+pine trees Do you have a violin teacher? Or had one in the past? Because if you are holding your violin incorrectly or your left hand posture is incorrect (bending the wrist) you will not likely be able to do vibrato. Your hand should be relaxed at all times.

+Lorienel cruz Then keep at it. Vibrato is hard and really not as easy as some people might think. Just concentrate on rolling only the fingertip as that might help and just let everything else work naturally. Dont try and make the wrist move, only roll the tip of the finger.
@loriedory
@loriedory 8 лет назад
thank you! I'll keep that in my mind. :)

My private teacher stated that first to just move fingers up and down and move your whole hand up the fingerboard. Then practice in third or 4th position so your elbow won't move, just your wrist. Always start your vibrato going backward towards the scroll.

I found the rolling from one edge of your fingernail to the other very helpful, but I was really at a loss about what to do with the thumb. After watching very carefully I was able to figure out that the placement of the thumb directly under the finger board gives the support for the rolling action. As you say, I am a work in progress. Bravo for your video!
@jb9652
@jb9652 2 года назад
I recommend watching Hilary Hahn play - she does amazing things with her thumb! It was from her that I discovered quite how important the thumb is. One of the slow motion RU-vid vibrato videos has a clip of her playing (towards the end IIRC).

Whilst I sort of agree, I disagree at the same time. All students who have tried vibrato too early have very little success as its too soon and the more they shake, the less control they have at this stage over the instrument which is why one should wait. When students have been playing well over a year or two, there is no shaking. This is coming from 17 years of teaching and of course its MY opinion and NOT meant to be controversial or upset or disagree/argue with anyone.

I‘ve been playing the violin for 13 years now (I‘m 19) and I did fake vibrato the whole time. I just didn‘t spend time on practicing my vibrato. Every time I tried to do wrist vibrato I became frustrated and gave up. Now I want to join a college orchestra and I will have to do a foreplay (it’s next week...) And as I will play Sicilienne by M.T. von Paradis I want to finally learn how to vibrato correctly and play this piece the way it should. I watched your video today and practised the vibrato for an hour straight afterwards. I really feel like my fingers finally know what to do!! It‘s not perfect yet - but it made click and I‘m positive I‘ll nail it till next week. Thank you so much for this video!!!

@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 9 лет назад
+cutelilly1000vedios Hav you been constantly trying vibrato throughout those 4 years? I dont mean a bit here and a bit there, constantly, each day and each time you play? If the answer is yes and you still cant do it, then perhaps its time to see a teacher, if the answer is no, then vibrato is something that MUST be practised daily and constantly, not on and off, here and there. That could be the reason its not clicked for you yet.

I might suggest that if you want to move forward with this, it may well be worth having a one-off lesson with someone local or online etc just to help sort this out and move on. I do offer Skype lessons at $40 per 30 minutes if that helps, or try to find someone local to you, or a violin friend who can help.

I think the best advice Alison has is, "Keep at it," That can be said of violin as a whole, I am approaching two years and I still bow unwanted strings and don't get my fingers down fast enough some times, but I am not giving up. All the other videos stress a flattening of the top joint of the finger which is, I find, impossible given that the fingers are aligned side by side on the fingerboard. Miranda Clark I only tried the guitar and even I know it has a vibrato. On electric guitar you can do it in 2 ways... the tremolo or also called a whammy bar.. or pulling the strings on the neck ;) And one more thing.. vibrato on guitar is very bad for your strings if you don't do it right.
@TonyNL87
@TonyNL87 9 лет назад
***** that's what I said ;) if you don't use the vibrato (whammy bar) the right way it's bad for your strings. So if you do if you do it right it isn't a problem.

This lesson works for me . Where most other vibrato tutorials I've seen focus on the wrist motion, I like how this one focuses on the finger 'roll' - the wrist motion does naturally follow. Great tips!

I'm great at cello vibrato, so I think that's why it's a struggle for me to get the hand movement correct for viola vibrato. It is pretty different, and my hand keeps wanting to do vibrato for cello. Stop it hand!

Same. I learned to play cello at school and just picked up on violin 3 months ago. I'm in 7th grsde and we are playing grade 2.5 and 3. I can play the violin version and cello version but it doesn't sound as nice without vibrato that the other kids can do.

Before the internet, only good violinist teacher can instruct about vibrato. I am 70 years old. I had 2 violin teachers and one viola teacher. Any of them gave me instructions how to do vibrato. For that by my self I began to use all arm vibrato. Anyway, I recommend all teachers to teach how to do it. In spite of the annoying, teachers need to supervise carefully how students are doing vibrato for correct use. Thank you to this violin teacher. I suggest to show all the arm in the screen. Thank you.

