Why I made this video: I feel there aren't a lot of tutorials on dj'ing bass music. especially niche things like Dubstep, Riddim, Tearout (all the bass heavy ones). So I wanted to create an in depth dive in on how I do these things in real time and as transparent as I can be.
NOTE: the hand cam is not from the stream, its something I recorded after so there are parts on the Double of Red Lips and Psycho that aren't exactly paired. along with the Rated R Double. but for the most part its 98% on point.
Track List:
1) GTA Red Lips (Skrillex Remix)
2) Moonboy x Ghastly - Psycho
3) Meduza - Lose Control (oddprophet edit)
4)Fitz - Bass Glitch
5) OOPH - ID
5) Polar Bear - ID
6) Excision x Wooli - Lockdown (MadReckless Remix)
7) Rated R - Blow

I see lots of dudes doubling with their lows both up. And even now after all of this time people still talk mad shit in sync but I utilize it a lot when I’m doing routines live! It really does help.
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Год назад
sync is the only way for doubles/triples/quads imo because if a kick transient is slightly off the whole thing is ruined (which is why i analyze all my tracks in rekordbox as well). no one cares about sync that's actually successful in the scene its just the people that want to project on others and make it seem like they are superior at doing a task. I asked protohype in an upcoming video what he thought and he said he could care less who uses it. your job is to entertain your crowd and you do that how you seem fit :)

Good stuff, over been DJing for 28 years, I still please bass and tech house, other genres as well. Although I don't play this genre, I still do a lot of doubling, but I'm usually leaving both tracks fully eqd and chipping back and forth, I see why with the l this genre you do what you do. It gives me lots of great ideas for my bass house mixes. Love seeing the over the top view, you can tell you know your equipment and when to eq and use the faders. Top notch

I'm a techno and house DJ and I have to say, mixing dubstep can be a challenge depending on the artist, subtronics seems to be one of the easiest to mix where artists that go all over the place like Nero are a super challenge. Excision isn't too bad but he doesn't have a ton of double drops in his songs and doesn't leave a ton of spacing, basically any dubstep artist who leaves a ton of spacing are the easiest to mix. Mixing is important as well making your own "VIPS" of sorts not this one after another stuff people seem to only be able to do because dubstep in general is just so chaotic.

Hey, man! I just want to say thank you so much for showing us how to step up; it helps a lot of us beginners get started. I do have a question regarding setting cue points. For example, I tend to set one of the cue points at the drop and another 8 bars before it. My question is, let's say there are lyrics before the drop such as "let's get reckless." Do you set the cue point on that lyric, or do you still place it at the drop? What do you recommend?

Video = Big pimpin... How long have you been dj'ing for?? I just bought the ddj rev 1 a few days ago (first controller) still tryna learn doubles (obviously) but they sound so mucky however the tip of filtering out one songs lows i think will be very helpful just don't know what songs to try it on.
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Год назад
I've been "dj'ing" since 2019, as far as doubling goes usually you always want them in the same key otherwise it won't mesh well. (not always but most the time. if you know music theory well then you can bend this rule.) Always when bringing a track in at a buildup switch the low ends during the build, otherwise they will get really muddy. when doubling/tripling/quad dropping always only have one sub at a time playing and cut the others. choose which you want to be most upfront and allow it to keep it's sub! hope that helps! and thanks for checking out the video!

How do you save your starting point when you load your songs . I keep trying to look that up and can’t figure it out . I understand you set the cue, and possibly hit memory , but the next time I load the track it just wants to start from the beginning anyway .. what am I doing wrong ? And just to be more clear , I have hot cues set and I can click them to start from where I want. But I want to know what you did, it saves time
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Год назад
By default you have a memory cue saved at the start of the track. You need to delete that one if you don’t want it to to start from the beginning (even if you have other memory cues set)

So I have a ddj400 I bought awhile back and wanted to learn. Anyways I stopped trying and started going to raves and ab to goto my first festival this Saturday. Anyways I’m trying to get back into it now that I have this love for the culture. I’ve got rekordbox and I use my SoundCloud for the music. Is there a better place to get these riddim, bass, etc. songs? Thanks!
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic 2 года назад
SoundCloud is a great resource because all the free DL you can find. Other than that, I get a lot of my music from producers. But if I want a song and I can’t find it for free on SC or hitting up the producer, then I’ll use beatport.. What you can also do if you are starting out. Is use RU-vid to MP3 sites and take songs from YT. HOWEVER these files are not loseless, which means if you play them on club speakers they will sound hollow and weak compared to others. So never use ripped files for live sets. (This is kind of a controversial topic, but if you are just using it to practice at home then buy the songs you want for your live sets, then I think it’s a good middle ground so you aren’t spending $100’s on songs just to learn)

How do you get dubstep tracks that aren’t ripped ? Songs from wooli or hol etc , don’t exist on most record pools. I’ve used djcity and crateconnect and both didn’t have a great selection of songs and neither a big selection to choose from in general . Both only had a single, to two pages. While other genres had upwards of 10-15 :/

@@wheystedmusic what if they are released songs? Would I have no choice but to use like, the SoundCloud option in serato to play most released dubstep songs ? Just cause like the record pools don’t have really a vast selection at all. I got dj city bro , they got but one maybe two subtronics songs 😩 but I haven’t been lookin to play unreleased , I mean that would be cool if I could get to know connections like that - just don’t know the ways. what’s the best way to find songs in the same key?
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Год назад
I actually don’t have any good info for that. Usually I just go crate digging (searching for new tunes from other producers, hyppedit, SoundCloud , etc) before a show, and analyze those new tracks in rekordbox and those will give you keys, and I’ll mix them accordingly
@yeln4tsmusic
@yeln4tsmusic Год назад
I use VDJ (I know, I know, not the best, but it’s what I’m comfortable with) and they have options to show the key of a track, not sure how it works for other softwares, but I’m pretty most if not all softwares have this option. Sometimes, the algorithm mistakenly gives the wrong key though, so you have to watch out for that. Most of the time, tracks that are a perfect fifth away from one another in key (C & G or F#m & C#m) tend to work well with one another. A lot of tracks in heavy dubstep, brostep, briddim, and riddim tend to be atonal, meaning there’s not really a discernible key after a certain point. I mix a lot of Minatory and Deathstep, and those tend to be atonal in a lot of places as well. Doubling in more melodic and harmonic forms of bass music like color bass, neoriddim, synth wave, downtempo, drumstep, DnB, etc requires a little knowledge on key matching in addition to what’s talked about in this video. I would recommend downloading a Circle of Fifths chart, that would help with an understanding of what keys match up. Hope this helps 😊.
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Год назад
@@yeln4tsmusic Rekordbox and Serato deff have key recognition in the software! i put mine in the circle of 5th but comes stock in just saying what key its in (example A# minor). One thing I wanted to touch base on about your comment is Dubstep tracks still pertain to their key in their drops. maybe their basses are slightly a tonal but your sub will always be tonal in any bass music. so it is important to mix in key for those as well (because once your out of the drop you want to make sure the musical elements are mixed together properly, or even double dropping tracks because usually their is something tonal in the drops like a sustain or something if the basses aren't.) Circle of fifths is goated tho! Great input! appreciate you commenting (also no one cares what you mix on, as long as your having fun that's what matters 😊)
