So, maybe you tried out the iTunes 10.5 beta, decided it wasn't for you, and wanted to downgrade iTunes back to the previous version. You were met with this dreadful iTunes Library.itl cannot be read error message in the process. This video shows you how to fix iTunes so that you can downgrade to a previous version.

LEGEND!! You made my day man. Didn't like iTunes 11 changed back to 10. Reinstalled older version but had issues so did a system restore and tried to repair it through control panel and nothing was working! Was getting pretty frustrated. Thankfully your method worked and I have my library back to normal with ratings and playlists and everything! Thanks a million!!!

Finally worked!! I didn't paste into the ORIGINAL Itunes folder, I always screw up 1 step, now I just have to wait for all files to finish transferring from google drive. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

thank you so much...had signed on, was updating version of itunes, while doing so was moving some photos around, lost/deleted some needed photos, itunes finished, restarted computer, did a system restore to find lost photos, then itunes gave me dreaded message...now it works again....whew! thanks so much! i need to check your clips more when i have issues!

Just wanted to say this worked perfect!! Thank you so much. I downgraded from iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7. (a.) I deleted iTunes 11.4 with app zapper. (b) downloaded iTunes 10.7. (c) downloaded pacifist and opened it up (d) Then dropped iTunes 10.7dmg file into pacifist (e) Then I followed your instructions here and it all the library was there. I made no back ups or anything. Thanks!!!

My iTunes had been kept up to date by automatic upgrades but for some reason gave the same error. I was on the latest version with updates and got the message. Using this strategy fixed it. Yay. Thank you.

"Like" is an understatement! I LOVE YOU MAN! This also worked to downgrade that abomination they call iTunes 11. I don't know what's up with apple. They fixed it until it broke. I don't like too much change all at once, and apparently, from all the controversy, a lot of people don't either. No more updates for me until I know they'll work for me.

WORKED! THANK YOU! Wasn't aware i downgraded. Wiped macbook and slowly putting things back as they were. Didn't want to "restore from backup" so dragged itunes library I saved on external. Got this terrible message, but your vid solved it it seems. Thanks big time. Now I have to figure out how to consolidate/prevent/get rid of duplicated playlists. Main problem fixed though!!! Yay!

I re-downloaded version 10.7 but when I try to install it, and I get to the "select a destination" screen I see the phrase "iTunes can't be installed on this disk. A newer version of iTunes is already installed." It's different than what happens in your youtube video. I can open iTunes but it's the dreaded version 11. I did all the prescribed steps - copying iTunes library folders and renaming .old etc. -- Everything as directed. Can you help?

After successfully deleting the wretched iTunes 11, and obtaining 10.7 I faced the problem of not having any of those files above located in my iTunes folder on my mac. I managed to locate them on a backup on my external hard drive. I then followed the same steps you outlined in this video and am still facing these problems. Any suggestions?! I really don't want to reset my computer entirely to the oriental settings from when it was first purchased nor do I want to search my time machine.

Hi Jeff, I upgraded to Lion and got the iTunes message. I followed your instructions but cannot access my music after opening iTunes. I can see the iTunes store but there is nothing in the Music or Movies folder. When I copied the most recent file from the Previous ITunes Libraries folder and renamed it I noticed another document "iTunes Library" with no file extension in the iTunes folder. Could this be the cause of the problem? Should I delete it?

What if you have multiple itl libraries? Do you change them all to old?

I followed all the steps on Mac Rumors, and in this RU-vid video. But I still get the message about having to download the newer version of iTunes....Any help is appreciated, as all my playlists and ratings are gone.

@aqworlddark893 On windows it's basically the same thing. Just go into the itunes libary folder and left click and hit "rename" then add the "Old" to the folder. Then go into a back up take off the date, rename again and add ".itl"

Can I go back to iTunes 7? I miss the clean look and borders of the grey and white grid opposed to the white cloud look. Also miss the intuitive functionality. I'm assuming I can't go that far back since I'm running Yosemite. Maybe there's a miracle solution I don't know about? Just want that old UI back...

So, I previously had deleted everything thanks to an apple thread and when i went to open it it said exactly what you just showed us in your video...but when i went to finder to find Ituneslibraryfolder i didn't have one. What do i do if i can't find one. i remember being told previously to delete everything related to iTunes so i know i probably don't have it. can i still open 10.7 if i don't have my previous file? I recently had 11.2

my iTunes 10.3 cannot be installed because there is already a newer version of iTunes installed (10.5 Beta). What should I do now? Deinstalling iTunes with AppZapper or something? Because I'm afraid AppZapper will delete the library files also... Thx!

but what happens if i have the 11 installed and i already added new files to the library? doesn't it mean , if i downgrade to an older itunes library the newly added files will be gone? how does it work?

I had done this and it worked great! But when I check for updates, iTunes says there is an update. So when I try to install the new update, "Software Update" opens up, checks for software, and then tells me my Mac is up to date. Thus, not allowing me to update iTunes. I have never had this problem before until I reinstalled 10.4 again and followed the steps on your video. Do you think it's something from this video that's causing that to happen? Please respond, thanks.

thanks for this helpful video. so, it's now jan 2013 and i want to downgrade to 10.5. do i still use the very last itunes library like you say, or do i have to go back several libraries to whichever was the one coinciding with 10.5? your help is appreciated!

HELP!!!! Long story short. I am trying to allow my wife to read an ibook I purchased on her new MacBook Air. Using something called Requiem to remove DRM on book. But apparently it can only remove the DRM if the version of iTunes is no later than 10.5.3. So I reverted to 10.5.3. Unfortunately, there are no versions of the library that were ever created with 10.5.3 since this is a new Mac. Is there any way at all to use 10.5.3? Everything we own is in the Cloud in one way or another. THX!!

I was going to give video a try as I HATE iTunes 11. I'm reluctant to do so because there are so many negative outcomes when reading the comments section. For 10 years Ive been the biggest pro Mac person on the planet. Jobs dies, new guy comes along & everything goes to hell FAST. I hate this newest iTunes so much I dont even have the words to express it. Could it BE any more user unfriendly? Literally no idea where my stuff is. Hate it in no less than 12 ways. Hate it. All my posts on the Apple forums have been deleted for being "off topic" just bec. theyre negative but theyve been appropriate. im so mad u cant imagine. Years of music, apps etc.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard: I just deleted iTunes 10.5 Beta (you have to stop iTunesHelper) and I installed iTunes 10.4, It just works. Everyting is in there.
