Clutch. Blip throttle. Increased rpm’s that come from throttle don’t make you go faster because clutch is pulled. Downshift into the lower gears while the rpm’s are high to match engine speed to transmission speed. Motorcycle doesn’t lunge and is happy. Did I get that right?

I was 20 and on my 4th stick shift car when I bought my first bike, although I had ridden bikes before. In a car you leave rubber on the road when you downshift without rev matching, so you figure it out pretty quickly without hurting yourself. It is hard for me to imagine getting on a bike with no prior clutch/shifting experience. Still, it doesn't seem that complicated. Of course once you are familiar with your bike it should be second nature. If I hopped on a new bike I would be careful while getting the feel of it.

I was just asked about this subject. My buddy bought my old DRZ SM and hasn't been riding long. He wanted to know when I down shift. I said it all depends. Depends on if I know I'm coming to a complete stop or if the light may change on my approach, or if I'm first in line? All depends. Also depends on if I'm approaching a corner or roundabout. Soon I'll take him out for some instructional rides. Be fun to get the KTM and DRZ on the same roads. The old Suzuki is a great bike to learn on. Can learn throttle blipping, sliding and give it all the beans without worries. It's the perfect adult beginner bike. I do miss the all the flat out antics on the 400. To engage "Loop Mode" just rev and hold it at redline while holding in the clutch, get into a full tuck with one foot still on the ground, make sure its in 1st gear, and immediately and fully release the clutch! To engage "Launch Control" and attain the yeetus maximus, hold the revs at something reasonable while holding the clutch in, make sure its in first gear, and balance the friction zone of your clutch with your throttle as you always do, and try not to burn your clutch out or loop it!

I’ve always been unsure as how to slow down if I’m doing it the right way. Is it brake-then clutch - then downshift in that order? Please advise! Thanks

So what speed would you want to be at when doing this? Let's say you're in 4th and going 45 and need to stop for a red light or stop sign ahead. Would you throttle off to like 35, then get into 3rd, then wait till you're at like 25 for 2nd and so on? In the video, you go basically 3rd straight to 2nd, so what speed are you at when you are in 4th when you start? Does it matter?
@RadioActiV_
@RadioActiV_ Месяц назад
This helps a lot, thanks. I do have another question: is it ever OK to just pull the clutch in and come to a stop without downshifting? Like if I'm in 4th coming up to a stop sign, does it damage the bike or something if I only pull the clutch and brakes?
@JacobGuiltyVibez
@JacobGuiltyVibez Месяц назад
Coasting to a stop with the clutch in shouldn't hurt anything I don't think, although I wouldn't think taking off in 4th again would go too well
@qvor1996
@qvor1996 Месяц назад
TL;DR It's a bad habit. Always stay in gear. If you cant rev match, just use clutch slip - clutch it, down a gear, slowly release the clutch. Great method if you are new or not confident enough to rev match. Gives you stopping power, you can do it while using the front brake (as no throttle input is needed) and you get the habit of being always in gear. In your case instead of pulling the clutch in 4th you can try this: while decelaring in 4th, clutch slip to 3rd, then to 2nd gear and pull in the clutch to come to a complete stop. Then find neutral and wait for the green light. Why is it good to be always in gear? Well if you think about it if the transmission and engine are not connected to the rear wheel, you basically riding a bycicle, you lose a huge amount of stability and control over the motorcycle. Stay safe

Been on two wheels exclusively for the last year and a half, and the thing that I still can't quite nail down is downshifting properly while also applying the front brake. Keeping constant pressure on the lever while also blipping the throttle has proven... difficult. I usually either end up stabbing the front brake if I actually try it, say screw it and downshift while using the rear brake, or say screw it even harder and downshift once I'm stopped if I'm slowing down hard enough that needing the front brake is more important at that moment than downshifting.

I imagine it's different for all bikes but, @yammie is there some rule of thumb regarding the best RPM to maintain? I know its not a simple answer of course. @@Burden82 good revmatching causes less wear on the engine Its a fact Also produces negative pressure in your pistons, also good.

As a beginner rider I cannot see doing it while braking with my front brake. Engine braking is all good but I'd rather use my front brake to deaccelerate faster in the city traffic and also warn the car behind me with that brake light. How can one blip the throttle while pulling the front brake leaver? 🤯I also try to close the throttle asap when braking and do it also when upshifting.

Wrap your thumb on the underside of the throttle and use a finger or two for the brake.

i noticed you blip throttle and downshift simultaneously, does this matter? should you blip change gear then clutch out or change gear blip then clutch out? or blip and downshift same time?
@JacobGuiltyVibez
@JacobGuiltyVibez Месяц назад
blip just before you shift, you're trying to raise the engine speed to the same speed as your transmission in order to make it a smoother switchover. Roll off your throttle to help decelerate a bit (bikes don't weigh much it actually helps a lot more than people think) Clutch in to disconnect Engine>Transmission Blip to increase engine speed Drop a gear and smoothly release clutch if it helps people understand it better the way i pictured it is the higher rpms are kind of a "safety net" to help catch your transmission speed and bring it down smoothly instead of just dumping it

Good stuff... Before i downshift i reduce throttle pull just a little...descelerating ...not flicking... holding throttle n shift .....

If you pull in the clutch without rolling off the throttle your rpms will rise enough to down shift

Yammie, what is wrong with coming up to a red light and just holding the clutch and the brakes and slowing the bike down with the brakes and going all the way down to first gear matching the speed of first gear using the brakes to slow down the bike as opposed to cycling through each gear one by one?

I donmt know how people find this so hard.. My first time riding a motorcycle with a clutch I did it the first time i slowd down, was really easy

can you downshift and skip a gear like i am going from 5 to 3 can I just stomp on the shifter two times or do I have to let the clutch out for each gear?
@coastlife999
@coastlife999 Месяц назад
He said it’s sequential. You have to do each one for purposes of rev matching. However, there’s nothing stopping you from skipping gears as you are asking. Just know that it isn’t optimal and you better be slow enough to avoid wheel locking up.

What do you do if you need to break fast mid turn? Like there’s an obstacle or slow moving vehicle around a blind bend?
@qvor1996
@qvor1996 Месяц назад
Keep calm, roll out the throttle, smoothly apply pressure to the front brake, try to bring the bike upright as much as possible, eyes up and forward, look for a way around the obstacle.

Do you blip “harder/more” depending on the speed you’re going to??
@kforeal6809
@kforeal6809 26 дней назад
Typically yes, but it all depends on what rpm you're at. If you're at 13k rpm and want to stay there, but drop a gear, you'll blip a little harder than you would if you were only shifting at, say 5k RPM.

riding a geared 50cc motorcycle you need to be good shifting it perfectly for a uphill or you will lose or your all your power. most the time you have to shift down to 4th gear to even get a up a hill 5th and 6th just aren't powerful enough