I played all through elementary and high school. In all that time I wasn't taught vibrato. I wasn't even told what it was called. Every now and then I pick up the violin to play, and wished I knew how to do it. Last night, while researching every violin term, I came upon it. Thank you for this video (and for others who have made similar ones). I

for those of you who learned this, my tips is don't give up easily, keep practicing because i've only learned violin for about 1 week and i can perfectly do the vibrato only in one day after watching this video (with middle finger, haven't practicing with other fingers) so in total i only need 8 days to learn to play a song with violin plus learn vibrato. i do have guitar basic for five years, tho, maybe it helps me to master vibrato, even though i'm new to violin. just practice it regularly, guys! =)

I figured this would be easy coming from a background of 19 years playing guitar... oh how wrong was I :P These are definitely muscles being used in completely new ways for me. I even do guitar vibrato sometimes on multiple strings at the same time, and even that was no preparation at all for violin vibrato. So, practice practice practice :)

So I know it's way too soon. I have owned and played a violin for a week now. And just you slowing it down has helped sooo much. I was confused, because it looks like you were hammering. But you kept saying rolling lol and rolling you are. But watching it all slowly play out. I'm already starting to get the grasp it. You have high dexterity and graceful wrist. It has been a workout for me, thank you. 😂

I've been playing guitar for 30+ years. I can play as well as a fish can swim, or a bird can fly. So I've picked up the violin and I feel like I should have started decades ago. I love this instrument! I was able to get vibrato on my second or third try. I treated it like I was hammering a trill riff, but without lifting my finger from the string. Works like a charm. I did notice that my fingertip does rock a little, but my wrist does not move. In fact, I don't think wrist movement is necessary and is probably counter productive.

Good video. As an adult beginner, I also struggled for a long time. I started with wrist vibrato, but would get violin shake, and wrist not moving smoothly, first joints of fingers hardly moving, etc. Then progress stagnated. If you are the same, I suggest trying arm vibrato, & persevere with it for six months. Initially it feels harder, takes more energy, harder to keep your thumb in same place, & plenty of violin shake. Whats it does is forces the first joints of all fingers to move, the wrist to move slightly, the thumb to be kept in same place, & all arm/hand joints will be learning to minimise violin shake. But when you return to wrist vibrato, it will be much easier. You must be patient & stick with it, sometimes you have to attack a problem from a different angle. For some, vibrato comes alot easier, others like me, have to try a different approach. Also, as a bonus, you'll have two vibrato techniques which you can use depending on the sound you want. :)

you DONT have to learn vibrato , its not something to learn . When you start singing with your violin and be emotional it comes naturally. If you do vibrato just because your teacher says it is just annoying to hear you playing . I have been playing the violin for 7 years and just last year I started doing vibrato without learning or practicing vibrato at all . Just sing and it will come naturally .

Is it better to have a shoulder rest to do vibrato cuz I dont have one and wen I try doing vibrato either the violin or the bow will shake and it doesn't really sound good.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
Bianca Benavides The violin shakes most likely because you are attempting it too soon. I would say on average you need to have been playing about a year before you try it. You need to let the basics settle in and even though you may 'feel' like you have the basics down, you need to let you body be secure totally with them and progress through time and that usually takes a year. You a) dont need vibrato in the early stages of learning and b) it will cause you far more problems if you do it too soon. Of course, this is MY opinion on the subject.....

Bianca Benavides well then you need to stick at it! It will take forever, but you will get there. its not an overnight thing or something you will get in 2 weeks, but months. Each time you stop trying it, you put yourself back, so you must keep at it and it will eventually come! Work through the rubbish sound (lol) and soon it will sound wonderful!

You need a shoulder est to support the violin and to hold it correctly so it doesnt fall off of your shoulder. And you need to keep preacficing and try to keep the bow strait. Pretend the bow and the string is a plus sign. Keep your bow from tilting and stay in the bow lane. Try not to move the bow up and down the string and keep your wrist strait. Your violin should sound MUCH clearer

I've been learning violin for like a month now...with unhealthy long breaks in between each practice. But I found out about vibrato and became super interested...yet every time I play the violin, my fingers feel like they're either falling off or bleeding. When I started learning vibrato, I feel like my fingers were getting chopped off and shoved into a blender. This caused me to seriously rethink life decisions about choosing one of the hardest string instruments ever as my second instrument in life.

@danielabisenius9858
@danielabisenius9858 7 лет назад
You don't. The earliest possible age should not be earlier than five and that only IF the child has the capacity of following instructions- that can be tested through other activities, not just music. What you can do at a very early age, although not 2.5 yrs, is to have them sing a lot. We must teach children to learn how to listen to music first, then put an instrument in their hands. Must develop very good ears first. Good luck🎻
