Captain Eric Sorensen shows you how to dock a twin outboard boat by backing into a slip. This critical boat-handling docking skill makes a lot of less-experienced skippers nervous, but with a little practice, you should be able to do it easily in all types of conditions like wind and current. We'll show you how to perform this maneuver both from the perspective of the helm as well as from above from drone footage. To read more, visit www.boatus.com/expert-advice/...

Thank you for refering to the trim out of the engines because it really makes it easier to handle.

Great technique. There is no rudder, technically the correct nautical term is to keep the wheel amidships. You were not controlling "headway", you were controlling "sternway". Just some minor but proper terms. The technique is excellent! Thanks.

Thanks for the video. If I am reverse docking on the other side, with dock on port side, then I would keep port engine in reverse, with stern tight to dock, while controlling the angle with starboard engine in forward, correct?
@boatus
@boatus 3 года назад
Thanks for the question, Eric. Potentially, yes, but we'd feel more comfortable if you said you'd put the starboard engine into gear "if need be" (as opposed to leaving it in forward) to control the boat's angle. Most of the time, this will mean bumping it in and out of gear as opposed to just leaving it in gear. And we should also note that if the boat swings around too far, you may need to oppose the engines the other way to get it lined back up. Remember, the angle of the boat and the need for application of power in either direction can change depending on how the docking maneuver goes, a gust of wind, and other variables.

Any place in Texas that rents out dual outboard engines to practice on?
@boatus
@boatus 3 года назад
The BoatUS Foundation doesn't have any powerboat handling courses scheduled in Texas at the moment, but I believe we've had some out there before. Keep an eye on www.boatus.org/on-water/ for possible upcoming training dates. Or see if there's a local boating school or dealer that offers boat handling courses. We're always looking to partner up with local marinas, boat clubs, or other groups to offer courses using Coast-Guard licensed captains.

What size/ model boat is this?
@boatus
@boatus 4 года назад
Hi Todd. I believe it's a Grady-White Freedom 307 dual console with twin Yamaha 350 V8s. At least that's the boat he had that I drove at the Annapolis Boat Show a few years back. It was a lovely ride with tight handling and some get up and go. I think WOT was 55 mph. If not the same 307, it's definitely a G-W Freedom.

when you say trim out is that up or down?
@boatus
@boatus Год назад
Excellent question, Gayle! "Trimming out" is when you raise the prop, i.e., move it away from the boat. "Trimming down" is bringing the propeller closer to the boat. If you want to learn more, you can view our video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KdDc0gz2_9g.html

@@boatus I have a triple engine center console, just learning.. but I assumed that having the motors trimmed all the way down when docking would provide the most control but you are saying up correct?
@boatus
@boatus Год назад
Having a triple-engine rig does change things a bit as compared to twins, and each setup is a bit different, so we can't give you a solid answer from afar. But, here's what we'd do in your situation: Take your boat into a calm, low-traffic area with little to no current and some solid object (a channel marker or buoy will work fine) that you can use as a point of reference. Then, try some experimentation. Start with the drives tucked all the way in, then move them up to neutral trim, then take them up a hair more. At each level, spend a few minutes maneuvering the boat around the point of reference. This is a good idea with any new boat and/or new captain, just to help get a feel for how the craft handles dockside. But in your particular case it will also give you the opportunity to play with the trim a bit, and see if/how much of a difference it makes. Hope this helps and good luck with the new boat!

Thanks for your comment, and we understand your concerns! Here's the link to our video on backing a single engine outboard: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OATyZA9Ooyc.html While there's not a lot of wind or current present, Eric does address this. We always recommend practicing boat-handling techniques in open water under different conditions so you can really get the feel for how it handles in a variety of situations before adding the stress of close quarters. You may also want to watch our video on mastering the pivot turn in a single engine outboard, which will also help you master this skill.

Not impressed by theses people......I did 20 years in the u.s. Coast Guard.....just pull in the dock...put out your rubber fenders...use them......people are afraid to to use them....they want to “look “professional “ look people “ if y’all don’t don’t do this stuff all the time...don’t think you can just attempt to try things that’s you are not use to.....like docking a boat is one of them! People......
@boatus

We absolutely agree that dropping fenders when docking is a great idea no matter what your experience. You never know how wind, current, or a neighbor boat might affect you on any given day. Thanks for the great reminder.
