Marcelo Garcia talks with Stephan Kesting about how to set up and execute the North South choke. Get a free book about how to start BJJ at www.grapplearts...
Stephan says [ calmly] that he's been "working on this move for about four or five years and is now getting some success." That's a lesson to us all to have humility AND to not give up on a move because it doesn't work for a while, but to persevere.
I watched this a long time ago and started to test it, with success. Then when I would meet a challenge doing it, I'd come back and watch it again and find a solution and go back to it and reapply. This has become my highest percentage finish against every level, including black belt. If I can get a steady side control, I can make this work quite often. Thank you sir.
Thank you for your comment. I am a purple belt and I have been trying this move since blue belt. I can never make it work. Maybe 2 or 3 times in my life and idk if the guy just let me. Your comment is encouraging
@@TakedownBreakdown took me a decent few years to get good at this. key is in the setup and making sure the arm isnt going to be able to block you or push your head. readjusting their head is easy with the way he explained in the video. hope youve got it by now
@@prandz420 thank you for your input. I have had more success, but only against white belts. I get stuck sometimes trying to readjust their head using my body/ribs. I have improved quite a bit though
@@TakedownBreakdown it will click one day man aha. Im a purple belt too and i worked on it from white belt and i could never get it and then suddenly it just started working for me. If the setup isnt perfect i usually give up and try again since people leave themselves exposed for the choke so often in side control
I agree that the audio is a little fuzzy - it was shot guerilla style after a class. Hopefully the quality of the information makes up for the deficiencies in the audio. If we'd been in studio like for my DVDs then we would've been using boom microphones, etc.
The audio is fine! I am not distracted by minor background stuff-- here in my office where I'm supposedly "working" (haha) or in MG's academy :) I'm just enjoying the excellent instruction. Please keep it coming. And thank you both.
This is a really nice video. MG speaks softly, so a little hard to hear at some points, but definitely audible. I really like the guerrilla, impromptu feel of it. The North-South choke has become a favorite of mine, so it is far from new material for me, but I found the little details, especially about the set up very valuable. Please keep these videos coming. The are much appreciated.
This helped me SO MUCH!! My north south choked sucked big time, but i always come in the position to do it. But now i understand the choke and the technique to finish it. Marcelo is jst e genius!
I love how Marcellos presence makes everyone nervous, so nervous that Stephen tries to strangle himself at 1:25 haha, happens in a lot of other videos also
@maofas It's funny you should say that because i did start off with Judo. I have trained Judo for 7 straight years. i have only made the transition to BJJ 2 years ago. I love BJJ and i love even more the fact that Judo compliments BJJ very well.
Thanks very much for this video! Been trying to fit this into my game. Managed to pull it off once or twice too :-) Was struggling with the chin though so I'm glad I re-watched this and you asked about it for me! :D
@kanguesso If you're a poor college student, do Judo. It's usually very affordable (your college might even have a Judo club) and the groundwork is extremely similar to BJJ, it just usually doesn't get as advanced due to time limits on the ground. If you switch to BJJ later the skills you learn will transfer over.
Stephan, you should have a trainingparter with you for interviews like this, would be great to have someone to show techniques on while explaining. Awesome vid anyways :)
I am in BJJ Heaven! What could be better than Kesting getting Marcello to explain his moves. I you two honestly need to collaborate on putting together a basic series with him explaining the moves and you then brake the moves down in to chunks and narrating rolls with Marcelo applying the moves in sparring. ENCORE... ENCORE... MORE....MORE!!!!
Does Marcelo bring in BB to do a seminar at his place? Seems like he does from time to time which really shows what a cool dude he is. Seriously, if you have Marcelo Garcia as your trainer, that's the best anyone could do. :)
+Big Scottius its not the movement thats the correlation to chess its the application of game theory and anticipating your opponents actions and reactions coaxing specific actions and reactions from your opponents setting traps and bait and even allowing your opponents to beat themselves to "give" you the win. although this also can be applied universally to any game (thus the name game theory) it is particularly deep and complex in both chess and jiu jitsu and more than most "games" chess and jiujitsu are both often won several "movements" in advance.
Chess is actually a great comparison. In fighting you must think like a computer, you need about 5 different ideas in your head every 2 seconds. As a gamer, I'm really lucky. I've been gaming since I was 4. Well, that's given me the ability to think before I do anything. Even when I play the UFC game I see the person doing something and about 5 different counters come to mind. When I'm sparring, it's the same. I'm always a few steps ahead. They don't need to work everytime, they just need to be there. But by no means am I anyone special, far from it, hell I'm probably the least talented guy I've ever rolled with, but to me personally, drilling something every single day makes you good.
np man.. its one of my favorite techniques.. and theres a lot of set ups people never see either.. its a nasty choke if u can get it.. heres one... you have your guy in side mount and the guy reaches with his other arm to defend the americana grab around his neck with the arm that isnt under his.. drop your inside should to the floor trappin his arm there, bring your body south and he will go out or tap.. its a super tight choke
In 6:10 you can make the same choke. It s like an arm triangle but inverted. You can chocke also in this way pushing with your body his arm through his head. You take arm and neck, not only neck.
