Thank you sooo much! I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and now I understand a lot more of what is going on. I like @reid Davis suggestions to take a street car the first few time to get the hang of it in something safe! That takes away the excuse that my car isn’t ready! Question.... when you do take a a street car the first time what safety things do they look for? I see you wearing a helmet, suit, roll cage, etc. I imagine there is like levels to safety requirements.
@Burndown
@Burndown 3 года назад
In a street car as long as its a street legal car and you have working seat belts and your battery is in the stock location and your tires look good that seems to be about it to run for your first time. You may not need a helmet but I would take one anyway. You will need long pants and close toe shoes. As you go faster you'll need more safety gear to run your car. Making passes is addictive and running a street car means you can just get right back in line after you get your time slip too. I hope you give it a shot!

Welcome do drag racing. Your gonna be hooked for sure. Just get comfortable with the process of staging and make sure you know where the turn out is at the end of the track. You can go a moderate speed on your first run so you can get familiar with how much stopping distance you have and everything. Its nerve racking for your first few passes and once you get the hang of it your gonna love it.

Tomorrow I’m racing first time in 31 years, your video helped me remember. One question, with street tires is it best to go through the water and just “ clean off” the tires with a mild burnout? ( I estimate the car to be a 15 second at best car)
@Burndown
@Burndown 2 года назад
You dont have room to go around the water here at Irwindale so go through it and when its time to do your burn out just do a slight one to knock the water off the tire and out fo the grooves of the tread. You may need to play with the time you spend burning out to find the sweet spot. You dont want heat in a street radial tire unless its made for drag racing.
@jesscneal
@jesscneal 3 года назад
Thanks Dane. I think I want to go to my local track when my car is done in a year or two but since it's going to be a sloppy build sorta like yours it will be somewhat fast and I don't really want to put a cage in it since it's going to be a street car 99% of the time. So I either go and run part throttle 11.50+ passes or run a fast one and get the boot immediately. My local track is super strict about it apparently. Either way I'm going just so I can experience it. I've only been to the track once to spectate on a test n tune day.
@reiddavis2705
@reiddavis2705 3 года назад
Hey Jess, I'd recommend taking a daily driver to the track first just to get the routine down. Even though it won't be fast, I promise it'll still be fun, and it's a good way to cut your teeth in something safe and familiar. I took my truck a bunch before I built Rita, and I was glad to have gotten the hang of it before hurling a deathtrap down the track. If you're anything like me, you'll be pretty jittery first time at the light, so best to get that out of the way in something inconspicuous.
@jesscneal
@jesscneal 3 года назад
@@reiddavis2705 Thanks for that. Good idea. I've done a bunch of circle track racing and I got nervous every single time I went out :) I'm sure this will be no different.
@reiddavis2705
@reiddavis2705 3 года назад
@@jesscneal I'm always a little jittery first pass - I expect that'll never go away haha. With our sloppy builds there's usually a lot more to it than just hitting the gas. For me it's a whole bunch of safety stuff, make sure the laptop is logging, line lock, burnout through 3rd gear, shift back into first, pre-stage on the brake, bump in and go. Makes it a lot easier to do after knowing the rules and going through the process a few times. Watching seasoned racers really helps too, especially with the water box. Usually the track official will pull you through it, but once and a while you'll get a bozo that stops you in the water.
@Burndown
@Burndown 3 года назад
I agree with Reid on this one. Take a daily or a rental or something out first. Im sure your sloppy car will be quick but the Maliboom on 10#s with a gt45 wasnt quick enough to get kicked out so you never know. No one ever wants a cage till they go fast😆

So can you do a burn out with drag radials that you use as a daily driver or should the same rules apply to consider than street tires and not do a big burner like the Toyo proxies 888
@Burndown
@Burndown 3 года назад
Drag radials dont need a big burn out. Just heat them up a little and it gets them clean for the pass. If you do a big burn out you can make them greasy. Try different length burn outs to see what the tire likes best.
@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife
Thanks for the video! I am about to do my first drag race and I’m nervous! I am on street tires also. So if I can go around the water I should, right? If not, I shouldn’t do a big burnout, just a little spin? Thanks!
@Burndown
@Burndown Год назад
At Irwindale you can’t go around the water because it’s not wide enough. You’ll need to do a small burnout to clean the rear tires off and get the water out of the tread. Street tires don’t need the heat out in them so don’t go all John force with it and you’ll be good. Also if it spins let off the gas. Trying to get back in it or keep spinning down the track is a bad idea.
@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife
@@Burndown I was going to ask about that too. I’m in North Carolina so it’s a different track. Have you seen people spin heavy at high speeds when shifting? I don’t want to lose control down the track. Do III think letting off a little between shifts helps? Or does that offset the balance too much? It’s a corvette. Thanks!
@Burndown
@Burndown Год назад
@@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife just go around the water and give it gas on green. You’ll know if it spins too much then just let off till the tires grab and your good. You’ll need some decent horsepower to spin tires at the big end haha

Hey what about dial in time? How would you know how fast your car will run ? What would be a good starting number for dial in ?What happens if you run faster than what’s written on your car ? @jerrynova1
@jerrynova1 3 года назад
It’s called test and tune. You’ll need the run your car and to work the bugs out before you need to have a dial in number.
@Burndown
@Burndown 3 года назад
Thats why you test your car. It will hit in a range of close numbers if you are doing your job as a driver correctly. Then when its time to race it will be up to you to figure out where it will land when its time for you to make a pass. Im not an index or bracket racer at all but its pretty hard to hit a number constantly.
@Burndown
@Burndown 3 года назад
@@jerrynova1 Yes this. Lots of testing.
@roosduster
@roosduster 3 года назад
Dan dial-ins only come into play in a bracket race where you get time trials first to see what your vehicle will run they day and then in eliminations you need a dial-in. The dial-in is completely up to you, most people I know without data recorders and weather stations just pick a time close to what they ran in time trials. The more you race the better you will get at seeing what your vehicle does during different weather and different times of day. For starting out as others have said go to the local test and tune where you just get to make passes and there is no eliminations so no need to worry about a dial-in.
