Draining your pool is commonly done in Arizona about every three years. There are many reasons why you would want to drain your pool. Sometimes it is not always necessary to drain your pool, so if you have questions on when this is needed, please call Pool Rescuers or read out blog on when you should drain your pool.
What you need to drain your pool
You will need extra equipment to drain your pool. It is not recommended to drain your pool with your pools filtering equipment. You may cause damage if not properly done. In this video we used a submersible pump with an automatic shut off float. Two inch vacuum hose or two inch backwash hose, and an extension cord if needed.
Step one
Attach your two inch house to your submersible pump. There is many ways to do this. We have a fitting that will “press fit” into itself for quick and easy use. You can use hose clamps or even duct tape if needed.
Step two
Locate where you will discharge the water from the pool. In this video we located the sewer clean out located in front of the house. It is not recommended that you drain your pool into the street. If your property allows you to, you can drain into a section of your yard. Please call your city if you cannot locate a drain sewer and/or your yard will not hold large amounts of water. The city may allow for the water to be drained into the street with permit or special exceptions.
Step three
Make sure that the water supply is shut off if your pool is equipped with an automatic water leveler. Once this has been shut off, locate your pools electrical breaker or contractor switch and switch it off. When the pools draining you want to make sure that it is not refilling itself during the process or that your equipment turns on when there is no water it the system. This can cause major damage to your pools motor.
Step four
Lower the submersible pump into your pool. Make sure that you have not yet plugged in the pump. Once the pump is in the pool, use your pool poll to push the pump into the deepest part of your pools floor. This will allow the pump to drain the water to the pools lowest level. With your pump in place and the hose ran to the sewers clean out, you can then plug in your pump. When you plug the pump in, make sure that the water is coming out of the other end into the sewer. Check the backwash hose to make sure there are no leaks. If you locate a leak, you can tape it up using electrical tape.
Type of pump you use
Depending on what type of submersible pump you use, you may need to monitor it while the water lowers. If you use a pump with an automatic float, the pump will shut off when the water lowers past the pump. It is a good idea to bypass this float as there will be some water left over once the float shuts itself off.
Depending on how many gallons your pool holds, size of pump, and the size and length of backwash hose you use will determine how long it will take to discharge all the water out of your pool. Once all the water is out of the pool it is time to start filling. See our video on how to fill your pool.
