased about a year ago, It has airbrakes... It has 2 tanks at the rear that have a drain valve each, and one tank under the cab by the right side fuel tank... The one by the fuel tank has 2 drain valves on it... I never seem to get any air out of the one. I've only ever got a little bit of water and some gunky stuff... Is that just the wet tank? The other valve works fine I get lots of air when I open it... The brakes and everything all seem to work just fine, and when i bought it I had to get an inspection done and nothing was said about it so I'm assuming it's normal.. Am I right to assume that or should I get it checked out? I would thank you kindly if you could answer my question... Thanks...
Hi TheFarmerfitz - Thank you for your comment. Usually when an air tank as two drain valves, it is 2 tanks created by a bulkhead. The way to find your wet tank is to pump to full pressure. Take note of the pressure on the gauges and then go out and drain each tank - one at a time. The tank that doesn't drop the needles is your wet tank because it doesn't have a pressure gauge. There is a possibility that the tank by the fuel was replaced and the person who did it didn't realized that it was 2 tanks, rather than one. That's only one possibility. The only other possibility is an emergency tank in the event of break down, but I've never encountered one of those. If you determine which tank is the wet tank, that might alleviate some of the mystery. However, if you have 3 tanks that are functioning, then your system--as you stated--should be working fine. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best for the holidays, Cheers Rick
Thanks for the reply... The one by the fuel tank as I said has 2 drain valves... is it possible that there is 2 compartments in one tank... On that tank, when I turn the tap on the rear drain valve I get the usual blast of air, and usually some moisture... The other one I have only ever had a little dribble of water but no air at all..... The other two tanks I do the same and I get the usual blast of air with a bit of moisture(depending on how long it's been since draining).... It's probably like you said...

Couple of things you can do my friend: turn on closed captions; or slow the video down in the RU-vid settings there. Glad we could help out my friend. This resource might help too: www.smartdrivetest.com/airbrakes-cdl-rv/air-brakes-explained-simply Drop us a note if you have questions. Cheers Rick
Hi sugarsdaddy1 - Thank you for your query. You can do either my friend - you can do it from below or you can raise the box. My only issue with raising the box is that the examiner may see it as a safety issue and would not want you between the raised box and the frame. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Frank Panico - it is my friend. However, the "diesel bears" use the applied stroke method, so be sure your brakes are in adjustment before going over the scales here. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Charles S I'm a retired city bus driver who now occasionally drives rented school buses for church advents in BC. On my city bus doing my pre-trip I was not required to crawl under the bus and check the distance of travel on the push rods. I have also talked to a manager of a school bus system and he indicated because of the auto slack adjusters he does not require his drivers to go under the bus and check rod travel. I have also watched several you tube videos and they don't show anyone going under the bus. Is manually doing a pry bar test a requirement on my routine pre-trip or is it just required when doing a driving test?
Hi 2010Canuck - Thank you for your comment and query. For the purposes of your road test, you will be required to go under the bus and check push rod travel. A automotive creeper is going to work best if you're on pavement or concrete. If you're on dirt it's going to be a little tougher. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hmm… here is the direct quote from my provinces licensing agency, “The practical test will include proper adjustment of a manual slack adjuster and a verbal explanation of the proper procedure for adjusting an automatic slack adjuster”. What does the verbal explanation of the procedure actually consist of? I’m quite confused. Appreciate the videos and thanks for everything!
Hi Ali choudhry - Thank you for your comment. You're going to do awesome. Remember to breath; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi question : @ min 16:00 you say for the leak test you say "its holding at 100 lbs per sq inch". your "brake tractor gauge" the needle shows about 62 psi brake application, no? why do you say "it's holding at 100 psi " your video showed primary and secondary tank gauges showed 125 psi ( are we to monitor the "Brake Trctr" gauge dropping , or just the primary AND secondary tanks showing a drop ?) Thanks for the video
Hmm, my state CDL manual says to turn the engine off just before you start the test of the low air pressure warning signal. That would seem to make more sense because the air compressor is trying to replenish the air pressure while the engine is running.
Hi Steven Litvintchouk - Thank you for your comment. And you are correct my friend. On most air brake inspections, after you do the low air warning test, you shut the engine off to do the emergency brake test.
