How to do the Impulse Pattern using slip.

My Impulse pieces use raised slip dots on an angled/vertical surface of a pot to break the flow of a glaze.
The real trick to these is in the slip application, which is largely down to the thickness of the slip.
The glazes shown at the end are all on glazy, except Borealis - glazy.org/u/oldforgecreations...

Check out my glazing videos for guides on how I apply the glazes, the idea is very similar to the Pebble/Peacock Eye pieces.

can someone please explain how the colour runs down from each dot? my understanding is that the dots would be fired before glaze is applied, and therefore i wouldnt expect the colour to run?

I think it's because the bisque firing doesn't fully vitrify the clay, but the glaze firing does; so when you glaze fire, the oxides can still mix and fuse with the glaze.

for how long do you leave it dry after applying slip and before the first firing? it looks so good!

Thank you for this video, super informative. Can’t wait to see your other new videos. What are your thoughts about applying the slip on leather hard/bone dry vs after the first firing?

I think I do touch on it in the video, but if you're using straightforward slip then it will just fall off bisqueware as it dries. If you're using a slip formulated to apply to bisqueware, I still wouldn't do it that way if I didn't have to as the glaze application could rehydrate the slip and have it bleed into the glaze, but it should work.

@@OldForgeCreations thank you for getting back to me. I must have missed that, appreciate you taking the time to put it in this comment as well!

If you don't have a syringe, can you apply the slip with dotters, like I do with acrylic paints?

Do you make custom Glazes? or can you get this effect with a commercial glaze? Do you have a video on home-made glaze making if that's applicable here?

Did you fire after adding the beads and then glaze and refire?

Hi! So you are firing this now and apply the glaze before the second firing? Or do you apply the glaze straight away and fire it only once?
@OldForgeCreations
@OldForgeCreations 2 года назад
The former, so this is added before the bisque firing and the glaze is applied afterwards

I make it. I'll do a video next time I'm mixing some, but in the meantime here's a blog post of the process: www.oldforgecreations.co.uk/blog/making-slip-from-clay-trimmings

Do sharp peaks mean it's too thick or too thin?
@OldForgeCreations
@OldForgeCreations 4 месяца назад
Thick. The less water you add, the more it can hold its structure and form sharp peaks. A wetter mix will naturally round off when applied, and an even wetter mix will shrink down to form a concave dimple in the middle as the water is absorbed