He was showing how to use it on a bigger stronger person and if some's much bigger arm in chokes are hard to finish. So in a way against a bigger guy you lose the position. I'm a big fan of the reverse arm triangle also, but it can hard to hit on a really strong person. I'm not a big strong guy so I don't use it on bigger dudes I don't got the power hit it if they are not tried when they're bigger. Great tech knowledge tho for knowing the name of that. :)
Hey Stephan, in Gi I keep ending up in a North South position with higher belts and usually bigger guys. Mostly happens when I try to escape side control and then end up getting a face full of their chest. Do you have any tips or videos you have done or could do on how to escape as the bottom person in a North South position?
@kanguesso Yes sir, but everything is more expensive in NYC. I am sure that his location is not cheap to rent and maintain. With cost of living and so on, the "NYC $220" is probably comparable to $125 in small markets.
"Unless....he does this...then I counter like this, but then if he does this, I counter the counter, and if he then stops me with this, I just do this and then I choke him" lol
@migraine516 Yes, but when you're known as the "Judo guy", they simply pull guard to neutralize your takedown ability unless the instructor specifically requires that no one pulls guard when we start rolling from the stand up position.
@jonnyv1nj yes altho It can be done with the arm in.. all it is is an arm triangle choke from north south.. dont understand why marcelo didnt sho that and just told u to lose position.. the arm in submission is actually called the reverse arm triangle choke.. I use it all the time
I LOVE this choke! I used it once, but the guy had his near-side arm between my ribs and his neck. I dropped my hips and went into N/S position anyway, while dropping my shoulder into the opposite side of his neck. I ended-up doing a neck crank, while at the same time choking him, kinda like an arm triangle. We're both white belts, so it might've been dumb luck. What do you think?
@StephanKesting I think you might try keeping a couple dynamic microphones around. I know they kinda cost a lot, but way cheaper than condenser mics. The camera mic picks up all the sound around it, but dynamic mics have a limited range of sensitivity that naturally cuts-out a lot of the sound. They'd be a lot less expensive than your boom mic, I can tell you that much. Just a suggestion. Your videos are still off da hook! Thanks Stephan!
When I train this, at my gym. I will punch the face to get the chin through. I also get my chest lower and farther back as possible. And if the guy hasn't tapped, I will push on his shoulder with my other hand. It increases the pain dramatically. I have drilled this many times. And it does work in sparring. But I have never used it in the street, or work as a doorman. As that is why I train, and I only train things that are of use in the street or for controlling customers.
I know this is a year old comment. Sorry. But can you clarify why you wouldn't use this in street or subduing customers? For street, it seems like its leaves you relatively untangled in case you needed to get up to your feet. For customers (im assuming you mean bouncing) it seems like a good control position. Having never been in a street fight or have had to bounce, im only going by gym time. So please excuse any ignorance. Thanks!
Don't go too deep on the setup. Who l woulda thought? Blown away, as usual. It's like Marcelo had three extra lifetimes worth of practice. The man is like a 500TB hard drive of knowledge.
@DBKK I am just a poor collage student like many others who love BJJ. Between monthly rent, utility bills, car note, cell phone bills and college books, $220 Bucks isn't peanuts. I wish it were, but it isn't.
The choke comes mainly from the hips and not the muscles. so my advice would be to find a buddy and drill it without flexing your arms, eventually you will find the sweet spot.
@DBKK Funny thing is, people keep telling me that it is NY and that is why it is expensive, I live in Philly and most of the good schools in my area charge about as much as Garcia does. Most schools want to charge you anywhere from $195 to $210/moth. How do you justify that?
@Friendlynice It's expensive my friend. He charges $220/month for a 1 year contract. A two week pass for $150.00 and a one month pass for $235. That is one problem i have with BJJ. It feels like it is an exclusive golf club. It should really be more accessible to the average person so that the sport can really grow and explode. Even UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo said he wanted to start his fighting career as a BJJ practitioner but he couldn't afford it. Are you serious?
kids have to get through yellow orange and green belt before they go on to blue just like any other martial art i just said i trained bjj as a kid and now i train judo. also if youre going to call anyone a liar, you should do it in a language you understand and can speak.
well i wouldnt say that none of it is street applicable but the majority of what hes teaching is for use in bjj competition. the thing about the manouvers u mentioned is that they are all really easy to counter, and that is all stuff u learn before your a blue belt..this video is more of a specific teqnique to teach you different ways to get into this position for the choke. if u jus look up street self defence with jiu-jitsu im sure u will find a bunch of videos to deal with whatu mentioned.
there is a yellow belt. students who are under the age of 16 can not get a blue belt. so they move up to yellow and then one other color and they stay at that belt level until they hit 16 where they can try to get blue belt
Is there any rules to these that do not allow striking or hitting when it goes into a submission contest? Just wondering, because I see a lot of way to get out of any of those choke with strike making it easier and without taking a bit more like a tug of war.
