Hi everyone!
I figured it was about time that I updated my video on how to dodge and burn in Photoshop! (And a general skin retouching tutorial.)
The last main video on dodging and burning I filmed was now nearly 4 years ago, so I wanted to do an updated video with a few more tips and tricks. I also feel that my skin retouching routine in Photoshop has shifted a little, so I wanted to focus on that a bit too.
Let me know if you want to see more beauty retouching tutorials! 😊

Kayleigh, this is a brilliantly simple dodge and burn technique. I’m going to move to this for my landscape work. I think it will be much more natural than HDR.

Beautiful!!! the best way to retouch skin, i prefer this by far over frequency separation. I started retouching your technique after watching some of your older videos. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

I like this WITH frequency separation. Do the texture on the texture layer, keeping it preserved, and all of the color changes on the blur layer. The combo will produce a unique quality.
@P.A80
@P.A80 Год назад
In this case you don't need to in my opinion as the model has a beautiful skin already and also the lighting is good, it would be pity to over do it, as the skin here looks 100% natural as it should look like anyways, in some different situation it would probably help the frequency separation.

Thank you for sharing your techniques. It's interesting and useful. Have you tried doing any of this in Capture One? There are dodging and burning tools there too. Do you find those to be less precise?
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
No worries Rick! Yes I have tried dodging and burning in Capture One too. It's another great alternative, but I think I just usually prefer Photoshop's interface and tools for this part of the retouching process. 🙂

which one is better for quality skin spot healing or healing brush ?
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
For quality, the healing brush usually works better as you have a bit more control with how it is applied to the image 🙂

Sometimes when you are dodging and burning, there is a slight color shift in those areas that you've d&b'd. Is there a "best" technique to fix that?
@DREZZYFILMS
@DREZZYFILMS Год назад
So my approach would probably be: after D&B is done, mask the skin and add it into a group, add a Hue adjustment layer or (curve if you're getting pink skin), adjust the hue for the skin. use the brush tool, set the hardness to 0, any size you like, opacity 100, flow between o and 5, click the layer mask next to hue and sat, background to black and start painting over those areas or part of the body where the color shifted, when done cmd+ I to invert the layer mask. Be gentle with it. change the blending mode accordingly maybe something like lighten etc.. hope that helps.
@haies09
@haies09 Год назад
Wouldn’t you do the clone softening before D&B?
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
No I prefer to do this at the end of the process as a finishing touch. Each to their own though, I just prefer this method as sometimes dodging and burning alone can remove some of that unwanted texture, whereas the clone stamp can appear a bit more destructive if used too much, so I always use that method very light handedly and as a final step. 🙂
@haies09
@haies09 Год назад
@@KayleighJune understandable, I was just thinking if it was before, then maybe the D&B process would be quicker 😊
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
@@haies09 It could potentially be an option depending on what you’re retouching! You could also use the standalone method of the clone stamp if it’s super basic skin work, (like for ecommerce imagery.) 😊

Why don't you use mixer brush tool for dodge and burn? Why the normal brush?
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
I don’t really think it’s necessary for dodge and burn, I personally prefer this method as I’ve found it gives me the most detail and control, but each to their own!
@tomaszbejnarowicz

mine says "your layer is empty" how can i fix that?
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
Hi Tomasz! Do you have the layer mask selected, (attached to the curves layers,) when you start to dodge and burn with the brush tool? When the healing tools are also used initially on a new blank layer, you have to ensure that the 'sample all layers' option is selected in the top toolbar. Hope that helps! :)

Wow, that’s a super long-winded way of setting up your dodge and burn layers. Do you not like the grey layer set to overlay and painting with b&w? That’s so much better way imho, since you don’t have to switch layers and it’s incredibly simple to press x to swap between b&w. Also, no mask is necessary.
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune Год назад
It’s the way I’ve always set them up and it’s a really common method. I personally don’t like to paint with the grey layer as I don’t believe it offers enough control and I prefer to have the option of utilising masks. But I do think the grey layer can still be a useful method depending on what you’re retouching. Plus each to their own. 🙂
@haies09
@haies09 Год назад
There is also scripts that let you assign keyboard shortcuts, to switch between layers, so you don’t have to move your mouse to the layers palette 😊
